Fair enough.

I'll openly admit you likely follow the lore of the game a lot more closely than I.

My point was more that analyzing it from the context of how the accents developed on Earth may not bear much, if any, fruit.  As for Orlesian being "French," wouldn't that be somewhat equivalent to Ferelden being "English?"  Do you think it would work as well for a player that played the game natively in French (a language we support both for text and audio)?

I think it does bear fruit.

I'm specifically referring to why people in Thedas speak a particular way.

Hi all :). I finally got up the courage to actually start posting in the forums after months of lurking (I'm super shy, seriously, I'll probably try to hide under my bed or something after this post!). Anyway, I just wanted to drop off this link here for the video I made for the keep code poetry contest that Allegra did. It's just a silly little poem by one of my favorite poets, Emily Bronte, set to some music. I wouldn't post it here at all but, since it's a Josephine related video, I really feel like it's something you all here on her thread should have (even if it's awful...).

Welcome to the forums :)

You guys are all weird. We still know next to nothing about Josphine. Its quite possible some of you will end up not liking her, or at least not liking her as much as other romances.

The same can be levied for most romance content actually.

Some will be pleasantly surprised, some will be disappointed.  It happens.

Also of note: coming into a thread and telling the participants that they are weird isn't exactly a kind thing to do and is going to be seen as innately antagonistic

You know, when someone comes into this thread and tells us we are weird I think to myself: aww, thank you! Because honestly, we are weird. The BSN is weird by definition, and that's what makes it great. Nothing wrong with weird :)

That's fine. But as someone that grew up being partially ostracized as "weird' because of my love of games, the historic connotations bother me (less so now, however, and I've less issue with "being weird")

Um the reference to mafia princess was to the dwarf female from the cartel aka: dwarven mafia, and in no way a reference to Josephine.

Princess was used to denote being of important rank as well as emphasize the feminine aspects of the dwarf example being used.

I was making it in reference to my dwarven carta character who is perfectly comfortable and capable rubbing elbows with other women in high class functions and wearing girly outfits and discussing fashion.

There is nothing wrong with being girly, and princess is only bad if you choose to associate it with the negative.

There's nothing innately wrong with being a princess.

I believe this issue isn't with "princess" but rather "mafia princess" specifically.  (Although depending on context "princess" can be very negative too).

Which is clearly not the way it was meant.  Or at least shouldn't have been, unless it is to be assumed I'm trying to insult my own character.

Do you understand what you're referring to when you say "mafia princess?"

I understand the way it's being taken, but it's not what I meant.  I mean it kind of is, and kind of isn't.  Is really confusing me to tell the truth.  I'm not big on the mob or Italian culture myself.  Was used for the reasons I said, to literally mean a girl of import in the dwarven mafia who is perfectly capable in high class feminine circles.  Like I said, I do not know the first thing about italian mafia culture.  I suppose I'm sorry for misusing a negative term and getting defensive.  No offense was meant, and I kinda reacted like I was being made out to be a bigot or something.

Once upon a time I used the term "******" one time to refer to a Japanese person (in the context of WW2 video game to boot) without any ill intent.  It was simply a contraction because I was discussing troop movements for both Japanese and American units.  So I contracted one to ****** and the other to US, just to save on space.

Turns out that ****** is a racist slur (spawned out of WW2, appropriately...).  I didn't intend for it to be offensive, but it's not my place to say if it is or is not offensive.  When called out on it I was initially defensive, because I knew that I didn't believe I was racist.  I still don't.  But the idea that I made a racist remark made me have to reconcile that reality because how could I say something racist if I wasn't a racist!  Stating it didn't make me a racist, but after being informed of it and reconciling it for a bit, I opted to use a different term (I learned that "Japn" was acceptable, and still a lot faster than writing "Japanese" dozens of times).

It happens and people make mistakes without realizing it.

Cheers.

Genuine  question: would it still be racist, if you use it in a language where it exist, but doesn't have a history of being a racist slur ?

Good question. My inclination would be no, but I would think it would depend on the context being used as well as the audience. It's not something I'm familiar with, however.

Hey guys, this is Richard Boisvert. I don't normally visit the forums, but I just wanted to say thanks for making such a nice thread for Josephine and for all the shoutouts. :)

(Should probably talk to someone at work for getting my profile biowar'ed up... I look very illegitimate!)

TBH, she does have a hook nose.

If your intent is to simply troll the thread with "LOL ugly" types of posts your opportunities will be limited.

And as Captain Big Nose™ himself, I don't see the problem with the nose, thanks.

It was a joke aimed at the OP of the other thread. Lighten up people.

In context of your earlier post in the thread, coupled with the other thread being locked (and your explicit support of the OP of that thread) I think it's best to simply let it go and move on at this point.

Hey everyone, with Allegra visiting Edmonton for the launch of Dragon Age: Inquisition, we felt it was an opportune moment to get a picture of all of us who had a big hand in making Josephine come to life. I'd like to share the picture here for all of you.

Hi everyone. I’m Josephine’s writer. As a rule I don’t post here, but I thought I’d make an exception to talk about my intentions with Josephine’s romance, mostly because people seem curious about it.

In the previous romance I wrote (Liara in ME3) there was a more explicit sex scene near the end of the character’s arc. I wanted to try something different for DA:I – have the intimate moment be earlier, be implied rather than seen, and leave the level of intimacy ambiguous so players could fill in what they wanted. The scene where the Inquisitor kisses Josephine for the first time and the screen fades to black is, to my mind, the first place they may be physically together… or it may just end in a kiss. That part I wanted to be interpreted more by players, not myself.

Anyhow, I know devs posting in threads can derail topics something fierce, so this will probably be my only post. I do want to thank you guys for the thread and for the kind words I’ve seen. Hope you’re enjoying the game!

I'd like to step in here and address the concerns from my perspective as well. Sylvia, Allegra, and I were all pretty much in lock-step when creating Josephine and specifically her romance. What I think might provide some perspective is to really consider all that you experienced with Josephine as a character, how cute and innocent she seems, how Disney-esque her courtship unfolds, and ask yourself; do I really want to see the scene where they both get naked? I saw it mentioned before that it would have been good if we at least provided a choice to either see it or not. I just can't imagine a situation where that would have been what was best for Josephine.

I'm so happy that Josephine's romance was not a "by-the-numbers" romance. Think of the fantasy that Josephine's romance arc allowed you to experience; a gentleman's duel for love, a unique scenario the like of which we have never seen at BioWare and possibly never will see again.

*Cough* Or gentlewoman's.

Right! Clumsy me...

One thing you all might find interesting is that the "Pick up, twirl around, and kiss" animation was actually a piece we captured back on Mass Effect 1 but never used and eventually forgotten. I happened to stumble across it in our animation archive and thought "This is IT". Felt good to know we finally were able to justify that work ;).

"As for the dueling scene, yeah I hadn't thought about how hard and time consuming that scene would have been since everything from the angles of the swords to the twirling hug to the cuddling on the couch by the fire that night would have to be different depending on the Inquisitor's race and gender."

Cannot overstate this enough, the majority of my time was spent doing this. When you watch either of those scenes, you're only watching 1/8th of the work done.

Representation, yo!
