Holy cow, guys! I'm out of it for one day and...

Anyhoo, to reiterate, this IS a discussion thread and not a fan thread, explicitly by design. As it has been in all its previous iterations as well. A review of the past several pages will reveal, in fact, many of the same arguments being made about how dai!Cullen is a departure from da2!Cullen. Lengthy arguments that have been repeated many many times since DA:I came out. By fans. There are also differing points of view on this, which results in ... you guessed it! Discussion!! So let's please keep it civil.

Cullen's DAI appearance especially lifts my eyebrow now that I've seen some early concept sketches, where DAI Cullen looked rather similar to his DA2 appearance. Why'd they change it??!! D:
Spoiler
Heck, a deviantart artist used some early DAI concept art and gave us a 3D Commander Cullen who looks similar to DA2 Cullen. How'd she get it right, but the devs themselves didn't?
Spoiler
(Sorry, it's just a pet peeve of mine. I'm very much a stickler for "follow your own lore! Stay faithful to your own designs!" I love the DA series to bits, but the constant redesigns between games is starting to get to me.
)
Something to keep in mind here is that in DA2, essentially Cullen had no distinctive look. His DA2 head morph was based on a directive to the artist of "make him clean cut." That's it. So the artists in DA:I had little to go on and decided to make him more unique in DA:I. Moreover, it was a whole new engine that created its own unique challenges. Their first attempts were discarded as him looking too haggard and old, which is probably part of why he's far more babyfaced in the final version, for example.
Adela's work was on a different platform yet again. And she rocked it. But notably, it was also based on the new direction for DA:I from the War Table concept.
That all being said... I'd say his transformation between engines was a heckuva lot more successful than Alistair's DA:O to DA2 transform, or Zevran's. ![]()

The only thing that really annoyed me with his attractiveness was that the devs would not stop making little digs regarding it, as if the Cullenites did nothing but squee. I thought the character himself was quite strong.
Ugh, this bothered me as well. The squeeing dev, the shirtless cullen at the VGAs, the shirtless horse thing, teasing him about how he styles his hair, telling him to be quiet and stay pretty, him complaining explicitly about how predatory everyone is. Taken together, it's there. Whether it's pandering to what they thought the fans wanted or making fun of the fans... hard to say.
I think Solas needs to watch out now!

At least Cassandra treats him with due respect as the Inquisition's military commander, never making those kind of comments about him. Besides her being a Seeker and thus understanding what he'd be going through, I think that the other reason Cullen confided in her about his intention to cease taking Lyrium was because he considers her more of a friend than Leliana or Josephine.
You do get the sense that Cullen and Cassandra share a mutual respect and trust and are often on the same wavelength, even if they happen to disagree on a particular issue. Probably because both of them are career military, so they have a lot in common and love rules, as Bull comments on. Aveline is very similar in this regard too, so that's probably why Cullen ended up befriending her at some point during the gap between DA2 and DAI.
Agree. This is something I really liked. And, why I just adore everking's series of Cullen/Cassandra BROTP fanart.

Love the relationship Cassandra had with Cullen. Wish there had been more opportunities to explore that. Hell, I just love Cassandra's relationships with everyone. I just love Cassandra lol.

When Cullen's DA:I model was first shown I saw a lot 'OMG he's hot' and I'd do him' sort of comments and I did wonder just how many were converted just on his looks. It didn't bother me because I liked him when he wasn't cool and I had waited too long to get my virtual hands on him I wasn't going to be put off. But I do think they prettied him up, but they do that with most if not all LI's. I think it was David Gaider who said they have to make it so people want to kiss them.
As for the randy bunch at Halamshiral, I always saw that as a Jovial mock to us rather than a statement on his looks.
Though Leliana's, 'Hush, just look pretty', remark did irk me.
...I did get my first look into him first because of that look. Yea I'm that kind of girl XD
Hey! Good to see you! Want to discuss something cheerful and non-controversial?
...On the less controversial subject, now I ship OC pairings bigger than canon characters.
Not so funny story probably but I created a character for a personal project (original project, that Firefly story I told you & arty) and there's a side character I'm having a bit of problem with. So someone suggest to just RP it and this character (ended up getting named Lang just because he is tall) ends up in different RP in different age.
The thing is, while I write the Hogwarts AU (11 years old?) I look at people around me and I end up meeting a child that looks like him that I come across around here (8-11?) and there is also a music clip about a kid that age with a story with the same feeling of his backstory. So since the Hogwart AU ends up being the best characterization I get from him, he ends up being a really young boy in my head... Like the one from the music clip probably with darker hair.
The problem comes when in the other AU the adult version of his get a... pairing and... the girl who RP it wants some smut (and me too at some point the relationship is just really nicely built). But I can't do it at all because I keep seeing the image of that boy in my head and it's just NOPE. ![]()
So yeah, any news with Cullen to make me stop feeling so... dirty? Did you guys see the news about Greg Ellis missing??? Was he found?? Any news??? Is he OK?

