I'm going to compile the list of rumors and speculations in Mass Effect 1 to try to get a grasp of what's going on in this universe.  There are many mysteries and factions in play.  Mysterious figures move in the shadows, playing a game of chess that we cannot comprehend from our poor vantage point.

Planet Junthor - Contains skeletal remains of advanced structure predating the Protheans.  Carving on a column has something interesting, Monsters from the id.  The reference to Forbidden Planet's ancient civilization creating monsters that eventually destroyed them.  This could be the civilization that created the reapers.

Planet Zaherux - Has seas of loose silica dust.  Many probes have been lost there over the years, an extranet meme goes around saying that the dust is actually nanobots that though usually dormant, wake up to defend the planet periodically.  These nanobots, if real, are suspected to predate the Protheans by a civilization more advanced and powerful than they were.  This might be reaper tech at work, seeing as the Protheans were probably the most advanced race as they were the ones that were able to replicate a Mass Relay to throw a kink in the reaper's plans.  Or it could be the work of the Collectors.

Planet Armeni - Millions of highly advanced crypts lie just meters beneath the surface of this planet.  They belong to a race called the Zeioph, but the Council considers graveyards as sacrosanct territory, so there has been no research into this.

Planet Altaaya - Once had an atmosphere.  It was violently and quickly stripped away by some unknown cataclysm of extreme magnitude.  What ever happened had to be BIG.

Planet Eletania - Location of odd silver sphere.  Knocks you out and grants you a vision of the Protheans studying ancient man.  Could they have had a hand in our evolution?

Planet Logan - A survey team that charted this area twenty years ago reported many strange disturbances in Logan's cloud band.  There were many remarkably large and solid objects beneath the cloud tops, but as the ship approached to see what they were, they subsided into the gas giant's thick gas layer, never to be seen again.

Planet Borr - Has strange coloration in the atmosphere due to ionized hydrogen filtering in from somewhere on the planet.  The source of the ionization has not been confirmed.

Planet Loki - The ice cap has a series of criss crossing tunnels beneath it in very regular size and shape.  Eventually it was deemed natural processes, but they might have been incorrect or unable to comprehend a species such as the collectors that seems to build things in a naturalistic way.

Planet Farcrothu - Some of its moons have been sculpted, yes the whole moon has been sculpted, in the likeness of an anthropodal alien race unknown to Council science.  Dating puts the sculpting at 500,000+ years ago.

Planet Patatanlis - Has a mass 4 times that of earth, but is in possession of an atmosphere way to small for its size.  Reasons for this are unknown.  Could be a fake planet.

Planet Ploba - This place has massive solid structures beneath its deadly and turbulent atmosphere, too regular in size and shape to be natural.  Some suspect it to be a "Jupiter Brain," a planet sized super computer.  An expedition of 12 find out what the "Deep Anomalies" were went tragically wrong, killing 12.  No further attempts have been made.

Planet Hunidor - Unusually smooth, some have suspected cryovolcanic processes to be the culprit, but there has been no evidence of a natural reason for the planet's smoothness.  Could have been glassed by reapers.

Planet Zayarter - Three times in the last century, ships discharging their drives reported geometric patterns of light on the dark side of the planet.  Attempts to discern what their cause is have been unsuccessful, as the lights disappear when they are approached.

Planet Jartar - Former home of the "Leviathan of Dis," a genetically engineered living starship.  Batarians estimated it to be over a billion years old, and then promptly confiscated it.  They now deny it ever existed.  This seems to me to be a Collector ship, as it is definitely not a Reaper.  Genetically engineered living starship.  Genetics.  Living.  Creepy.

Planet Juntauma - Alliance Defense Data Network noticed several ships travelling along near the planet with transponders turned off.  When an Alliance patrol attempted to pursue one, it "rabbited" to FTL speeds, erasing its trail amidst the signals of a shipping lane.  Pirates or something worse?

Planet Klendagon - Home of the Great Rift Valley.  It is an enormous canyon that can be seen stretching across the southern hemisphere.  The valley is not natural though, and it has been determined that is the result of a glancing blow from a mass accelerator round of unimaginable power and size.  WTF DEATHSTARS.

