I recall that half-elves are supposed to be completely humans in appearance.

That's correct. In case anyone is interested, here is Gaider's quote on the matter:

Without getting into the "why" behind the elves-and-humans-produce-humans thing (which I've talked about before), I will talk about why we didn't deal with it in the game. Primarily it's because we didn't have room. There's a lot of things that exist in the Thedas world that we weren't able to get into in Origins -- part of it is due to limited resources, but part of it is also because to properly address it we'd need to do it justice. We were already introducing the races and their situations, and adding on the complexity of explaining something that does need explanation would... get us what, exactly? You can't play one of the "elf-blooded" (this is what humans with mixed parentage are generally referred to, though I imagine "half-elf" could also be used in a slanderous fashion), and trying to explain the presence of a small number of humans in the alienage (as a for-instance) would have diluted the story we were already going for. Trying to fit everything that exists into the world in one story, after all, isn't really feasible.

I'd like to get into it. I think it's a possibility that has the potential for good drama, and even allowing the player to be elf-blooded might be cool in the future. But like I said, I'd want to do it justice. If your view on it is that you wanted half-elves to be there, and their omission is a fault -- then so be it. I can't really argue with that except to say that we don't think they're required. As some people have mentioned, it's not a widespread thing. Many elves resist having human children for cultural reasons, and many elf-blooded children will live amongst humans as full humans simply because they can get away with it and hiding their heritage means not having to suffer for it -- from humans as well as elves. Some few might be public about their identity, and unwilling to leave their parents behind, but like I said that belongs in another story.

Incidentally, for half-dwarves the situation is a bit different. Dwarves aren't a very fertile race to begin with, and far less so when it comes to mating with humans and elves. In fact, it would be considered rare... rare enough that it's considered more of an oddity than a group of its own. The result is also less stigmatized... primarily because it's also less noticeable. You end up with what would appear to be a tall dwarf or a short human. That calls for a new model -- which we weren't going to get, even if we wanted to address such a rare case. Again, it's certainly something we could do in the future, though such a character would still be considered unusual.

I imagine for those who really like their half-elves that's not a very satisfactory answer, but I hope it offers some light on the why's and wherefore's.

Gaider also said (on the nature of elven and human unions producing a child):

The child of elf-blooded humans and an elf is another elf-blooded human. Whether or not such a line would eventually become more "elven" is unknown -- the elf-blooded don't tend to distinguish themselves as a group for cultural reasons, and more often then not find themselves living amongst humans rather than elves. Saying that elves have recessive genes obviously isn't the answer -- I said a long time ago on the forums that elven genetics were "adaptive", but that's just an attempt to explain the phenomenon since people were insisting on talking about genetics. The elves don't know why it happens, and there's no understanding of genetics in the world to explain it... if that would even be the reason. More likely it has a supernatural origin relating to the nature of the elves themselves, though what that might be and whether or not the elves were truly once the immortals they claim simply isn't known.

Yeah, it was really bad. The strange thing is that it affected only the Italian copy.

There's basically no fanart of Briala or Celene, but I sort of like this idea for them. I really, REALLY hope they (or just Celene if Briala isn't in it) looks similar to book cover.

The fanart is pretty good; however I think if you cover up Briala's mouth she looks slightly androgynous; almost like she's a little boy.  I also pictured her having longer hair or maybe I just missed the descriptive text regarding her hair length.  Celene looks good.  I never really pictured her as a stunning beauty but more of a slender woman with a pretty yet odd face.

I read Asunder some time ago and have been re reading it recently, and with all the buzz about companions and who will be what in DAI I really think that Cole fits to a tee for that companion spot.

Note this is really like, spoilery and how I interpenetrated the books and Cole himself. I could be really wrong but I donno I can't see anyone else but him working in the game from that book.

Also a silly amount of long.

We have two rouges who are long ranged rather then the stabby dagger type, which Cole fills. And even with the situation around Cole being hazy thanks to his manipulation of memory around people and being invisible, he still was really physical in the books when I went through it again, so it's not like he was completely untouchable. I also took his whole, being forgotten thing as being him doing it to himself without realizing because it took him until the end of the book to realize that he's not really 'Cole' but he is something that took Coles place so he wouldn't be forgotten. He had a physical body that he talked about number of times in the book, and became rather not lost come the end when the revelation hit him. He may have figured out how to lift the hiding memory thing he had, or because he was unconsciously doing it before since his memories was bonked from taking the place of Cole about what he was.

The fades all sorts of messed up right? Coles not exactly the same thing as Justice or a demon, he even says that and it didn't make a whole lot of sense for him to be either of those things. He's a grey area for a spirit of the fade, certianly when compared to the likes of the demons and the labeled spirits. He just 'remembered' at the end of the book, at the last scene he shows much more confidence and he is no longer helpless to not help anyone. He wasn't able to help 'Cole', but I always got from the last paragraph of him talking was that he doesn't want to be hopeless and unable to help anyone, he wants to right things and that's why he went for Lambert. He has no reason to be forgotten anymore, it was the begging last wishes 'Cole' had so I think he wouldn't be as easily forgotten in a party.

