depends.. who are Red Templars exactly? if they are Meridith clones i think he'd be fighting them (being a prisoner wouldn't look good in the 'best of the best' resume  )

I think the problem with Cullen starting out as a prisoner is that it makes Cullen appear weak, and already so many people dislike Cullen. If he's fighting, he's noble, and if he's fighting against the Red Templars, perhaps for mages, then that instantly makes him more likeable. It's all about manipulating people, really.

Yes, this would be adequate.   We could find him a little bruised and bloody, after he's done some butt-kicking from within. Could also allow for some role-playing, if you or your mage companion offers to heal him and he's a little wary of you. Strange mages wanting to use magic on him? Uuuuuuhhh... no.
