Also, if Cullen came from a commoner family, he wouldn't have a last name. Most commoners were known by their trade, hence the reason there are so many families with the last name of Smith, etc.

Not sure if they're keeping up with that in Thedas though. Wesley didn't much seem the noble type. Loghain had a last name, though born a commoner. Even the elves have last names, (and I suppose, despite being cut content, the human commoner would have had a last name too).

I dunno about that! When we had our Cullen party, that was one of the questions that was asked a couple of times.. so surely he'd have been aware of us not knowing the name situation.

Then DG lied to us? I somehow doubt that... Unless that tweet was just a mean troll tweet, but that doesn't likely.

I think again we're running into the fact that GE hasn't played the games and isn't a dev. It may not even be common knowledge at BW that Cullen is supposed to have a last name. Maybe it didn't even make it into the game. Maybe DG tweeted that and they later decided against including it.

The fact that GE is asking *US* I think obviously says that he just doesn't know, and that's all it tells us.

DG has addressed this, invoking the commoner vs. noble thing, that most folks just don't have one... but also that just because you didn't hear someone's last name, doesn't mean he/she doesn't have one. Which I think is code for: don't read into it, because it's not consistent. :D

Thank you. I wasn't sure if we knew of anyone by first and last name, so that answers that!

So then.. what's the difference between those who we know by full name and those we only know by first? Nobility aside, of course. Maybe Wesley had a last name *because* he was married?

Well "Vallen" is Aveline's last name. If Wesley's last name is canonically "Vallen," then he took it from her.

Aveline's husband had one. Wesley Vallen.
Also Evangeline from Asunder.

I think it's more of a Chantry foundling thing than just a knight of the Order thing. It could be that most lost folks have no last name. Look at Leliana. She doesn't mention a last name but I doubt it's because she was a sister. It could just be that she was so young when her mother passed and Lady Cecilie (sp?) didn't bother with it. It's possible most rootless people don't have family names. So when the Chantry receives a new ward, regardless of if they know who that child belonged to and accepted an abandoned or orphaned kid, they are now basically rootless - or casteless if you will - and so family names become unimportant.

Yeah, agree; I honestly think there's absolutely nothing to discuss.

I know this is totally off topic but do you but do you think knight-enchanters wield real weapons or make magical weapons or do you think they make floating magical weapons like the blades spell from fable that shoot forward to impale enemy's.

Just checked the wiki. It seems Aveline's maiden name was Du Lac.

For that matter, what exactly is the discipline regarding celibacy in the templars? Wesley's married but I got the sense in DAO that templars were supposed to be celibate. Or maybe field templars who are assigned to communities have less restrictive vows?

If I recall correctly, elves have 2 names because of one given to them by the clan and, once they're old enough, one that they choose for themselves.

That's what I was thinking, but I will openly admit to not knowing just a whole lot about canon, outside of anything specifically discussed in the game. So I was afraid to ask. ^^;;

EDIT: Or not.

No, Vallen is her married name. Her father's name was du Lac.

Templars don't take a vow of chastity, but marriages aren't all that common because a templar can't generally take his family with him. Like, the spouse would have to be able to financially and otherwise take care for themselves.

Probably for the best, she's Ferelden, the name's Orlesian. Not the best mix. Like our royal family changed their name to Windsor with the World War and everything because it used to be ridiculously German. And there's no evidence she changed her name with Donnic iirc.

I was so upset I tweeted DG about it lol I hope this is the true reason. I'd definitely be okay with that reason.

Thanks. So Cullen was tied in knots because he was attracted to a mage, not because he was attracted period.

Aveline: You're making a name for yourself in the templars.
Carver: And you've changed yours, Aveline Hendyr. Let me know if you ever need him run out of town or something.
Aveline: (Laughs) I will do that, Carver.

How weird that he only talks about marriage. So you're either chaste or you're married? Um. Okay.
