I also do have a rather long ignore list, so if and when people do come into the thread and start saying stupid things, baiting people, sniping back and forth, I just don't see and thus don't respond to it. I recommend browsing the forum in the same way; it's so much more pleasant

The only thing that really annoyed me with his attractiveness was that the devs would not stop making little digs regarding it, as if the Cullenites did nothing but squee. I thought the character himself was quite strong.

No. It kept going on in halamshiral and it lasted a few minutes as a result. There are random folks that talk about Cullen too. It never happened with any other character as far as I am concerned.

That's your assumptions. I like Cullen as a character, and not for his looks or romance since I'm a straight male. And I don't think his character was badly portayed.

People have posted their negative opinions on Cullen, even for his actions and optinion in DA2, without problems. I don't think this thread has problems with discussing different, and possible criticism of the character.

Again, outside of the fawning admirers at the Winter Palace and the one follow-up banter at the War Table where Josie mentions the inquiries about Cullen's relationship status, I recall no gushing about his desirability.

And the fawning of the Orlesians is clearly meant as a joke, since they're Orlesian nobles and therefore ridiculous fops. Everything they do is silly.

Yes, Orlesians are ridiculous, and ? It is still implied that Cullen is popular, even if it is meant as a joke. 

 

If that's the way you dismiss any comment made, It's not surprising that you don't recall much in the game.

I don't think Artemis was talking about you, and if you'd have noticed Artemis did criticize Cullen's characterization in DAI in the last page, so I don't get what you're saying. I mean, look at the part of the post before the one you were talking to:

Artemis wasn't replying to you with that but to another's post that could be construed as thread policing. She in fact has her own criticisms about Cullen being presented as a "Ken doll" so you've got her wrong on that front.

Cullen as a character has been widely discussed in here and we all wanted to see the amazing story arc he could have had. Some were happy with what he did get and some weren't and feel his looks were too much in the fore of his presence. You aren't as alone in that opinion as you like to make it seem.

In fact you seem more bent on presenting this "one man alone!" vibe by digging with "it's a fan thread so I don't expect much" when many might agree with your point to varying degrees. As if we don't appreciate Cullen as a person and how dare anyone claim the fan service as too much?! When that is precisely some of the issue many of us have. You have some disagreement on whether Cullen was presented as fan service (which is a matter of perspective) and you think you're the only one who maybe didn't like how much Cullen's looks were the butt of the joke? Come on.

I can certainly see some validity in your original point about Cullen but your attitude and "it's a fan thread" comments are bordering on fan bashing and that's not cool. We can all discuss whether Cullen's story was adequately served without devolving into a flame war.

When Cullen's DA:I model was first shown I saw a lot 'OMG he's hot' and I'd do him' sort of comments and I did wonder just how many were converted just on his looks. It didn't bother me because I liked him when he wasn't cool and I had waited too long to get my virtual hands on him I wasn't going to be put off. But I do think they prettied him up, but they do that with most if not all LI's.  I think it was David Gaider who said they have to make it so people want to kiss them.

 

As for the randy bunch at Halamshiral, I always saw that as a Jovial mock to us rather than a statement on his looks.

Though Leliana's, 'Hush, just look pretty', remark did irk me.

I don't expect much from a fan thread is more about what i experienced in the past in various threads, my personal opinion than an insult thrown in my mind. Everytime that I say some critics even if I like the character I am talking about, as a non-fan, there are always some people who are agressive, sarcastic, and not really tolerant. I like constructive dicussions, even if People disagree with me, and I despise this need on internet for people to use freely irony, passive-agressive tone. I might be cynical after all that. 

 

I'd like to point that someone who is perceived as a cullenite, solas fan, etc and who used to talk a lot with other of the same fans in the same thread or any fan of any another character is more likely to be more well received in its critics than someone foreigner who just came into a thread to say something bad at one point and immediately people scream ' troll ' or they are on the defensive using a sarcastic tone. It's often not exactly the same treatment and It certainly happened a lot, and not even with me, I have eyes to watch silently. So, it certainly true in part for me. 

 

The post of Artemis appearing after what we are arguing certainly simply made me think of all those same posts who magically appeared after mine in other fan threads in the past. " ignore the troll blah blah blah ". It might have made me turn into a less lenient mood and darkened my thoughts after seeing it, i admit. 

 

That's where come from my attitude. If she doesn't talk about me, cool, though, I'm not really fond of that kind of post, because it was used against people who made reasonable posts and who certainly didn't deserve that kind of quick judgment. But whatever.

 

Now, the last thing I wanted, was a flame war as well. I merely gave an opinion.and didn't expect to post more than once over it to be honest. lol.

I took Leliana's comment as just her. It was nice to see more of the familiar Leli from DAO. It did bring me up short but I let it go. And I preferred Cullen's DA2 face. Granted he looks more weathered and real in DAI but his face and features seemed differently shaped than in DA2 - square jaw, straight strong nose, wide forehead... In DAI he looks more rounded in all those areas. The jaw is still strong but slanted, the nose a bit more bulbous and his hairline slopes some. He just... looks different to me.

It's amazing how these things can snowball. lol! We all have our opinions and our thread has always tried to keep it respectful of all types around here. Anyone who pulls a "It's a Cullen thread, why are you here?" type of comment gets strongly reminded this is a discussion thread - not an appreciation thread. Though we do that also. lol! In general, the line is drawn at commenting on the fans. Someone disagreed with your opinion. You'll find all types here. I just find it ironic that Artemis's comment to someone else got your attention when she was offering her own criticisms not much different than yours just a couple pages back. When it comes to message boards, due diligence is your friend. =)

 

I myself haven't been as satisfied with Cullen's story as I would have liked to be. Until I romance him, I dunno if the romance content is different but I wanted more out of the possibilities he had. I didn't mind some of the dialogue about Cullen's looks but it wore a little bit thin at times. I suppose it stands out more if one wanted to see more from Cullen's story than there was or hadn't romanced him for the additional content. *shrug*

Yeah, I agree. It kind of irks me that Cullen and Leliana look so different from previous game counterparts. There's remaking characters from scratch with a different game engine, and then there's just changing their facial structure and hair/eye color. 

 

Cullen's DAI appearance especially lifts my eyebrow now that I've seen some early concept sketches, where DAI Cullen looked rather similar to his DA2 appearance. Why'd they change it??!! D:

Heck, a deviantart artist used some early DAI concept art and gave us a 3D Commander Cullen who looks similar to DA2 Cullen. How'd she get it right, but the devs themselves didn't?

(Sorry, it's just a pet peeve of mine. I'm very much a stickler for "follow your own lore! Stay faithful to your own designs!" I love the DA series to bits, but the constant redesigns between games is starting to get to me.  )

All I will say is that there are certain people that are on my ignore list and have been for years. And then somehow it magically turns out to be those individuals who repeatedly come here and make the most trouble... darn you people who quote such individuals and force me to see their nonsense anyway  

 

(tl;dr: some people are repeat offenders and particularly excel at offending themselves - to avoid dealing with such nonsense, the ignore feature is your friend. Keeps the thread happy and clean and engaged in vigorous discussion.)
