What did he record back then? I suspect it was something important, something they weren't going to change much. Maybe it was the post-Kirkwall story?

I have seen the trailer, where all the characters stand next to the Inquisitor, and Cullen, Leliana and a beautiful middle eastern looking woman/girl who all carried no weapons, but does that actually mean that he won't be a companion?
Perhaps he will fight with the Inquisitor during some quests/battles?

If this is indeed the case,then thank the Maker,the creators and every godlike being in Thedas for this upgrade! 
Although,I wouldn't be surprised if they intended to give him and important role and make him a LI,in earlier stages of development as well.

From what we know now, I don't like the idea of Vivienne / Cullen either. All we know of her character is that she's a powerful pro-Circle mage (which would both be a check in the Yes box for Cullen)*, glamorous and politically savvy (which are rad but I'm not sure he'd care that much either way), and cutthroat and catty.
Of course, I guess we have no solid evidence that he cares about those last two, either... I was trying to figure out just now why the idea of him being interested in someone unkind is so hard for me to visualize and I guess it's partially because my Amell was such an overly-nice doormat, haha. But from what we know I just can't get my head around it.
I'm amped as hell about Vivienne as a character, but can't ship it beyond agreeing that they'd be a physically attractive couple.

I want that too. Given the choice, my Inquisitor will romance Cullen herself so it'll be a moot point, but if he's not a romance option for her, I'd still like to see him happy with someone. He deserves that, surely.

Likewise. I think Vivienne is very beautiful physically and she sounds like a strong woman and interesting character - I like her!

I see manipulation as something Cullen would probably find extremely problematic after the things he's experienced, and I think Vivienne would struggle to be patient with someone who would hinder her playing of The Game, as Cullen almost certainly would.
They'd look pretty together certainly, but the personalities? I just don't see it working.

Hah, yeah, jerk move on my part to not even address the fact that Vivienne could easily find a more worthy partner (per what I am, by necessity, wildly speculating would be her criteria) as well.
If you were to do a Top 10 list of the things you love about Cullen, what would make that list?
1.) That he's a flawed person who makes serious mistakes, but in spite of that he constantly and sincerely tries to do the right thing.
2.) That in spite of being placed in a very stressful and confusing situation in Kirkwall, where it would have been so much easier to slip into being completely jaded, Cullen continues to care about people, from the templars under his command (as we see when we first meet him) to the mages in his charge (as we see in the templar ending.)
3.) That he was not able to heroically shrug off the trauma of being tortured, as fictional characters too often do, but instead he was realistically addled by it in the immediate wake of the events and also continues to suffer after-effects. That his suffering is not glossed over.
4.) That in spite of #3, Cullen seems to be making significant effort to overcome his trauma. By the end of DA2, he is able to articulate opinions about the events at Kinloch Hold and mages in general that are extraordinarily reasonable and forgiving under the circumstances. That doesn't just happen by chance - to me it suggests that Cullen has been actively processing these things for years and trying to come to terms with them, which takes a lot of strength of will. I admire that he has the courage to do that rather than just allowing himself to stagnate.
5.) That he is willing to put protecting others before his own life.
6.) That I imagine him as a man of deep but quiet faith.
7.) His combination of shyness and confidence - that he is clearly an introvert making an effort to be more outgoing for a job that requires it, which I think a lot of us can relate to in our own lives.
8.) His ability to remain reasonable in Kirkwall even when most people around him were descending into various forms of zealotry, which shows his strength of will and of principle.
9.) That if the female mage in DAO doesn't awkwardly sexually proposition him, he's so sweet when he offers to talk to her "any time."
10.) Great fan community, so there are wonderful people to discuss Cullen with. Very kind voice actor is icing on the cake.