He went through his Cole angst and still probably has that as a spirit who wasn't able to help 'Cole', help out against the mage templar thing, be interested in the fade situation, there's a lot that Cole the companion can be. Obviously that would take away a romance thing because clear reasons and not every companion needs to be bangable as shown before, but I think from a lore stand point as this oddity for the fade and his possible interactions he can have with mages, having been there during that whole Asunder event (sure he was really focused on Rhys but even then, I think it was because it was less Cole trying to possess him and more a lost spirit begging for help. I highly doubt anything Lambert said was true about him being a demon in the same vain as the other demon in the book). It certainly seemed like to me at least, at the end of the book he has the resolve to help out the mages or at least stop all the gross stuff that is done to the mages like 'Cole' was. He has a great starting point from there, he can be fleshed out in the game for his personality and learning more about him as the weird thing that exists like a demon but not really one. He's really interesting once you get past the 'Cole' disguise he had been unwittingly wearing the whole time.

Him doing the murders in the book always read as a desprate attempt to find out who/what he was, and his only way of helping those infront of him because he was so indesive about how to actually help. Again that helpless spirit angle that can be turned around now to be more helpful rather then resorting to murder. There wasn't anything he could do but offer that to them.

I bet he would have really interesting hiding in shadows type of moves for back stabs or whatever else, making him a closer range rouge that we seem to be missing out on. A sneaky thief, throughout the book he showed slight of hand skill and was very good at being quiet and forgotten. It would be like a teleporting thief in battle, or someone who gets behind the enemies when they're distracted with the front and help out from there, but he's not invincible and could be punted away. We have plenty of archer rouges now with Sera being rather archery looking, that makes two long ranged rouges, and just from a gameplay standpoint I can see how they would want each one of their companions to play vastly different to each other. So that would leave a dagger sneak one rather then the hunter like builds.

Cole has this advantage of not being tied down to the blond scruffy hungry thing he runs around in Asunder, he could probably change his form, but I would imagen he would keep that scwany look either because hey it's there and also as a reminder to the 'Cole' he was. Just looking at the characters we have confirmed in my opinion we don't have a 'stick'. The elf mage gets close, but he's an elf, I don't think they have the physical capabilities to be fat.

All in all, I don't think anyone else in the books have that same opening as he does to move on from the situation into something entirely new. Adrian is tied up in her Libertarian whatever fest. Rhys and Eva are too busy being adorable together, and I doubt they would split them up because holy butts there was too much cute. Also uh, they have thier own issues with that group of mages rebellion. Lambert is evil and seems rather clear cut he's dead. Then there's... not much there else for new Asunder characters that weren't in DAO already. That leaves Cole, open and free not bound to any continuity in the book from joining sides. Perfect as a fresh cut stone to find out his personality, who he is now that he remembers what he is, skilled in the art of murdering peoples faces, his own reasons for existing in Asunder, there's just so much that makes me think Cole is prime for that spot. Even as a main character in the book you barely learned a thing about him, just faint things, nothing that a person would need to outright know to learn about his character.

...That and I obviously really like him and it's all totally wish fulfillment along side that logic blurgh, and they toss in the 40 year old firey brat of a mage Adrian. And if she was there, and presented like she is in the book, I'm going to have to throw her into a dragon.

I just finished reading Asunder for the first time and since most of my thoughts about it pertained to how it tied into Inquisition, this is as good a place as any to go into detail. First I have to say...well written book. That said, I really want Cole to show up in Inquisition, preferably as a companion. He seems to be in control of his powers now and he'd be a very useful asset, if nothing else. Kind of curious about whether or not he talks with an Orlesian accent.

And I actually think that the Mage-Templar conflict could play a significant role in the story if we go to Andoral's Reach. From the way the novel ended, the templars and seekers seemed to be on the verge of marching there and Lambert was prepared to 'starve them out'. Considering it's literally every important mage in Thedas gathered in one location, I could see why the Inquisiton would take an interest. I'm assuming that Inquisition starts soon after Asunder/TME end so it wouldn't be so improbable that the siege would still be ongoing. That would be a major choice for the Inquisition. I'm going to assume a large portion of the templars and seekers that didn't suddenly decide to go loony with red lyrium are taking part in the siege and they'd be a sizable boost to the Inquisition's forces. On the other hand, the help of the most powerful mortal mages in Thedas would be equally as useful. Something tells me a lot of people that read Asunder would side with the mages.

And Lambert...aw man, Lambert. If it wasn't for the fact that the final page was only two small paragraphs broken by a line, I would have thought a page was missing. I find it kind of hard to believe that Cole didn't kill him but I hope he didn't. He seems like he'd be a great villain for Inquisition. Or a powerful ally, depending on the Inquisitor in question. Just hoping he doesn't show up with crusted, stony skin and glowing red eyes talking about how we can control the demons. I'm kind of curious about how large the Red Templar faction is considering there are templars all over Thedas and (I assume) only so much red lyrium, and all of it tucked deep underground in a place even the dwarves didn't seem to know about.

And man, I really hope that if our Warden makes an appearance and had high approval with Wynne, they include a scene of them paying their respects at her ashes. If there actually us a siege of Andoral's Reach, I think that Shale will make an appearance so...woohoo! Actually, I'm kind of curious. Do you guys think Wynne's potential death at the Urn of Sacred Ashes will be explained away like Leliana's was or will the events of Asunder have been shown to play out differently in that world state? Evangeline (great character by the way, probably my favorite in the novel) would probably be dead and some other stuff would be different.

Oh, and I'd be very surprised if Adamant isn't the fortress that was shown in that one demo. It's in the Western Approach and it was stated to be a Grey Warden fortress. A quest that served as a tie-in to the novel would be pretty cool. I'm sure there's still demonic influence left over if the veil is so thin in the fortress.

Yeah, I think a lot of these people don't count as "from Asunder". Leliana, Shale, the Divine, even Fiona. None of them are really "from Asunder". Characters "from Asunder" are like Cole, Rhys, Adrian, Lambert.