I honestly want it to be revealed who okayed Zevran's DA2 look so that person can be called out and FIRED. You think I'm joking?! Serious as a heart attack. Also i'm still waiting from an apology from the devs for NEVER fixing the bug that keeps Zevran from acknowledging his romance with the Warden.
But yeah I love Cullen's DAI look very, very much. I just think he looks really great - they did an excellent job. I wish he had looked more like his 40-something War Table look because I'm a weirdo, but I think he came out looking like a real person. Personally I think he looks a little closer to 35 than 30, but that's okay, only works to my advantage lol

It honestly was a great discussion until one particular individual jumped in. As I always say, IGNORE those individuals instead of quoting, sniping, acting shocked, even responding to their ridiculousness. Then we can continue our awesome discussions without having to toss out warnings left and right, warnings that never apply to folks who actually hang out here - or even don't hang out, but just wanna pop in and engage in discussion about our boy. The warnings are only ever given to those who come here to disrupt the conversation, and those are the last people who could give a sh!t about a warning. They are literally here just to stir things up. ![]()

Greg, a.k.a. Jonny was found and is well and seems to deny that he was ever missing? He specifically denies the claims about his mental health. So it seems there's some confusion about it all. I'm just glad he's safe.
Ah, at least he is safe. But how many people with health problem denies about their own condition? I guess for many, it's even a self denial. So well...

Amen to older Cullen. I am so here for that!

It honestly was a great discussion
I agree. It was quite fun to look back and discuss, perhaps with a bit more clarity (since it's been a while) Cullen's development as a character, and overall how DAI's companion characterization worked in some areas and was really lacking in others.

lol Well, an RP is an RP... one things people seem to forget is that kids can start being interested in sex at a very young age; it's normal for, say, a 15 year old to start experimenting. It isn't KOSHER and you can't try to publish anything like that without being arrested (unless you're the author of Clan of the Cave Bear... for some reason I wanna say Ayla was underage) but personally I love writing teens and young folks and yeah sexuality can and often is a part of their lives, so... now 11 years old is a bit young, so I hear you ![]()
I'm struggling with the ages of my characters in the story I'm working on (the one I sent you a summary for). Like you I think I naturally gravitate towards writing younger characters, but then that becomes a problem when I try to include romance. My main character went from 19 to 17, but then I realized he may "get busy" with his spouse at some point, so I forced myself to make him turn 18 during the course of the novel. But then I started to feel concerned about the age discrepancy between him and his future husband, so I dropped future husband's age from 25 to 23. And after a point it's like you sit back and ask yourself, Who even ARE these characters anymore??

Oh and to my last post I meant to add a picture of Fenris that someone created in DAI (obviously using mods, but still):

http://bemyamatus.tu...-look-so-grumpy
Which makes me think FB3 is just really really amazing and capable of creating gorgeous people, BioWare's inability to create hair notwithstanding.

Frostbite is a really good engine, and overall the CC of DAI is good...if hairs and beards are out of the picture >_>.
I hope Bioware manage to fix whatever problem they had in rendering hairs, because the contrast between them and the rest of the face, or body is really irritating.

It was a pain in the butt doing my CC, cause my men always have beards, but it was like pulling teeth trying to find a good one.
I get that they're kind of pioneering this engine, but GOD DAMN, it was frustrating lol.

Hello, my dear. It has been far too long....
I don't know why but I thought you didn't like Fenris for some reason?! Yeah he looks lovely there and should've been at Hawke's side in DAI... ![]()

I have to use a mod to fix Blackwall's sad/weird beard. Along with his Warden-esque complexion which makes no sense since he isn't actually a Warden...

I'm not gonna lie, but I kinda burst out laughing when I read this. Ma'am, I've romanced Fenris every single DA2 playthrough I've run, which numbers about 10 times, last I checked. I'm about the biggest Fenris fan out there.

I recall Hellion was quite fond of Fenris
.
And don't worry, I'm keeping my expectations low for the hairs and beards
. Though DA's first engine wasn't that good, and even if they did a bad job in ME, compared to when those games were released, and Frostbite being a lot better then UE3, I think that they did a better job in ME compared to DAI.