Planet Klencory - IMPORTANT********  Planet famously claimed by an eccentric Volus billionaire who had a vision granted to him by an advanced being to seek on this planet the "lost crypts of beings of light."  These entities were supposedly created at the beginning of time to protect organic life from "machine devils."  HMMMMMMMM....

Planet Farnuri - Once had an atmosphere, but a cataclysm has stripped it off.  Wow.

Planet Chasca - Has a synthetic ring of artificial origin around the planet that is made to be viewed from the surface of the planet as a sort of installation art.  The ring scatters light in various ways, creating beautiful vistas.  Who made it or when it was made is unknown.

Planet Quaji - Cursory scans by an Alliance survey ship noticed geometric patterns in the deserts located in the north hemisphere only visible in the ultraviolet band.  ????????

Planet Ontaheter - Unusually large ice planet, with signs of large scale fracture and refreezing, centered on a massive crater near the south pole.  Extranet meme suggests a Prothean ship dove into the planet to escape certain doom and now resides in the planet's core, giving the planet it's higher than normal mass.

These are most of the mysteries I've stumbled upon in Mass Effect.  What do they mean?  Can we somehow piece together what's going on by looking at these strange phenomena?

What do you guys think?  Let the speculation begin!

Wow, admiring your patience to collect all of them.

I think that these were written to make exploring more interesting, but I hope some of them will have importance of some short in the future episodes.

I think you should've posted them in the ME1-Storyforum. However, great work to assemble tham, i remember mos of them, but not every.

Armeni seems like a reference to the necron crypt-worlds of WH40k to me, every time i read over it.

Amazing, just amazing and thank you for taking the time to do this. I never knew there were so many interesting planets! I hope we get to see more in depth explorations with these planets. Hopefully Bioware didn't leave these out.

How about Armstrong Nebulae: Vamshi System: Planet Maji

There was that large skull you find that doesnt appear on any database...making it of unknown origin.

I figured Klencory would become an important planet in one of the later Mass Effect games: if not in this one, maybe the end of the trilogy. The fact that this guy somehow knew the Reapers were out there might mean that he'll find a way to kick their asses back into dark space.

I believe the skull you find is a nod to a creature from KotOR one or two, can't remember.

I think that many of these mysteries will remain just that. They are meant to hint to the other civilizations wiped out by either the Reapers or other causes (nuclear war, etc.). It gives the ME Universe a sense of age and depth. Some of them will certainly tie in with the overall story, however, and it will be interesting to see which ones.

Not sure About the others but... this one sounds too me to be an Easter Egg Relating too FF7...
But then that's just what it sounds like too me...

Good job ReDSH1FT, some of these I didn't even know about. no sarcasm intended.

Is it just me, or do some these replies seem little more than condescending.

Thanks for the positive reactions, I'm wondering what kind of catastrophe could cause the evisceration of a planet's atmosphere and what kind of a gun does it take to fire off that huge mass accelerator round. Or those weird geometric signals.. ARGH mysteries.

I agree.  Seems to me like Klencory will play a roll in the future.

I want to see these mysteries incorporated into the sidequests of Mass Effect 2. I hope the sidequests are not all run and gun and action-packed, cause that would get pretty boring. That would also mean that Bioware is missing a great chance to explore the mysteries of the galaxy and the things that make sci-fi so great.

I guess I'll find out on Tuesday, but if someone has already played the game and its sidequests, could you please post something to erase my doubts? =P

In the games (novels, a new trilogy mayhaps) that follow the ME1-3 trilogy, some of these planets may come into play. It certainly gives the writers many new stories they can tell and many new locations we can visit that might not tie into the current trilogy's storyline.

There's just so much we don't know. I think that some of those geometric lights are Prothean signals, or some other species' signals to show other members of the same species where they are located. They probably disappear when a ship of unrecognizable origin drifts nearby, in attempt to thwart the Reapers from finding them.

This thread and its theories are just amazing and creepy. Amazing nonetheless, I've stumbled upon this descriptions and many more, but never took the time to put the puzzle :)
