Oo, I would love some way of choosing your own background! I'm a control freak fiction writer type, so I like to have as much control over my character's origin as possible.  :D

Either way, I'm fine with playable origins not being a thing. I'd rather have those development resources focused on the main game instead of something that, say, doesn't even apply to 5 out of 6 Inquisitors.

Trevelyan means homestead on the hill? interesting. at first I thought that might be a refernece to SkyHold and all, but then I thought abt the other names:

from the wiki machine--

"A Lavellan, làbh-allan, la-mhalan or la-bhallan etc. is a mythological/cryptozoological creature from northern Scotland.

It was generally considered to be a kind of rodent, and indeed the name "làbh-allan" is also used for a water shrew or water vole in Scottish Gaelic. It was however, reportedly larger than a rat, very noxious, and lived in deep pools in rivers.[1][2] Its poisonous abilities were legendary, and it was said to be able to injure cattle over a hundred feet away.

Fleming, describing the Ermine, compared the prejudice against the animal to Sibbald's account of the country people's dislike of the Lavellan; Sibbald writing that the Lavellan was common in Caithness.[3]Thomas Pennant made enquiries about the animal while in Ausdale in the county, and it is also mentioned in the work of Rob Donn, the Scottish Gaelic poet from Sutherland.

Pennant claims the locals preserved the skin, and, as a cure for their sick beasts, gave them the water in which it had been dipped."

Adaar from baby names:

"1: Adar is used chiefly in the Hebrew language and its origin is Syrian. The name's meaning is ruler, prince.

2: Adar's origin is Hebrew. The meaning here is fire."

cadash.......?

Cullen / Celtic or Gaelic origin / meaning: handsome guy

Cassandra / Greek origin / meaning: Sister of men.

Vivienne / French origin / Meaning: alive-animated

Solas / meaning in Spanish: alone-single-lonely-one

Whenever I see the name Trevelyan, I get the song "Fields of Athenry" stuck in my head.

"For you stole Trevelyan's corn..."

I get the feeling this is going to be a serious problem for me in DAI.  :P

on backgrounds from the Vg247 site (though it was taken from that oxm article that got the locales so wrong---which is weird cuz they got alot right. odd that oxm would be sooooo wrong abt the locales. and odd to me that we wouldn't at least be going to Nevarra. maybe we were and it got changed?)

"Although players will customise their character, as in Dragon Age: Origins, all character will experience the same origin story in the prologue: the Inquisitor is the sole survivor of an event that results in Fade tears opening throughout the world. Appearance, dialogue and class choices made during this section will build out the character’s background, but one skill – the ability to close Fade tears – will be universal."

The "prologue" sounds like the Char. Creation part with appearance and class choices to be made. But the dialogue part is interesting to me. Does this just mean we will be picking our voices? Or are we actually going to be talking to ppl in the prologue? Cuz that would make it semi-playable prologue.

I imagine they might be doing something akin to Fallout 3, allowing to do some role-play during the prologue before launching you into the game proper?

Just seems like poor wording again to me... or he's just referencing something we have no concept of at this point. When he says "prologue" I think of the beginning of ME2 or DA2. But then he mentions selecting our appearance and class in this so-called prologue... something that is done AFTER the "prologue" of ME2 and DA2.

Oh but also remember how in ME2 when you're escaping with Miranda and Jacob they ask you some questions about your background... and by answering those questions, you solidify what happened in your previous game.

I was imagining it sort of like Skyrim - occasionally an NPC will ask your PC a question that relates to your background, and you choose the response that fits the backstory you have in mind.

For example, the NPC says says something like, "What about you, are you close with your parents?"

And your dragonborn can respond, "Yes, they're very proud of me," or "No, we don't get along," or "I don't really remember them," or "They're dead."

In the case of Skyrim it doesn't really affect anything except the NPC's next response to you, but I could see that being a way of allowing you to make some subtle decisions about your origin without a major origin story or detailed background in the character creation.

hmm, maybe it is something like that. a grand escape and ...questioning? maybe when Cass's soldiers find the inquisitor? they will prolly have alot questions abt this person who walked outta the Fade. After being so rudely shoved into it.

I really hope we can customize our char. before the prologue. I don't like having to rewatch the whole thing just cuz my PC came out of the CC looking run over by a bog unicorn

I had created my character before I knew the surnames, so unfortunately my poor mage lady is named Tempest Trevelyan.  :P

interesting. in DAO i think Morrigan asked my mage warden abt her fam, and i was like uh.....shyte did i miss that part? did i not read sum codex/letter i was supposed to? cuz idk anything abt them.

one thing i like to do in dao now...(after the da team released that xmas dlc extra packages for dao/da2 with the fun lil gear)--i like to pretend this non existent family of mine actually did exist. found out i passed my harrowing and somehow bribed someone or something ...and sent me the gift basket of rings and amulets and what not.

The CC happens the minute we click the "new game" button (like in DA:O) from the start menu. In the CC we pick our race, class and appearance AND pick from 4 voice options 2 for female, 2 for male. There will be a British accent option and an American accent option for both genders. After that the game/prologue begins, where (presumably) via dialogue we'd get to begin to cave out of characters personality when talking to npcs, including reason for being there.

It's pretty cool actually!I did the same with my characters, although their name&surname combination doesn't sound half as cool!

this would be perfect. i guess we'll be chatting up folks at the great meeting then. i'm very much looking fwd to seeing creepy azz haven again (if we go thru their on the way), and seeing the temple in frostbite.

i wonder if that Guardian fellow is still meandering abt? Maybe he's the one that pushes us into the Fade?

I like that name though; it has an awesome ring to it.

I think I'm leaning toward Auren Lavellan.

Which in the case of my Freaking Barmy Inquisitor was "Took a wrong turn whilst chasing a cloud, believing it to be spying on him..."

(My headcanon is that he already was a little mad before he lost his mind in the Fade)

I'm really glad I decided to follow this game early on, otherwise when it came out I would've spent hours sitting at CC trying to pick a name :3
