Now I'm wondering if they'll give some sort of explanation as to what went down in those 2 years. I can see reasons why they would and wouldn't but I'm not sure which I'd prefer. If they don't give an explanation, it leaves room for headcanon but at the same time, there would be no reason as to why everyone's hating on you and the inquisition. Then if they do give an explanation, it would provide setup for the DLC plot but they sacrifice the player's uh... like how they choose to operate the inquisition, decisions they've made etc. Does that make sense? Plus it would slash the potential for future DLC taking place within that timeframe.
Maybe they'll give some kind of broad statement, like maybe the operation's gotten too big and the Inquisitor can't control it anymore? So he/she actually isn't directly responsible for whatever happens to make Thedas hate them? I find myself kind of hoping for the whole thing to spin out of control but.... I like my happy endings, and I don't want to see anyone die/ leave on bad terms. >.>
I wouldn't worry about sad/bad endings for Inquisition, honestly. They're in fandom's good graces now, but in the larger picture BioWare is still treading glass wrt to their game endings after Mass Effect, and I'm really really skeptical that they want to repeat that mess.
To be honest I think that has actually hurt Inquisition more than helped it (the lack of serious consequences, the failure-proof storytelling, the stakes being null because you can't lose, no one leaves and no one dies and you always win, how every single ending you can possibly get is ultimately a positive one or vague enough to be turned around, how the worst thing that can happen to you in this game is being dumped by your boyfriend/girlfriend or dumping them yourself but otherwise there is just no way to lose, etc), but that's more or less the scenario we're still in - BioWare is being very deliberate and careful with keeping the Inquisition experience a positive one in everyone's minds, a "turnaround" point for them after two controversial releases, that sort of thing. I'm really doubting they'll want to risk that with an unavoidable miserable ending that sends everyone off their rockets again.
I'm interested too in how they're going to address these two years now, though, specially on the smaller scale level of your companions. Cole can afford to stay around indefinitely, he has nowhere else to go; Sera and Dorian and Bull can stay too, they don't have immediate commitments and may even find it more convenient to stay around the Inquisition and use their resources; Blackwall depends on whether you told him to Warden up or stick around. But people like Vivienne and Varric have things to do and places to be, they can't just tag along forever (Viv in my world state, for instance, becomes Grand Enchanter under Divine Cassandra, so they should both have left by now). I'm curious if we'll get at least a little line from each of them explaining why they're back/why they haven't left yet. Maybe in that part where Inky says "I need you - who's with me?"
