So while my heart slowly tries to recover from Solas, I've decided to shift my attention back to our Commander. 

 

Because Lavellan was the last character I played, when I tried to get my Trevellyan to marry her Commander, I somehow lost my "connection" to her? So I'm starting a another playthrough just for Cullen and I'm excited about that.

 

I don't know what this fandom has done to me. How can I be tender-hearted for one dude and excited to re-romance another lol.

I'm trying to sort my own personal head canon out and I don't know which idea I like more, that they find somewhere near to Cullen’s family in Ferelden or live in Kirkwall so my Lavellan can be near her clan again. Also as Cullen can marry a human noble inquisitor or a newly made noble inquisitor through Varric wouldn’t Cullen, and by extension his family, be nobility now?

I have wondered about that myself. I don't think he would be all happy about it, after all he was involved in that bad, bad event at the end of DA2, so he most probably doesn't have fond memories of that city. And he left the templars there to "play Inquisition", so I can imagine they wouldn't exactly welcome him there. (though they theoretically could, depending on whether it were his haters or admirers who had more word after he left - you can headcanon this too)

But if the Inquisitor insisted on moving there, he would follow her. He might rant about how will the mabari live in the city, but he would definitely follow her.

First, while he may become comte by marrying her, that would depend on Free Marches customs. Usually yes, it would make him noble. Simply marrying someone from a noble family without a title wouldn't make him noble, though (i.e. a human noble before Varric makes her a comtesse.) And none of this would directly apply to his family, it doesn't work that way (Orzammar's castes are a different type of system, so the example of a Brosca paragon's family doesn't apply.) In fact, assuming Thedas uses a generic western European system, one child of a landed noble generally inherits the title and land. Other children are considered noble (usually called by some fairly generic title like Lord or Lady,) but unless they marry a landed noble, their children will not be noble. That's why there can be someone whose great-great-grandparent was a Duke, but they aren't nobles themselves. Now, the status and family connections tend to stick with those children for several generations, including the connections to allow them to be quite well off as well as making them respectable enough to marry back into the lesser nobility. And Cullen's family could gain some status locally (or not, since the quizzy is a foreigner and Ferelden is like that, lol.)

 

I have no particular opinions about him returning to Kirkwall. But a non-romanced no-lyrium Cullen gets land in Ferelden to build something where he can work with Templars who want to quit lyrium or care for those too far gone. There's no real reason to believe that he isn't offered that when romanced as well if you want your romanced Cullen x IQ to stay in Ferelden.

I don't think Cullen would want to go back to Kirkwall, even if that's what the Inquisitor wants. The place is highly triggering to him, he doesn't even like talking about it when you ask him; imagine being forced to live in a place that brings you nothing but the worst of memories again.

 

Personally (just to share some ideas), I had a headcanon long before Trespasser that at some point my noble Trev would buy land and a estate near Ostwick to be near her family again, and that's where she and Cullen would eventually retire to. Now, after the ending we got

with Cullen getting land in Ferelden, I decided they will have a estate near Ostwick and one in the South Reach bannorn, so they can split family time - summer with the Trevelyans, winter with the Rutherfords, etc. That way they can also split their responsibilities; Cullen has his Templar repose sanctuaries to run in Ferelden, and IQ has both her Jenny business and her Trevelyan clan business to attend to in the Marches.

 

So translating that to a Dalish Inquisitor, maybe they split time with their loved ones too? Some time in Ferelden to be near his siblings and his responsibilities to the sanctuaries, some time in the Marches to be near her clan. (though probably not in Kirkwall, for Cullen's sake - maybe Starkhaven, if Sebastian was an ally to your Inquisition?)

 

As for the issue of nobility,

yes, marrying a noble (non-mage) Trevelyan makes Cullen a noble in Thedosian human lore, which is not based on official titles, but social standing. He wouldn't have a title unless Trev had one (comtess of Kirkwall counts, but who wants to be comtess of the literal hellmouth of Thedas ), but he does become the Lord Rutherford to Lady Trevelyan by marriage, at the very least. He'd probably hate it though, I can see him still rather preferring to be adressed as Ser than Lord (he is a knighted warrior, even if not a Templar anymore, so Ser Cullen still applies), or even Commander if Trev still has defense forces in her estate. (she should!)

 

Other headcanon possibilities for them getting titles could be if the Fereldan or Orlesian crown granted Trevelyan one for services rendered with the Inquisition, or Arl Bryland granted Trev or Cullen one when they petitioned for right to properties, or even the (more remote) possibility that Trev eventually rises to Bann in Ostwick herself. But even without a title, Cullen still becomes minor nobility in human society through his marriage to Trev.

 

His family (except for children with Trev) or name would not rise to nobility, though. Mia, Branson and Rosalie would still be commoners, unless a Trev with high enough a station (such as Bann) gave them titles too.

Jaws and Descent can be played any time, the only limitation is recommended level being 20+. And availability of some characters after the battle with Cory.

Trespasser needs finished main game and you won't be able to explore the old areas once you start it.

Tbh Jaws of Hakkon should be ok with a character level lower than 20 if played on casual or normal. And afaik Descent doesn't have lvl 20 requirement?

lol. You really haven't gotten a glimpse of a dwarven PT, have you? I have a very extensive collection of screenshots of just a few of the conversations that take place with a chair or table in the way and others in which you can only see my inquisitor's hairline (if you look REALLY hard) or you get a shot of the wall above her head. That doesn't get into the magical height adjustments, etc.

