Fenris' view is rather more nuanced than just "Mages, rawr!" if you take time to discuss the issues with him.  :)

Agreed; like Cullen, people often skim the surface of Fenris' character and miss what a thoughtfully written and beautifully nuanced character he is.

Y'know, I keep hearing this from others, but I had such an instant, visceral dislike of the character from the way he was introduced, I've never really been inclined to get to know him better. OTOH, it's been forever and a day since I played DA2, so it might be worth giving in another shot. ETA: Which means I am more than willing to be converted on this issue, especially since so many people like him.

There was a moment when I honestly thought my Fenris romance wasn't going to work out for Hawke. It wasn't when he left after they slept together. It was when he asked her what magic touched that it didn't spoil. My Hawke was just shattered. She was thinking, "There's no way I can be with this person if he thinks of me like that."

Buuuut... later, when he had calmed down, she asked him what he meant by it, and he responded very thoughtfully about Leandra's death and how difficult it was that Hawke's family had to live in hiding.

Hawke realized that she agreed with him. Magic had made her life harder. The point just got lost in Fenris being verbally aggressive and then Hawke being defensive. Once they talked, they were on completely common ground.

That tended to happen a lot with Fenris and my Mage!Hawke. When she took the time to actually listen to him, they weren't as far apart as you might expect.

Hmm romancing Fenris with a blood mage made no sense, I'll agree. But romancing him with a mage was perfectly fine; it was thoughtful written here and there into the dialogue, and (here comes the controversial part) so long as it's a friendmance, I think it's perfectly healthy.

Well to me it depends how you see blood mages. Merrill is quite sweet and caring one, I don't see her doing blood sacrifices. To me being blood mage just isn't automatically bad. Though Fenris seems to have lot of bad experiences with blood mages so I understand why he could hate and never give Hawke a chance because of it. I didn't have problem to think my blood mage with him anyways since he wasn't pro-mage nor aggressive and selfish, pretty much opposite XD So I like to think that Fenris learned to trust him during the years they spend together ^^;

Ugh, I know what you mean. I couldn't stand Fenris for the longest time. In fact, I hated him up until March of this year, when I finally put my nose to the grindstone and decided to do a pro-Templar run. I think it's the romance that wins the player over. He seriously is a different character in and out of a romance with Hawke. And now I love the snot out of him.

My Hawke's (yes there are several ) weren't offended or hurt by anything Fenris said because they knew his words and his feelings were coming from a place of pain and fear. They loved him enough to want to help him through the pain and the fear. With Fenris, I always played Hawke's who had a "protective" almost "mothering" (despite being male) vibe to them.

Whereas with Anders my Hawke was always a bit immature and maybe a little reckless; I think you have to have a bit of a revolutionary streak yourself to be with Anders lol

My Hawke's who romanced Isabela were patient with her but also didn't judge her. I will say that Isabela's romance hurts the most, especially for a romantic Hawke. But it pays off; she does eventually settle down with Hawke <3

Yeah it's not about what I think about blood mages (I have no opinion lol) but more about what Fenris thinks of them. I mean the guy was raped and enslaved by blood mages; I get it lol

I keep meaning to do a pro-Templar run Just Because, but so far, I haven't managed it. It also doesn't help that I find the way Fenris expresses himself comes across as verbally abusive at times, which is hella triggery for me. Been there and done that IRL, don't want to do it in my game, you know?

(Please note, I'm not saying that he is actually verbally abusive, just that he came across that way to me.)

Actually I think it works out as a more loving, healthier relationship if you romance him as a pro-mage Hawke; pro-templar just feeds into his fears and anger.

I think you should, Fenris is great XD I mean to me he makes lot of sense after you talk with him. He has lot of anger and bitterness but under that I think he's quite reasonable and even sophisticated. I wonder why he has so much knowledge about various things even when he can't read XD

Same, although my Hawke was female. She was very protective and caring toward Fenris and was generally understanding when he lashed out because she knew where it was coming from.

The line I quoted just threw her because she thought he was trying to say that he couldn't ever love her. When she realized that wasn't the case, they were back on track.

She was fine with being supportive, because she understood that Fenris was hurt and thought he was worth it.

I do want to try it at some point, and now might be a good time to do so. When I first played DA2, I was not in a good place emotionally, having just lost my cousin and a very dear friend within a week of each other. The game was instrumental in helping me get through all of that. The downside was that Fenris managed to stomp all over some of my triggers at a time when I reaaaaly couldn't deal with it.

Protective friendship Hawke is best Hawke :D For Fenris at least  Gahhh thanks for bringing back all my Fen-feels :P

Ah okay ^^ Well for me I think it's more about personality of mage, or so I'd like to think it so Fenris would get over my Hawke being blood mage (well my headcanon for this is that my Hawke also was ashamed for being blood mage and didn't want to use it much). But of cource this is only my headcanon.

My only problem is that pro-mage me just HAS to romance Anders so I can have beautiful mage babies. XD Regardless of if I'm playing a mage or not. I think I'm broken. But if it's even better that way, I'll try it!

I completely understand. Maybe it was just me, or me seeing what I wanted to see, but I swear he expressed himself a lot better when I was romancing him. He still got angry and direct, but I really don't think it was as bad.

Makes sense.

I think real life stuff had the opposite effect for me. I have people lashing out at me on a fairly regular basis because they're either in pain or actually angry at someone who isn't me, so I guess I'm pretty used to just letting it roll off me? I think I probably have more ability to distance myself than most people do just because it's a skill I have to use a lot.

Honestly? It probably wasn't. As I said in another post, I was in a bad headspace when I initially played the game, and Fenris managed to punch me right in the triggers. But that was ages ago, and I'm more than willing to give him another go in the interest of fairness. :)

That makes perfect sense to me. I was an assistant curator at a museum before I retired. Don't really need those kinds of people skills when your job is sitting in a dusty storeroom measuring potsherds with a caliper. Hell, one of the main reasons I loved that job was because it didn't require people skills at all, lol! Just me and a box of rocks.

If anything I'm too distant about it. If anyone in my life legitimately hates me, I'll probably never notice because my response will be, "Eh, give it a week (or an hour) and we'll see!"  :P

I wonder what kind of OTP's people are going to have in DAI. In DAO it seems like there wasn't so much OTP's other than with people's Wardens but in DA2 there is many popular one's like Fenders and Meresino (ugh both are my NOTP's XD). I wonder if there is going to be OTP's with Cullen. Iron Cullen? Sollen or Culas? Cullandra? XD

I just hope there would be popular pairing that I like, it's hard to be lonely Sebris shipper, there is not much glorious fanart around -_-

 Cullandra? XD

I kind of ship it already. In a Mulder&Scully way.

But my OTP with Cullen will always be Cullen/Amell. Two lonely souls, so different and so alike, sticking together just because there is nobody else left from the world they had before Uldred's rebellion and the Blight. I just want them to be happy together some day. And live happily ever after until lyrium madness and darkspawn taint claim them.  ^_^
