R2, trying to retrace it in the time I have, lol. Here are posts where other people mention it:

http://forum.bioware...8#entry18925556

http://forum.bioware...2#entry18143348

I went back to December 19, 2014, and Lolalei had posted a video that is no longer available:

http://forum.bioware...2#entry18143389

Which seemed to have been something about a dev who's no longer with BW who discussed the time reason for the gender gating, but the one I saw was a man who was still with BW and in fact it was sometime past mid-January because I've found posts by me through then when I didn't yet know about the interview I remember.

Alot of people had no issues with the race gating.

This confession got almost 400 replies and no negative responses.

I know it sucks for alot of people but they are likely never going to go back to the way DA2 was.

And besides the writers have the right to their vision while people can mod to their hearts content.

Personally, I have too much respect to the developers and writers to demand things from them.

Well... the fact is, everyone originally got two. They honestly thought they were giving us some great options. Just think, originally, all female characters, regardless of race, had only Bull or Blackwall as a male romance option. Same with my situation... male characters had Bull and Dorian as a male romance option. When they had an extra year, it's not surprising that they chose to focus on straight female and human/elf for the new additions. When asked why Solas was straight instead of gay (if time and money forced it to be an either/or situation) one of the devs (I believe it was actually Laidlaw) said it would have been crazy to have two gay love interests. So, there you have it. My guys never even had a chance lol

But it's all subjective. There are people who adore Bull, Dorian, and/or Blackwall. It just sucks for Cullenites like you and me; we just didn't get what we really wanted, while all our friends did. It don't think it would have been so bad if nobody had gotten Cullen, but it makes one quite salty to have to watch from the sidelines while everyone else gets their templar kick

That's why I always say... if you like what you got, you're in favor of race- and gender-gating. If you didn't, you aren't. Because humans are selfish creatures lol

Actually, no. Apparently, they hadn't even planned on IB for the female dwarves and squeezed that in at the last minute. Why, I dunno. I'm being polite and not speculating on old debates on someone disliking female dwarves and sabotaging the chances of people playing them (nor will I speculate on the fact that the newest race already had a same-race LI and is also Sera's favored race instead of one of those she insults...) But I agree, the people who are happy with gating are the ones who got advantaged and know that they will continue to be. Once a game starts doing that, the majority of the resources will ALWAYS go to the most popular races, etc. If you're cheering it on, you know that you will continue to get the lion's share of the effort.

I'm actually really surprised that people are suddenly contesting that his race-gating was for time and resource reasons, not story reasons now, almost a year after we were told differently and people accepting it and even quoting it constantly. Time and resource reasons should shut down all potentially negative discussions about Cullen as racist. Errr, do people suddenly want the drama of those sorts of vitriolic discussions again?

Melca, I never go to those, and many other people don't, and even if I did, I wouldn't start a discussion like that there (and many of those threads started huge negative discussions elsewhere.) There were LOTS of negative reactions on BSN about it. Racegating in particular is a major problem, but I don't want to see this turn acrimonious. But keep in mind that with DAO and DA2, it was possible to do an enormous amount with modding, even entirely new scenes if they weren't voiced. The new engine has limited them FAR more. Yes, I'm going to play with a mod that ungates Cullen to my dwarf. But it does not adjust for height or anything else; it basically just unblocks the check points that prevents a romance from going forward with a dwarf which means I'm going to have to ignore a lot to play it. And it's unlikely to ever be anything else since they are releasing so little about it. My daughter and her wife were showing me Skyrim mods last night that made me want to cry because the engine they're using for DA now pretty much rules out anything except a bit of cosmetic modding.

I'm not demanding things from them. I'm pointing out how unevenly done what they gave us was, and if no one speaks up with criticisms, they're going to assume everyone's fine with what happened and continue giving players of certain races, etc. extremely well-done fleshed out content and treating others as afterthoughts with shoddy animations then pompously say, well, no one likes to play them. Duh. Maybe if they'd taken the time to give female dwarves at least ONE male LI that was well-done and generally appealing, I'd be less ticked off. Or even if they'd kept the game in an engine that wasn't so difficult to mod. But they didn't.

