Well, the main point of organizing the gift-giving was to do something nice for Greg as a thank you for how kind he's been to us. If he no longer needs the games (if Bioware sent them, if he bought them himself, etc.) then a charitable donation has been suggested as a Plan B thank you gesture.  :)

If we're donating to charity instead, I might actually shell out a little more money.  :)

Yes, but sadly we can't all live in the UK. Besides, if I moved to the UK where would I get my triple bacon cheeseburgers and my guns?

Ah who needs those when you get your own castle and tea and crumpets with the Queen every other day?

Ah. The US is just beginning the painful transition to nationalized healthcare. There's a lot of opposition from all sides.

are yo talking about the Obama care?

Shall I assume you are heading up the Ser Cullen fund drive? If so, count me in.

I want to say that my first reaction was to panic and run away. :)

I believe there are other, more organized and/or qualified people to organize a thing. (I know Sister Goldring was talking about the game part and littlenikki was keeper of the list. :D )

That is probably the most beautiful understatement I've ever seen.

It's a start. Because of the way our f'ed up insurance laws are written, they have to start out with mandatory privatization. Obamacare has a lot of issues, and they're still working out the kinks (like, basically, the whole thing), but health insurance is big business in the US, and the government can't just ride in guns a-blazing and institute a workable system without at least 5 or 10 unworkable iterations that make people change the laws that prevent nationalized medicine from happening. Imagine what would happen if the Federal Reserve decided to switch back to a gold standard, and that's a pretty accurate summation of why you can't just replace the current healthcare system overnight. As much as I wish you could.

yea... health care is pretty damn expensive in the States In Europe .. depending on witch country you go too its about 1000-5000 euro for a surgery.. witch in the states would be hundreds of thousands .... without an insurance... but we also pay a sht ton of taxes tho witch is why our medical bill is much cheaper then the States

The first time I walked into a Walmart, I was 5 and it was so big and filled that I seriously thought it was a dragons lair.

When my friend L visited from Australia a couple of years ago, I took her on a pilgrimage to WalMart. She was so excited, she took pictures.

ETA: I should mention that our local WalMart had a live bait vending machine at the time.

It is also now tradtion that we eat at Outback Steakhouse every time she's here, if only so she can laugh herself silly at the American notion of what Australians are like.

Where can *I* get my bacon guns, that's what I want to know! Because I would totally load them up with extra-crispy and shoot them at all my friends so they could have tasty salty pork goodness!

Blech I don't go to Wal-Mart anymore for a couple reasons: 1. Some sick perv flashed me there a couple years ago, and 2. They are run by sick greedy f***s who exploit their workers.

Also it's wall-to-wall trashy people, at least in my neighborhood. *shudders*

In the end, it all costs the same. In England, they complain about 17% VAT versus New Jersey's 7% sales tax, but that VAT goes toward government programs like healthcare, which in the States is covered by premiums (payroll tax). The difference is that in England, you get to spread it out over the entire year whereas in the States, you have to pay for it all at once, and you're f'ed if you don't have it.

Unfortunately, they make a point of running small, local shops out of business so that they're often the only game in town. Just like what Barnes & Ignoble did to the small, indy bookshops back in the 90s.

This topic feels ironic. Just today there was a guy just down the street from me (an avenue that basically doubles as a highway, so lots of people) was shooting at passing cars and trees. And just now we had to shut all of our windows and bar them because there's a guy running through people's yards trying to get away from police.

I feel so safe.  :?

EDIT

My favorite thing about Wal-Mart are the parents that let their kids wear plastic bags on their heads. And the kids who lick the floor.... I try to avoid it unless I don't have much of a choice.

:D Jeeze, this makes me smile, Adela.  Walmart is truly awful, but sometimes I have to go there.  Sometimes I have no choice.  I always leave with headache.  Next time, tho, I'm going to try to see it like you do...I have a feeling it will help.   B)

I hope my husband's contract gets longer so we can stay in Europe so i can be closer to my family , I like visiting the states once a year... but ...not sure how I would feel about.. living there...

So I disappeared for the day because I read the Masked Empire (the whole thing, yes).  It was good.  I would give my loverly opinions on certain characters and what not but I don't know how to do a spoiler tag lol.
