I love Cullen's character no matter what he did or didn't do; the more grey he is, the more intriguing as a character he is to me :) Of course I'll also enjoy him if he leans more towards the "white knight" stereotype, but I do like those shades of grey.

If I was obligated to murder-knife every NPC and party member that had done shady things in their past, Thedas would be a wasteland.

Ultimately, I focus on achieving the greatest good for the most people, with righting past wrongs a secondary concern.

True as well, although I really don't know what to think on this, but  truth be told if he did stand up to her sooner then we'd loose game play...If you think of it templar Carver doesn't stand up to her either until the end,and he's Hawke's sibling.

If you speak to him in Act 2, he states that the Templars have closed ranks, are not accepting outsider help and now question their recruits weekly, assuming that you told the Templars about the recruit's being possessed in Act 1.

It makes sense to me therefore that Cullen was unhappy with how his posting in Kirkwall was turning out, but Meredith's paranoia meant that he could no longer risk asking for a transfer elsewhere to back to Ferelden, because she'd have probably seen that as "proof" of people under her command acting suspicious.

It's not hard to imagine anyone under that kind of pressure knuckling under, deciding that if they keep their head down and ignore the worse of the abuses committed around him, maybe the situation would resolve itself?

Same here. :) That's why I'm really, really clinging to my puzzle piece theory. I can't wait to find out more about him and his motives, prior and future alike.

It's what drew me to him in the first place.  Under all that dedication and discipline there's this imperfect humanity, with all the good and bad that implies.  He also seems to search for the right thing, even if he doesn't always find it.  He's getting there, and I just love him for it.   <3  I can't wait for the chance to watch him develop up close and personal, and to be able to explore his thoughts and feelings a bit more intimately.  I'm still downright giddy that I'll have that opportunity in some capacity.

I know, personally I love grey and morally complex characters,as far as fiction is concerned.Although I still think that Cullen was probably oblivious or didn't know much about this particular situation. We were discussing the other day that even if he suspected something and confronted Meredith she'd probably dismiss it as rumours unless "solid proof"was brought to her, discouraging him from investigating it further.

True, although I was referring to act 3,the moment where Meredith invokes the right of annulment both Cullen and Carver could stand up to her immediately yet they don't until the very end, which I think is probably for gameplay reasons, and also in order to prevent the game from ending abruptly.

Oh, I definitely don't want him to be a white knight! I don't want ANY characters to be black and white. Ew. No. I get enough of those boring shenanigans in comics.

I just, personally, don't think he'd support rape at any stage of his trauma, nor do I actually think Meredith would support or ignore that kind of thing if she knew about it, to tell the truth.

...If Cullen DID support or ignore rape, though? That would definitely affect how I see his character. I might not HATE him, but I definitely wouldn't like him as much as I do. I can forgive and even like pretty horrible characters... but supporting rape, committing rape, being cruel to animals, and being cruel to the mentally handicapped is where I draw the line.

...I can also dislike 'nice' characters, mind, but... I probably didn't word this exactly right but I'm sure you all get the gist.

Edit: Mind you, suspecting but not having evidence so being unable to do anything is completely different.

Me too, what I find interesting is the lack of templar insignia on his current outfit, from the small glimpse we had of him in the trailer.

To be honest I'm going to assume Cullen didn't know about the rapes and the like, same with Meredith, actually. Yeah, Meredith was harsh and was slowly going cray cray because of the red lyrium, but I doubt she'd ignore something like that, either. It doesn't seem to mesh with her character.

This is what I believe, that neither Meredith nor Cullen knew about the abuses happening within the Gallows. I don't know what that says about their abilities as leaders (or Orsino's, really), but Meredith turned down the Tranquil Solution. I mean, Meredith of Act 3 would've jumped at the chance, but in Act 2 she says no. Something changed in those three years, and it had to be that lyrium sword. She doesn't have it when you meet her at the end of Act 2.

Even if it's an option, I'm not killing him off no matter what because that's less total content for me. But if he knew about what happened and is still unrepentant about it / felt the mages deserved it, my mage Trevelyan will probably start hoping DHMG (or some other LI if he's not one) is into the ladies. However, I think that would be wildly OOC from what we've seen of Cullen so far and I'm not expecting it to happen.

Of course, I'm not expecting or hoping for him to suddenly be retconned into some kind of secret Ser Thrask, either. As CuriousArtemis said, the shades of gray are what make him interesting.

I do think we can guarantee Meredith's non-involvement, based on Ser Alrik's letter, as well as her outright dismissal of Alrik's Tranquil solution.

I am having a sick day, and I was gonna ask what we were talking about but I don't think I will now.

I don't think Cullen from Origins or Da2 would let the raping of innocents go. I can only assume he didn't know about it or had too much misplaced faith in his superiors that he wrote off any rumors as absurd. He may have even privately checked into it and found nothing. (Through cover-up, fear, or bribery)

Me, too. Gosh, I just wonder about why he's not wearing any Templar insignia. [SNUGGLES ALL THE THEORIES]

Fear is a big one. I think that some of the younger recruits who wanted to go to Meredith were scared of Alrik and other upper level templars that were involved.

Ser Bardel,

I have told you a hundred times not to bother the knight-commander with your pathetic questions. She's a busy woman and has no time to nurse you through your crisis of conscience. You are under my command. If you take issues with my orders, you bring them to me, or I will see you stripped of your knighthood!

The mage Karl is dangerous and we must take steps to deal with him and any friends who are assisting his rebellion. I expect this done by next week. If I must see to it personally, I will also find out exactly why you failed to carry out your sacred duties.

The Maker has given us a divine task, Bardel. We cannot fail Him.

Ser Alrik

I also think this is the most likely scenario. B)   It's also possible that we may never know the details.

I'm still a little salty about how it appears we won't have an actual, proper Templar companion. Man, I would have taken chatty door Templar from Origins just to have a moderate Templar companion!

I literally learned about that letter about 2 months ago. It actually drops from one of the Templars you fight when you enter the Chantry to help Anders and Karl, but it jumps straight to cutscenes after the combat, so a sh!t ton of people miss it.

[TUGS ON HAIR] This game has a lot of those, doesn't it? [SIGHS] Guess I'll be reloading a lot when I do that fight. Reloading and taking a lot of damage.

Just make sure you kill the Templar Lieutenant first then there should be no problem.

Are we 100% sure that this is Cullen? His hair seems very different. If so, I'm game. Always liked Cullen and never understood the hate he gets.

It's on the Templar commander. Focus everyone on him so you can take him down quick first, and you'll be able to loot his dead arse before the cutscene.