I wonder if it's even worse with a Dalish IQ? Hopefully there will be a mod to replace it soon because while I'm thrilled people who wanted one finally got a dress, I don't like it for my Dalish IQ who likes being Dalish and doesn't want to be shoe-horned into human culture.

you can make Dalish vows. You have a conversation where a Dalish elf states that making vows to the Maker would mean nothing to her, but that she knows Cullen is Andrastrian and all... But he says that he wants her "promise to be true" so she makes a vow to what appears to be Sylaise. A human female makes no vows. Meh, perhaps because I am mixed race, and grew up between cultures and continents, I enjoy being able to create romantic pairings where two distinct cultures are accepted as equal in value and respected. 

 

If it were possible, my romance of choice for Solas would be Adaar, but it wouldn't fit his character since he is an awful racist... though a female elf doesn't fit either really since he considers all present life on Thedas as inferior and Tranquil.

Come on! Cullen would visit Kirkwall at least once for Varric and his chest hair XD

 

But I am having a hard time imagining Cullen living in Kirkwall even with Inquisitor in tow. I mean DA2 did happen. To me, I don't think Cullen would want to raise his potential family in Kirkwall if given the chance because Kirkwall is one of those cities where criminal activities seem to outweigh the tourism business even with a respectable dwarf in charge. I can see the the couple use their holdings from time to time should they have business in the Free Marches (I expect the continued hunt for Solas will take them far and wide). Or use it to expand their business in helping people? Idk, they can use it to open a charity spot and help those in Lowtown. Herald of Andraste still has some influences left. I doubt Kirkwall will be used as a rehab spot for Templars though (too many bad vibes, tbh).

 

My Lavellan had her Clan wiped out ;_____; so at best I can see the couple living near Cullen's family and I doubt Mia will let go of Cullen easily this time, lol!

Not to make too big a fuss of it, but can we not put things re. Cullen in terms of "better with human/elf/mage/not mage" etc? There's enough of that attitude everywhere else, this thread is one of the last places where we can still cordially agree that romancing Cullen is great no matter what race/class/etc you wanna do it with.

I was perfectly happy with the wedding scene with my human Inquisitor, for instance, and didn't feel slighted at all by the Inky herself not repeating his Andrastian vows. It's implied she swore some manner of vows (not everyone will even play their humans as Andrastian, in any case), and the scene still plays out quite lovely.

Everyone got married (or not!), everyone got a happy ending. It doesn't have to be a competition for who gets the better content.

Okay, guys. I'm getting ready to start a new playthrough of Inquisition now that the last DLC is out. The DLCs are Jaws of Hakkon, The Descent, and Trespasser, right? I'm assuming that Trespasser should be played last, but should they all be played after the events of the main game?

Also, hair mods? It looked like some of the hair I liked on Nexus was pictured in other mods, but they weren't actually on Nexus. Please point me in the right direction. Thank you!

This reply is super late because I missed your PM but anyway, just to add a different opinion: I prefer to play both Hakkon and Descent post-game, after Corypheus is defeated. They have a different feeling than the region sidequests, to me they feel like problems the Inquisition would be called to resolve afterwards, in those two years between the main campaign and Trespasser, when they're sort of figuring out what the purpose of an Inquisition even is now that the world has been saved. Hakkon plays specially well between the game and Trespasser, what with the things you discover about the original Inquisition in it.

(& you've been pointed to hair mods already, so I'll PM you the list of gameplay/non-aesthetic mods I'm using when I'm home!)

<< I agree they fit perfectly filling the 2 year gap. It is quite a stretch that Quizzy would find a moment long enough to fit them before Coryfish battle. Especially that I always try to finish all of the base maps before ToM to keep the flow betterish.

Descent DLC has some ridiculous boss fights imo and not the fun kind. Unless you are aiming for achievements, I would just put it to casual to finish Descent. Also there's a new ability from Hakkon DLC that's helpful when you are playing Descent.

 

I couldn't even beat the final boss on casual with a level 23 Templar...thank goodness for CheatEngine because I was ready to just throw the controller against the wall and walk away.

I was a level 25/26? archer. After extensive online research I found a technique that allowed me to beat the boss, but this was after at least two hours of dying constantly and researching online to see what others had done. It was awful.

I couldn't even be bothered to move them when the reaper titan thing stomped. Ironically, the hardest fight for me was a stoopid arcane horror with all the dead rhinos around. 

 

Admittedly it was one annoying fight, when my party was pushed from the ledge. I've lost so many pots because of that.

The optional fights were much harder for me. Only Dorian got KO'd in the final fight, but I brought him instead of Iron Bull who normally gets KO'd anyway. Those optional fights though, especially the second one (?) was awful for me. I was massively struggling even with invincible, always barriered, always guarded Vivienne.

When I beat it the first time, Blackwall was my MVP and tanked the heck out of its attacks. He was my MVP with the alpha emissary fight, too (I was not prepared for that one and took me hours on my overheating PC ) While I enjoyed the small lore reveal from Descent DLC, the fights were not fun.
