So... I am currently milking Alison from Lothering for money and XP by giving her cheap traps. I am just wondering if too much XP is a bad thing... Advice?

If there is a particular skill you're going for, I would suggest that you only level as far as you need to get that. The monsters level with the player, so it's not like you will dramatically outlevel the content.
Also, the level cap is 24 or 25, so I don't think you will break your game by going that far. However, I tend to be paranoid about such things and only just boost myself a couple of levels by using exploits like that.

Most ranked enemies stop levelling at level 20 at the latest, and grunts tend to stop levelling long before that. Only a few select enemies go higher, like Archie (up to level 22).
This means that grinding a bit of extra XP won't break the game any more than it already is, considering that you can easily go beyond level 20 even without all the DLC.
Once you hit level 25 the game will no longer accumulate your XP, which means that the only thing you get out of fights is the increase of the kill counter.

If I require a bit more XP towards the end of the game, I use the Item Chests in camp. This at least feels more beneficial; less exploitive in gameplay, IMO.

I use to make 100 traps for money early in the game but lately I haven't seemed to need it. It's pretty monotonous. It's probably better to get coercion.
