Oh? Care to elaborate?

Maybe he shouldn't. It probably won't go anywhere good.

Anyways, I've usually played as mshep myself; with his background in improv comedy, the one area where I think Meer has the edge over Hale is in the delivery of the more comedic lines, which is a hugely important part of how I usually like to play my characters. But in general, I don't see any issue with playing as a female even though you are a man or vice versa. For instance, I almost always play the female Exile in KOTOR II.

With this being a single player game what does it matter what gender you play as, I have never understood this.  The only time it would matter to me is in an MMO and if the person is taking RPing to a whole new and sick level and I have seen it happen before.  I recall two different moments back in my Everquest days the first was a guy who played a female character and pretended to be a female in RL in order to get raid level loot without actually raiding.  They took it to such an extreme as to have sexy chat with various suckers.  When the truth finally came out (don't remember how) this guy had to quit the game.

The other example also shows just how much sterotyping goes on in games.  I was in a very sucessful guild and while we weren't the first to do things we did get them done faster than most (raiding).  This was mostly due to an officer who was our raid leader who was a human male rogue.  All of this was before any chat programs so everything was typed out.  Everyone was fast to put praise on this rogue and for good reason until the day she let us all know her name was Kathy from Boise Idaho.  Once that cat was out of the hat this rogue had a very hard time leading anything because most didn't take her seriously because she was a she.  So I do get why some do hide their real gender in an online game.  Not really the same today but I am sure there are others out there like Kathy.

Thanks everyone glad to see I am not the only one/weird for playing a Female. I have played a Male in ME2. I ended up selling up which was stupid and now I am picking it up again..because I felt in the mood for Mass Effect. So I wanted to play as a female. My bro walks by me and says "Are you playing a female? Gay" lol sometimes he jokes but sometimes he seems serious..sometime I take it serious and other times I don't. And some friends just find it weird since they only play Male. Been playing some Female characters in MMOs too. I am not sure if it is a Mature thing (I am 21) or just that I have played too many Male characters and want a little change. Or that some Female characters in RPGs/MMOs just look better then the Males.

I've had two male Shepards and two female Shepards that I've run through the trilogy. I haven't done an Adept or Sentinel playthrough yet; I figure the former will be female and the latter will be male if I ever get around to it.

My first Warden in DA:O was female. I think I ran two females and two males through that game, too.

So as a guy, no, I don't think there's anything weird about playing a female protagonist.

Only guys who are insecure about their sexuality would call others gay for playing female characters in video games. I've never encountered any problems with this. In ME games however, I am not too big fan of Fem Shep, but in other RPGs I like playing strong female characters.

What exactly is wrong with being weird?

As to playing female characters, as a male, nothing is wrong with it. It's a videogame, last I checked. The people in it have no connection to you that you don't give them.

So recently I have started playing female characters in RPGs I have been called Weird and Gay for this. Not sure why. Is is wrong for a Male to play a Female character? I have played many RPGs before and all Males. First off for Mass Effect I love Jennifer Hale's voice. Sure I would relate more to playing a Male character but I don't know I just would rather play a Female character. Anyone else feel this way? I know I cant be the only Male who plays Female characters.

Some things to point out to those who can't figure out why a male would play as a female.

1. Do these people, who I assume are also male, enjoy staring at the male posterior in a game so much that they refuse to consider staring at the rump of the opposite sex? Because if so....... it's kinda telling. <.<

2. Do they have the ability to play as a female, as in, do they know enough about the oposite sex to make it convincing?

3. Don't they think that they may be cutting thrmselves off from an RPG experience from a slightly different POV? And so, are not getting as much from a game as those who switch between the genders?

I can play both genders, and it was reeeeeally wierd trying it at first. But then I went with playing outside my comfort zone and found I could play other things because I learned how to step inside the character's POV.

Table Top RPG's now enjoy a better class of Elf, Gnoll, Halfing, Genasi (which can have up to five personalities in one body). And also different ethnicities of human.

I'd say it's more about having a lack of imagination to think that playing anything but you gender is possible.

I am a woman and I can´t invest emotionally with female characters. I always play male. And I tend to prefer videogames with male lead. Same with TV series, movies etc. The only exception is probably Game of Thrones where the women is more interesting and strong than the male counterpart. But that´s a first.

I'm a guy and while I have no problems with playing as a guy, I much prefer playing as woman. For a simple reason that seeing a tough, muscular guy(ala Conan) save the world(or, in case of ME, the galaxy) is by now a cliche. Every(or nearly every) game has it's equivalent of Sheploo and it makes sense.

But a woman doing same deed? Now that is something new and refreshing and not seen that often. She doesn't even need to be a strong woman(though I don't dispute that FemShep is plenty strong in all areas that matter), but seeing a woman doing a man's work and being successful at it... that's always great to see.

I have to agree here. As I read this Halo came to mind. Master Chief saves universe kind of. Not many video games where a female does that.

Glad to get a female comment here that is the opposite.

