I believe it was because the first released image of her was of her holding a rolled papyrus or something like that. Posed like a "scribe." Without a name to call her, a nickname was given to her.
You are correct. The character showed up in the survey a long time ago. Here she is in it in the top right. She is holding a quill and paper so she is a scribe, hence Scribe Girl then Scribbles.
It's nice to see that during the chaos of the Inquisition, they all still know how to strike a pose.

I could see her as a mage, as that would bring balance sense the other 2 are a warrior and a rouge.

There was talk about it a few pages back, and there seems to be debate as to whether she should be a mage or a vanilla civilian, seeing as she's going to be our economic and political advisor. I personally go for civilian. Not everyone has to be a total badass in order to be useful to a war effort.
She could be the kelly of Da give us messages or tell us if one of are crew needs to talk.

If she has a class, I'm guessing Mage. There is the Lucrosian fraternity of the Circle wich likes to focus on political and economic influence. And we have yet to meet a character of that fraternity.
That said, I still think she'll be the only true noncombatant character to provide a unique perspective.

Personally, her not being a Warrior, Mage, or Rogue would make her even more of a bada** since she is a civilian stepping up to the cause.
