I usually went with "Sobaka" which is Russian for Dog ![]()
I did give a couple of them a less generic name, but I get a bit bored with picking names...
Oh my, I just had "Your Trainer" flashbacks ("I am Your Trainer!"). The mabari is "Your Dog" ("*ruff* *bark* Your Dog!").
I was planning to make KE, then Your Trainer started talking and I almost changed my plans
I love her.

Yep, it's from romance scene.

Nah, it's not bad. It really depeneds when you played DAO. I remember both DAO and DA2's names because I used the same every pt ![]()
It's Thyra for DAO and Kamau for DA2.

Yah, I replayed my DAO/DA2 canons several times over to get the details just right (back when having the perfect save game file to import into the next game mattered, loooool) and I always named my Warden's dog Mera and my Hawke's dog Boy, so those names got fixed in my memory and the dogs even developed little personalities of their own. Mera's a good diligent girl and she's dutifully watching over Alistair now like mama Cousland asked her before she died, while Boy's a giant goofball who's made it his mission to tackle the gallant Prince of Starkhaven to the floor and lick his face with terrible breath at least once a day, just to keep things interesting until mama Hawke comes back. ![]()
But with other characters I would often get bored or anxious about thinking up other names, so I'd go for zero effort and they'd all just be Barkspawn over and over in DAO, and Dog with every other Hawke. It's bad enough coming up with good names for my own characters, leave alone each one of their dogs!

Yeah okay the last time I played DAO was probably in 2012 or 2013. I only have two complete playthroughs, although I did start all the origins except human mage and the poor dwarf... not-noble dwarf... forget what it's called ![]()
I've played DA2 a million times but the dog seems like just a special ability instead of a companion.

I finished 11 PTs and probably started as many others which were deleted (or lost in a harddrive crash, lol.) But I played relatively recently, between summer 2013 and the launch of DAI. ![]()

I always want unique names for my PCs so I don't discover half a dozen fanfics with the same name (and disturbingly different personalities
) but I don't want to spend time on them. So they end up with names like "Tishina" - Silence in Russian (and not actually any connection to Morticia Adams
) and Ozera - Lake, lol. I don't really do "cannons," but I think I did actually name one of my Surana's mabaris Timur just because I wanted hers to have a particularly fierce name. Don't recall if she was the one I shipped with Cullen or not, tbh.

Dwarf... Commoner?
(weird name for this origin too, since the PC is actually casteless, which is even lower than just a commoner)
The dog in DA2 seemed like just an ability at first, until I discovered (like three playthroughs in, I'm dumb ok) that you can click on it and these adorable little scenes will play out with each of your companions. Gotta say, Sebastian's and Aveline's scenes with Dog are some of the favorite moments of these characters. Carver's is really sweet, too.

Brosca? Or Casteless, commoner? My second favorite origin story. ![]()

I played a lot while I was waiting for DAI, so I'm still pretty fresh on that ![]()
And what riverbanks said, you could name your Mabari and have those adorable cutscenes.

Oh, I really like Aveline's! Also "But if he's with us, who'd keep Gamlen's dept collectors away?"

I knoooow, I always google around first when I think I came up with a good name, because I don't want my precious unique snowflake PC to be confused with others... and I definitely don't want to be that one poor girl who came up with a cute name for her character and then got mobbed by people accusing her of "stealing" the name from one of those super famous OCs with 30 chapters-long fics and lots of fans behind them. (yes, that happened
was a super ordinary name like Kate or whatever, too)
It's funny that I first played all the origins in DAO with the default names because they seemed good enough, but then as I got more and more involved with reading and writing fics, it super bothered me to see everyone's Elissas and Kallians and Seredas were so different from mine, so that's when I decided to go back and give them unique names. It hadn't bothered me to use the default name for "my" character until I realized she wasn't "mine" at all.
Since then I never used the default anymore, I now find that giving the PC their own name helps me characterizing them as their own person right from the start.
I never use default names for my PCs, for various reasons. Mostly because I always considered naming my character first really important step in building their personality and history. It makes those PCs truly mine. Also... I just like naming them.
That's why I didn't like the idea someone posted in General Forum some time ago. About set name for next protag. Just nope ![]()
And of course I had to accidenally see this after dog naming talk
Definitely seen before, but relevant.

