Based on Alistair and Cullen both entering Templar training in their mid-teens and never having much in the way of dating experience as a result, I'd hazard a guess that being slightly sexually repressed tends tends to come standard with the uniform.

True, I can definitely see that being the norm, but not everyone has a natural burning desire for physical intimacy.

But even setting that aside, we have Aveline married to a templar, and we know templars visit brothels routinely (and maybe can have boyfriends/girlfriends??). So I always chalked Alistair's inexperience up to age, not his (brief) templar background, and Cullen may simply be a shy man (then again I believe his writer confirmed that, erm, it is NOT confirmed whether he is or isn't a virgin?? I think she said something like "Whatever you prefer believing").

And after all that I must confess that the only Cullen I've ever written is the sexually repressed Cullen

Very true, adjusting to Templar life probably comes a lot easier for asexual individuals or those without an overactive libido.

I always see Cullen as being shy and slightly socially awkward. That's why he tends to come across as a loner and so often looks uneasy in situations that lie outside his comfort zone or require him to interact in a non-work environment.

Cullen seems to relax more around smaller groups of people he's familiar with (such as playing chess with Dorian and Wicked Grace in the tavern), but often appears far more uneasy when dealing with people he doesn't know (such as Winter Palace and Exalted Council). Could be part of why Cullen often appears to be a workaholic, that he uses his work as an excuse to be busy to avoid situations he's not comfortable in?

Of course, that's just my read of him... but since I'm socially awkward myself, I might just be projecting slightly?

But Cullen being deeply shy definitely is a good explanation for why he ran at Amell/Surana propositioning him, since we know that he was very much willing and had an long-running infatuation with her.

I'd hazard a guess that being slightly sexually repressed tends tends to come standard with the uniform. That and learning to become emotionally distant from their mage charges is part of their job, so they won't let their feelings get in the way of acting if they have to.

Probably is the reason why most Templars come across as cold, aloof and serious, Cullen suggests they are purposefully trained to be that way.

Templars visiting brothels goes along well with the idea that they are trained from the get-go to be emotionally distant. No tangled feelings when they spend free time there because it's a business transaction. I wouldn't be surprised if the Order encouraged them to make use of the bawdy house rather than find a meaningful relationship.

On the other hand, chatter in DA2 makes it sound like Meredith discourages the Rose serving the templars. So hard to say.

To be honest, I think the sexual repression or lack thereof in the DA universe's templars is a bit uneven. In DA:O, they tried to hammer home the "Conceal, Don't Feel" approach for templars, and then BOOM templars are getting married in DA2 "under certain circumstances," and yet brothels are verboten, and yet some templars are always there. Then, like so much templar lore, they add in an awkward ask with Cullen in DA:I to attempt to put it to rest: Nope, no sex vows here.

I wish they'd just made it a bit more streamlined what their angle was on sex/relationships for templars. I can understand a Warriors of God are dedicated to their cause kind of thing, but then the writers simultaneously made it some shameful repression handed down to the templars by the higher ups/Chantry. Their approach to sex (and gender roles for that matter) has always been uneven, probably because the writers' modern day sensibilities end up inadvertently influencing their world building.

I'm not so certain in regards to Cullen in this matter (he just seemed easily flustered/shy in DAO) but with Alistair he makes it clear that it's his Chantry background rather than his Templar background that is responsible for his virginity. He was raised to be a "gentleman" and didn't want to just do it with whomever, whenever. Or get fried by a lightening bolt via the Maker lol.

So I think with those 2 it's more about their personality than it is about it being a Templar thing in particular.

Sorry to burst in here on you nice people but I find myself needing to ask what the heck kind of black sorcery you have going on? I was someone who was pretty indifferent to Cullen for DAO and DA2 and even in my couple runs of DAI heck even when I check out his romance it was mostly cute but eh. Then I play Trespasser see he gets a dog and go 'well damn now I have to try it again' (though this was also because of a spoiler youtube recommend me as well) Now I'm playing the game again and I'm enjoying it far more than I remember the last time I even had a little giggle and I don't giggle! I laugh like a mule or pig but I don't giggle! Now I know you all are lovely sweet folks but I demand to know what kind of blood magic you're using in here for this to happen.

Ahh that's because you fell in love with him in Trespasser, now you are seeing things through a different lens.

I shall use a song quote to illustrate:

"And at last I see the light

And it's like the fog has lifted
And at last I see the light
And it's like the sky is new
And it's warm and real and bright
And the world has somehow shifted
All at once everything looks different
Now that I see you"

Same thing happened to me. Now, after every cutscene with Cullen I need to punch a wall to feel manly again.

I find myself yelling at the screen after them. It's a good thing he's a fictional character or I'd feel like an ass for it.

Hahaha you guys are adorable~

In my honest opinion the most manly thing you can do is to not worry about being manly. By that I mean, embrace the Cullen love xD

Ps. That is just my general opinion about masculinity not just in respect to Cullen or any Bioware romance, the most manly thing you can do is not worry about being manly.

Bwahahahaha!

I'm also a round-about Cullen fan. I was fascinated with the character and his changes over time, but was pretty meh on him as a potential romance... Actually, I think the late converts need a club :P

triaelf9 does some lovely retelling of the story with her comics of her Celyse and Cullen, and yeah, Celyse as an unrepentantly strong badass is one of the reasons I love following them.

In all serious though I'd probably do that regardless of who it was Cullen just gets more of it cause of being so indifferent towards him before

So, I must say... I'm utterly baffled by how being manly has anything to do with liking Cullen.  I must be missing something obvious.

...and you are a man? I'm sorry if I'm being dense. I know lots of men and woman who like Cullen as a character. Is it not manly to do so? There are some harmful stereotypes out there about any Cullen fan being a ravening fangirl, so it's something we're generally careful of.

Thank you. Though I'm still trying to figure out what's so unmanly about being enthusiastic about a character either? (or why enthusiasm is gendered at all, :P )

I assume it's rather than being a casual fan of Cullen's they've got a bit of a swooning crush on him that they aren't accustomed to?

Please enjoy this bra burning gif as my way of saying I agree with Tishina's point that enthusiasm needs not be engendered but that I'm not so offended that I can't laugh about the stereotypical "unmanly" comment.  ;)
