Changing a surname is really problematic for a lot of professionals. And it's actually a hassle in many parts of the US to get it changed or to change it back afterwards. Locally, you take a risk of being barred from voting in an election if you haven't gotten every single piece of paper on file everywhere properly changed so they all exactly match (and you only have so much control over whether or not they actually make a change you request.) I've been relieved I never changed it so didn't have to deal with the hassles, but if I were doing it over again, yeah, I'd like the idea of taking each other's last name as a middle name. My middle name was the generic issue middle name for girls for about 5 years before and after I was born anyway, so it wouldn't break my heart to dispose of it, lol.

 

Oh yes, I know this from personal experience.  I decided to retake my maiden name without a divorce a few years ago because it sounded better for my new business.  Thankfully it wasn't too much of a big deal in the rural area I live in.

 

And yeah, my middle name is my abusive mother's first name.  Ditching it would be a mercy.

Sera takes the Inquisitor's surname, but mostly because she has no surname of her own to start with, I guess. She's just "Sera" until that point.

 

(It's really cute too, you find this because she fills a page of her journal with "Sera Trevelyan/Lavellan/Cadash/Adaar"s surrounded by little hearts. Cutie.)

 

I wonder what will happen when Sera realises that by taking Lavellan's surname, by extension, she just joined a Dalish clan of elfy-elves...

For Trevelyan surnames etc: From a war table letter: Lady Osher Lotharn Trevelyan Bayart of Ostwick.

 

I got the idea from that, they just tacked each extra name added to the family onto the end, including husband's. So she would have been born a Trevelyan in that case and married a Bayart, so keeping both names. Lotharn could have been mother's maiden name, or grand-father's (mother's side) surname. Ancestry and family trees has been a hobby for mine but I tried to work with what I'd already been given as a reference.

 

Also we have : Philliam Bernard Aloicious Trevelyan.

 

Would make my character Kyrrah Trevelyan Rutherford if going off those sole two references.

 

However with Trevelyan being the youngest child (from the codex for the human Inquisitor) or a mage possibly, plus player preferred stuff, it doesn't matter in the slightest in this regard. Just hadn't seen anyone bring up Trevelyan's current relatives that have a long string of names.

 

I did take a look at the known Trevelyans we meet through the war table missions for reference, and they seem to basically follow the hispanic/iberic convention of keeping both your family names and just tacking new ones at the end, as you say. Can't really be established that the clan name travels down only through one specific gender, fortunately, as that allows room for each player's personal preferences.

 

I already had a pre-release headcanon for why my Quizz doesn't carry her father's name, though (her Trevelyan comes from her mother, mom is "Bann Trevelyan" - Ari's father was a Templar and surrendered his surname to his vows long before he met mom), and I knew by that time the weight the clan name carried to Ari's personal identity, so in the end that didn't matter much to my decision, in any case - there was a precedent right one step up the family tree. The best she could do if she were to take Cullen's name would be renaming to "Rutherford-Trevelyan," with the clan still taking priority over the individual, but the other factors (like the sense of identity and the need for object permanence, after Trespasser) weighted more to her remaining just simply "Ariana Trevelyan" in the end.

 

(The noodlets will definitely carry both names, though, carrying the apparent clan convention forward; just haven't decided the order yet. Will they carry forward as Rutherfords or Trevelyans in the end, that is the question...)

When my mom got married she just tacked on my dad's last name at the end. When I was a kid I thought it was the coolest thing that she had 4 names. If I were going to have kids I'd probably do that, but in my advanced age I'll probably just keep my maiden name if I ever get married.

From her journal, she seems quite happy to be associated with a family. Despite how she presents herself, Sera is intelligent and I'm sure she thought about being associated with elfy people. But she did grow quite a bit and seems more emphatic now.

Heh, I have the exact opposite problem. Of all my playthroughs, I've only been able to romance one other person besides Cullen... Dorian. And that was only once.

lol I can romance others but there is an 'agreement'. I will flirt with Cullen all the way through. The only thing I wont do is get into a full blown romance with him but, not for lack of wanting to. My official LI's seem to be okay with that.

(Saying that, I tend to have a Cullen romance pt constantly going on alongside, just to get my full Cullen fix)

lol that's how I started out. I think I must have deleted a dozen characters because I would get to the first flirt with Cullen, hover over it forever before clicking on something else. Then I would resent doing it and start over lol. 

The first couple of times I successfully romanced Blackwall and Solas, I ran through them so quickly I hardly had time to enjoy them. lol

Can't leave poor Cullen lonely.  It doesn't change the fact I still feel so guilty when I am not romancing him in a pt, so  any other LI has to understand there is a 'connection' with Cullen and 'I' and they just have to accept that. hehe.

Eh, I just can't leave him alone. Even if I don't romance him, I just have to pair him with someone, be it unromanced Surana/Amell/Hawke or character I created in my head. Poor Cullen deserves some love

I'm big on those all-Wardens, four-Hawkes, all-Inquisitors headcanons, so whenever I import a male Hawke into the game there is always at least one fHawke left spare out there. I like to imagine different scenarios where she and Cullen could finally happen - maybe she comes to Skyhold with mHawke and she and Cullen reconnect and something builds up from there, maybe once the Inquisition is dissolved and Cullen is left with all this time to spare he and Hawke give it another shot now that Cullen's head is clearer and his heart is open to relationships and there's nothing standing between them... all sorts of things can happen in the background while my alternate Inquisitor of the week is macking on Sera or Blackwall and the camera is not on the Commander's private quarters.

Not gonna lie, at one point I had a massive fanfic planned where the Hawkes were quadruplets just so each of the four DA2 LIs could have a boyfriend/girlfriend. Needless to say it did not get written, like 99% of my fanfic ideas