Of all the names I've used... Ren Tabris, Eirik Hawke, Nemanja Hawke (okay I had a crush on a footballer for that one), Anya Hawke, Kelly Hawke (male), Xander Hawke, Morag Hawke, okay-I'll-stop-with-the-Hawke's-now, Auren Lavellan, Aliss Cadash, Alin Lavellan... I don't think I've ever seen anyone else using those names, and they are not exactly rare names (okay there probably are not a lot of Nemanjas out there).
Now my canon Mahariel I did just leave Theron because I love the book Theron Ware and honestly it's just a pretty cool name.
Most of the DA2 fanfics I've read have left Hawke's name as default.
What will really throws me out of a fanfic sometimes is if a character doesn't have an origin-specific name... like Alexander Lavellan or something lol I wanna see an elfy name on a Lavellan, unless of course there's a backstory for why they have a non-Dalish name.

Oh no no no, that would be the worst. I already don't like the idea of "iconic" character appearances, I would hate a set name. But I doubt they'd even consider it at this point, when full characterization is such a hallmark of their games. (And specially with Fallout now raising the bar so high with a list of names recorded for audio recognition too. Keep up with the game, BW!
)

BTW CuriousArtemis, since you mentioned Morag, have you ever read the Tir Alainn series by Anne Bishop? One of the protags in named Morag, and very very cool.
No, but I am always looking for good fantasy recs! Thanks ![]()
Most of the DA2 fanfics I've read have left Hawke's name as default.
See, I don't like that, because Marian Hawke is such a non-entity to me. Like, who is this character? Steelbloom Hawke, Judith Hawke, Adelaide Hawke, I know who these Hawkes are and I can instantly get myself in that headspace for a new fic. Marian... unless I know the author and have read several fics in their universe to establish who their character is (like R2's), I'll struggle with not just picturing a blank space. Same with Trevelyan now. I know Audrey, Maerwynne, Rhiannon, Roxane Trevelyan... Evelyn? Evelyn can be so many different people's PC that I don't know how to begin telling them all apart. :3

Oh, this is so true. I don't need names to be taken from previously screened and Gaider-approved lists of canon-compliance or anything, but... try to keep them somewhat lore-friendly?
Stuff like... Sindaril Hawke, or Peggy Mahariel makes me squint. (disclaimer: these are not actual examples or anything, just came up with them on the spot)
All the talk about dog names made me smile. Funny thing is, my warden named her dog "dog" *g*.
I'm muuuch more picky when it comes to character names. Before DAI was released I came up with a whole list of names for possible future Inquisitors. And I'm sure I wasn't the only one who spent too much time at websites like behindthename.com
.

I used to play a lot of MMORPGs, and generally you have to have a unique name for your character, and I always got annoyed at having to try 8 or 10 before I'd get something (and then realized I hated that name.) Hence a lot of PCs with names that are simply Russian nouns or adjectives that I picked by flipping through the dictionary. ![]()
Poor kid
. People can be so weird about things like that. I'd be surprised to find someone using the same names I do, but I'd consider it a compliment, unless they were actually trying to represent the character as the ones I wrote (and I can't imagine why anyone would
.)

You should try naming a neopet. Neapsoigh109355-9u is probably already taken.
Anyway, I'm almost... almost to Trespasser, and I got a war table banter from Leliana and Cullen I've never heard before and I'm wondering if it's romance related.
L: Are you alright?
C:I'm just waiting, like everyone else.
There's more, but I can't remember right now.
I dooon't think that's romance specific b/c I feel like I've heard that. I think it's a "just before the big battle" type banter.
I like to imagine that Cullen's nephew is the one to name the dog and it ends up being something that the Dog would approve of, but Cullen does not.
Probably meaning that it'd be "Biscuit" or something?

It's funny. On PC names, I always name my characters in game so I can keep track of them, distinguish them, etc. But in fic, it's the opposite. It bugs me reading about PCs with random other names in fic. I'm not sure why. Maybe because I feel like all these characters exist in parallel universes anyway, so even if their name is the same, their personality can be different. That's why I always go with the default names when I write. Seems I'm weird that way.
But, Maker, coming up with unique MMORPG names is the worst. I'm sitting there twitching, wanting to play SO BADLY, but can't because I still haven't come up with a name the server will accept.

SWtOR's expansion, lol? Or just MMORPGs generally?
I have no problem with the default names in fics (well, except that I don't actually like a lot of them that much,) but giving them unique names, for me, makes it feel like I can write several stories about a Lavellan x Cullen, for instance, without anyone confusing one with another. I know I've seen a story a couple of times by a fanfic writer I recognized and assumed it was a continuation of something else they wrote with the default name, then being confused until I figured out it was supposed to be a completely different one. Sometimes it's obvious immediately, but other times it's like putting on a shoe that doesn't fit quite right until you realize you grabbed your daughter's shoe ![]()
