So I finally re-found the post from a few days ago that I'd meant to reply to but lost.
Better late than never, I guess? ![]()
You've touched on a couple of the things I find intriguing about Cullen: His sense of duty and his strong will. For one so young to go through what he did and remain standing is a very intriguing facet of him. That he does so without losing himself entirely to blind hate and then to return more to his previous morals is no small thing. He definitely has a sense of "doing what must be done" but he doesn't invoke it for convenience. And he objects to it when others do. He's willing to make hard choices, even when it would be easier (and supposedly "safer") to shirk his duty. So you're not alone in seeing his potential.
Yeah, this.
I need to fangirl for a moment:
The scene where I was most impressed with Cullen was one I didn't actually get to see in my "canon" playthrough because of the choices I made at the end, but after I'd finished both games I went back and tried other options and watched scenes on Youtube... and that was when I realized how freaking awesome Cullen is in the templar ending of DA2.
The moment I think Cullen is most impressive is not when he sticks up for Hawke - which was a good thing to do but didn't require much extra moral courage - but when he stood up for the mages Meredith wanted to kill. That was bravery to face not only death, but his own fears and scars.
I didn't realize it was coming, so it totally stunned me when all of a sudden Cullen... yes, Cullen!... was not only arguing against killing the mages, but arguing against assuming they were blood mages and stating that they could be entirely innocent. I was so surprised that at first I thought I hadn't heard him right. The fact that he was willing to give these mages the benefit of the doubt startled me after how he'd been at the end of Broken Circle.
I found myself wondering about that, if he now felt any differently about about the Kinloch Hold situation in retrospect. Cullen very kindly answered my question for me with his next lines.
He said, of course, that even in Ferelden, some mages were able to be saved, and they should do the same here if they could. It was such a reversal of his previous position that again, I was startled. Basically, though not in as many words, he admitted he was wrong about what he'd thought was right back then.
Then I just wanted to hug him when he said that yes, he would take responsibility if they turned out to be blood mages, because that's what templars do. He was not only willing to talk the talk, but to put his own career and maybe even life on the line for mages he didn't even have positive proof were innocent.
The whole time he was talking I was thinking wow Cullen, you are such a bad@ss! And I was super proud of him! He had so much to overcome. I'm sure he'll never be completely over what he went through, but he's pretty amazingly courageous for facing up to it as much as he has.

Aw, it's easy to forget in my excitement for the game how hard you guys are working to get it to us.
Still wish it was October already. I don't do patience.
OK, that's getting a tad creepy, guys and gals. You've probably traumatized poor Allan.
Besides, there are so many better things you could be doing with your mouth during sex than singing.
Yeah, I think my Inquisitor would be a little... confused about how to interpret Cullen's behavior... if he started to go into the religious stuff in the bedroom.
My Inquisitor is actually pretty devout herself, but I think the context would be rather off.
Or rather during it.
He'll be seeing Andraste by the time I'm done with him. ![]()

Allan's a grown man, is he not? Surely it takes more than just that to traumatize him.
But Andraste is dead ... My God, YOU'RE GOING TO KILL HIM?!He'll be seeing Andraste by the time I'm done with him.

Geez, black widow much? I'm getting the hell out of here.
Why are my likes gone? This sense of humor, I appreciate it! ![]()

Ok no wait. After some consideration the thought of it actually creeps me out. Horrible mental images. ![]()
I'm just sitting here reading your posts smiling.
Ah what an odd bunch we are.
Speak for yourself! I'm 100% normal! #blatantlies
Speaking of Andraste, I'm curious if having the blast happen at the urn of sacred ashes and having our protag walk out of the fade will be of a great religious significance?
I imagine we'll be blamed for it by some, but would others look at the Inquisitor as some sort of second coming? Maybe some far off village is sacrificing goats in our name.

Unless you're a college student like me. I FEEL YOUR PAIN ALLAN!
Best "Speaking of" tie in ever batteries!Speaking of Andraste, I'm curious if having the blast happen at the urn of sacred ashes and having our protag walk out of the fade will be of a great religious significance?

I would expect so, yes.
On a related note, I'm actually somewhat worried about my Inquisitor.
I came up with the character before I knew all that we know now, and... I would have been hard-pressed to make things more difficult for her if I'd been trying. I somehow created a person who is going to have major trauma triggers from pretty much the entire starting setup of the game. Hopefully she'll manage! I'm attached to her now and can't see myself changing to a different (easier?) character, so I'm just going to have to have faith in her.

So survivors guilt type thing or do you mean from her past before the incident?
All of the above.
Go me!
I have a feeling she's going to be crying to Varric over beers about her horrible green glowy hand.
I want to play a character who is in no way suited to lead themselves to lunch, much less an Inquisition. They'd end up having to anyway, but I hope some "I shouldn't be here" lines are lightly sprinkled across the game.
Cause so far it seems like the only reason the Inquisitor is the Inquisitor is because of the lamp hand. ![]()

lol, I ran out of likes ![]()
And I believed I wasn't a very emotional person.
@TreeHuggerHannah when Cullen confronted Meredith about those 3 mages, I lost my jaw on the floor. I never thought he would be able to trust mages again.
He also spared Alain earlier, although Alain was totally a blood mage, who just promised not to do anything evil ![]()
It was not only opposite of what Cullen wanted in the end of Broken Circle, it was the opposite of what Cullen was saying in the first act of DAII. That was really bada*s!
I loved how in Origins you could adamantly state your unwillingness to be there and exclaim your own cowardice.
Seems reasonable under the circumstances! ![]()
I think my Inquisitor will actually be a decent leader if she can get over her humiliation and self-loathing about the glowy hand. (Being marked by something she can't control is... not a good thing for this particular character, to put it mildly.)
