Which is the perfect segue I needed to bring the conversation around to the thing of most importance to me, which is this:

DOES THIS MEAN I WILL FINALLY GET TO SNUGGLE MAH FACE INTO SER CULLEN'S FUR STOLE?!?!

... this is what mama's been missing.

Latest conspiracy detected. Fur stole suspiciously missing from relevant news about Cullen (who would care about the companion status, pfft). Is the individual called LolaLei implicated? ;)

So people here think Cullen will be a red templar??

No, I think he's against Red templars. He saw what red lyrium did to Meredith and I doubt he'd like to try it himself.

I pretty vehemently do not think this. :) I think he's maybe kicking some red templar ass somewhere.

^THIS^  I could def see us arriving on the scene as Cullen is fighting them.  We help defeat them and recruit him for whatever his role is to be from that point.  Something along those lines would be very satisfying, I think.

I think.... I don't know.

It's a big step to even take regular lyrium, isn't it? Knowing it's addictive, knowing it'll eventually impair you in a huge way. Knowing deep down that it can be used against you as a method of control...

And you take it, why? Because it will make your abilities stronger? Because your religious and professional leaders tell you to?

The same could technically all be said of red lyrium. :/

The only reason Cullen would have to mistrust it is the Meredith thing, and even then he may not have made that connection or could be talked into believing she mis-used her power and got her comeuppance for it.

So I really don't know.  It depends on how much Cullen knows about it and who *sells* the idea to him and how. :/  We think of red lyrium as "bad" when really it's just super dangerous. And you could say the same about regular lyrium, which he's already been taking (under Dr. Justinia's orders) for years. *shrug*

Oh okay :) I'm glad you all see it that way; I was a little worried  I think it would be great to encounter him fighting the red templars, though a rescue scene would be cool, too.

Brush, the lyrium thing has been retconned. You NEED the lyrium to use Templar abilities.

I bet red lyrium is what made him leave the templars. He saw first hand what it did to meredith. It'd make sense.

5 sovereigns that one of our speculations along the way was actually correct!  ^_^

Brush, the lyrium thing has been retconned. You NEED the lyrium to use Templar abilities.

That's good news. :)  But even still, he chose a career path that requires him to take a dangerous drug, right?

How much worse can red lyrium be? (hypothetical question -- the kind of thing he'd maybe have to ask himself)

I'm definitely *not* saying I think he's on the red stuff -- just that there's not a huge departure between one and the other. Regular lyrium is already a pretty extreme gateway drug.

Since Cullen is (or was) a templar and is almost certainly either using lyrium or fighting addiction (poor guy) I'm almost certain that some conversation about some temptation to try it will at least come up. It's too central a part of the story at this point for The Templar ™ not to face it in some intimate way.

Just byt theories though. :)

That would be an interesting twist, if he tried it because maybe the mages cut off their supplies from Val Royeaux. Or maybe, if he's a companion, we can convince him to take some, which gives him different talents than regular lyrium.

Thinky-thoughts.

I wouldn't bare to do it even during my evil-psychopath-scientist playthrough, for me that's pretty much like Giving Fenris to Danarius which I never tried either.

Yeah, I just think the writers could do a lot with him to make the issue personal for us. They could make the issue very black and white "red templar bad, Cullen goooood" -- but they almost never do that. :/  They'll want it to be gray and feels-inducing like every other issue in Thedas.

Think a lot of it could depend on when Cullen decided that his path would diverge from most of the order, too. If red lyrium became a thing before the split from the Chantry, or if it was something the higher brass got to try out before the rest of the Order....

I don't know. I just think there's a lot they could do with it. :)

Do I think Cullen thinks red lyrium is a great idea and that the red lyrium templars are the best thing since The One True Pantaloons? Nope!! ;D

Yes, at the end of DA2, the look on his face certainly seemed to indicate that he knew that red lyrium was bad news.  Unless something major happened after Hawke departed that forced him to make some difficult choices, I really can't see him saying, "Yep, gotta try me some of that nifty red lyrium."  Idk, but it just doesn't seem likely to me.

Yeah. Four big things I could never do in DA2:

1. Give Fenris back to Danarius

2. Give Isabela to the Arishok

3. Kill Anders

4. Side with the templars

No matter how much I tried to role-play. I wonder if there will be some DA:O similar situations. Forcing Cullen to take red lyrium would definitely be one for me.

But wasn't it red lyrium that make Meredith and Bartrand go insane?