It's not really even about race for me. I just like playing characters at the bottom of society who make good. And having Cullen (who would be my unequivocal choice if I were self-inserting) is icing on the cake. Fortunately, I a) can sort of make Lavellan work for me and b ) don't mind playing an orientation different from mine for the Inquisitor who's "mine." But these are compromises and mean I don't have a single canon Inquisitor, but 4-5.

Yeah sadly because of gating I can't have a canon inquisitor and don't really care for the game all that much. If that's the way they want to go they'll have to get used to disappointing fans because someone's always going to be on the other end of the gate.

Anyway how is it that I'm away for so long and as soon as I return were on my least favorite topic, the one thing that gave me the most pain in this fandom and this game lol MOVING ON!!!

BSN only reflects a small percentage of the audience.  I think people forget that and as for Confession blogs. I see nothing wrong with them. I see alot of confessions there of people who were harassed this time around because they didn't play elves. How right is that?  Dragon Age Confessions also posts alot of positive things like how the characters inspired them to come out to their families and such. ITS NOT ALL NEGATIVE.

The great thing about Confessions blogs is they provide hard truths that people do not want to hear. The problems with this fandom is people want to hide in their bubble and have things their way. They forget the diversity this fandom has, They forget the costs that goes into making these games

I definitely agree there should be options...but bullying the writers is not the way to go about it. I am not saying you are bullying but many is this fandom suffer from an overblown sense of entitlement.

There's criticism and there's bullying.  What I see alot of people do in this fandom is horrible. How they treat the writers and developers is horrible. It makes me very uncomfortable to see adults act this way.

We can't get everything we want in this world. Its just the way it is.

The characters in Inquisition have preferences. It does not make them racist.   If the writers were going to write a character as racist, the character would have stated it.

I've already come to expect the next game will be different from the previous three. BioWare never does it the same way.

So yes, criticism is great but people should NEVER assume they are speaking for the entire audience.

Oh and I forgot how much human protagonists are hated on this board so I will go back to lurk mode.

Hi all! I do lots of lurking on here only posting occasionally, but as I had a thought I decided to post it to maybe get a new conversation going!

I remember ages ago someone posted that GE (sorry forgot his now new real name) was back in the recording booth for Bioware. Was this for the DLC or do you think he is voicing a character in ME:A?

If is was for ME:A what type of character and/or species would you like him to voice? Sorry if a bit off topic but was curious!

I don't recall anything about this, other than the brief amount of VA work he did for Trespasser back in the summer, I think?

I don't think we know any voice actors cast for ME:A yet although it wouldn't be surprising if he showed up... DA voices do sometimes show up in ME (hello Fenris as that random police chief haha)...

Speaking of turians, it would be interesting to hear his voice synthed into a turian's. If I knew he could do a different accent, I'd like to hear him as a quarian, too, but that might just be my love for quarians ♥

edited to add : I didn't really play ME, so I don't really have an opinion on how his voice would fit best that universe. except perhaps...

The One who got to play an Imperial Agent in Star Wars The Old republic only because it had female Hawke voice lol. And evry time i was choosing snarky replies with my IA I was imagining Hawke lol

She's in ME, too, ME3 to be exact, as Dr. Brynn Cole, universally and understandably hated by all Jacob-mancers

Then you have Fenris as a turian, who is also every imperial soldier EVER in Skyrim... Zevran as J'Zargo and Mercurio in Skyrim as well (I want to say Zevran is quite a few khajiit but not sure).

Yeah, I think the person who made it was likely referring to DA2, or maybe both, or who knows. I frankly think he was smokin' in DA2, and I'm pretty fond of Original Recipe as well. ^_^ But the hipster-ness of it tickles me nonetheless.

Spoiler

The "again" surprised me. Apparently there must have been a visit one way or another between the main story and this...