I will say Danny is a great character. Though Jon and Tyrion are as well. (not to get too off topic of my own thread lol)

I'm a guy and I used to mainly play male PCs when I had an option. I saw nothing wrong with playing female PCs, just didn't do so often. After I got married my wife started watching these games. I started doing 1 playthrough of a game for her, she would design the character and make all the decisions. Since her hand/eye coordination isn't very good I play they game while she directs. Ever since then I now prefer female characters. I play both, games like the ME games I'll play many times. Usually what I consider canon are female PCs.

This is going to sound crazy but what is "Canon"? I read many people say that about making a femshep or female character. Not sure I understand what that means.

Someone may be able to explain it better but to me it's my "official" character. It's the one playthrough where I make the character the way I believe them to be, sex, class and such. I also make all the decisions in that playthrough based on how that character would act. It's how I believe the game was really played out.

While I have multiple Shepards or Wardens or Hawkes, I typically only have one in which I invest the most in for a completionist playthrough, and have a generally fixed set of events and personalities for each. My main Shepard always makes the same big decisions at the turning points of the trilogy (like choosing the VS, saving Wrex, sparing the Rachni queen, etc..). Aside from that, it's also the character that I pretty much place as the "face" of the game. My particular femShep is more familiar to me than the actual cover art itself.

Oh okay. Then I would say my femshep is my canon character as well.

Games allow us the chance to remotely control characters far different than we. Dwarfs, elves, gods,, animals, mutants... So why not a female? I can play with one with the same indifference I would move a queen piece at chess. I don´t feel gay about it, nor ashamed in any way.

In fact, if I had an option between staring at a character for hours and hours (like we do in mass effect) I would rather look at a very attractive lady.

Another reason why some people pick female shep is because they consider the work done during her voice sessions superior to male shep. I think they were both great.

Also, for the sake of completionism, female shep has not only some exclusive content in dialogues, but also exclusive romances.

I´´m not one who plays for the sake of inclusion. I don´t try to make the character behave like me, but more like himself would I would imagine given the info used in his creation. I also like to explore games and see all possible outcomes.

I don't know about other people, but I personally can't play as a female character. I just can't identify myself with her nor her actions for the same reason. And it makes me feel strange to be honest.
But each to his own, huh? I don't think it means there is something wrong with a person just because he or she plays the opposite gender. It's a game after all.

Flay anyone alive that gives you crap for it. It's a roleplaying game. Plus J Hale is amazing as Shepard.

I would secretly question any "heterosexual" male that prefers to stare at malesheps backside for 80hrs.

This. Same goes to MMOs. Heck, if you basically just end up staring your characters backside 99% of the time, why not make that experience at least tiny bit more enjoyable?

If I make male character, it's usually more like "me" character. It's easier to just make up stories for female characters (because they most certainly aren't "me" characters). In some games I just pretend that character x and y are twins. I think having more than just male/female character makes enjoying the story and character better.

wow, I actually feel the need to reply to something, instead of just lurking.

this type of thing really aggravates me.

when a game is created with a strong female protagonist, like say, "Tomb Raider," there is always all this hype about guys going nuts over it and even on facebook, I've seen it plenty with my friends saying how they love Lara.

but, when I tell people I've played a Female Shepard, and enjoy her more than Male Shepards... they treat me weird.

"but oh wait, you know that Commander in HALO:4?? She's so HOT!" lol - another Jennifer Hale character...

it's a character.  It's a character that we can choose to completely relate to, like making a Shepard look just like us, or we can make something our complete opposite and enjoy roleplaying them, or we can just enjoy creating a character, or even as my friend said back in 2009 -
"it's BioWare, the game has to be HUGE.  So if I'm staring at someone's rear quarter, it's going to be an attractive female's."

My main Shepard is female, she's based on someone in fact.  The fact it was Jennifer Hale as the voice actress just added icing to the cake!

you know what? it was one hell of a ride.  I enjoyed playing Mass Effect, seeing her be a BAMF, for over 5 years now.  I just finished Mass Effect 3 yesterday.  I know, I'm behind in the times... but being a stay-at-home Dad with a 3 year old can cause things like that... putting video games on a back-burner ;)

to be honest, I see myself more in Garrus than anyone, and my FemShep has a relationship with him.  Which, helps bring me into the story.

far as I'm concerned, do what you enjoy in the video game.  I don't understand how someone can laugh, and create, and even well, "fornicate" to pornographic images of made-up characters, and at the same time make fun of a guy playing a FemShep, or a girl playing a GuyShep... world's messed up.  If it doesn't harm anyone, do what you enjoy ;) screw the people that don't agree.  They aren't worth the time.

the people that do know my story, think it's one of the craziest, most romantic, and heart-warming reasons for a guy to ever play a FemShep. Those that judge me ahead of learning that?  They don't have the right to know, and aren't worth the time to explain.

as for you, MegaToxic - us guys that enjoy the "sensitive side" or the "finer rear quarter" or just a BAMF strong female protagonist with a gun, are here to support you.

my Shep (sorry for the craptastic quality... XBox360 FTW!! :D lol)
