Yearning for the Horizon

 

 

 

Footfalls echo through Skyhold as Inquisitor Gwen Trevelyan makes her way back to her quarters. It was a serviceable fortress, but it would need a lot of work before it could properly withstand an assault, as the Inquisition had learned just a few days before. As she rounded the corner, Gwen spotted Lady Montilyet standing at the balcony overlooking the valley below. 

 

“Lady Josephine” she called. “Good evening to you”. “Likewise, Inquisitor” Josephine replied distractedly before turning back to the view. “Are you alright? You seem a little out of sorts” Gwen inquired. She saw the advisor’s shoulders sagged briefly as she let out a sigh. “It is nothing. I was merely daydreaming” came the response.

 

“May I ask what the object of your daydream was?” Gwen asked softly. She had learned early on not to be overly direct with Lady Montilyet. She was very fussy about etiquette and proper forms of address, Gwen recalled with a smile. “Oh, I was only thinking of my homeland. Antiva” Josephine said, melancholy coloring her tone. It was so unusual to see the normally cheerful woman be so wistful. Gwen stepped closer to her, hoping to offer comfort with her presence.

 

“It is very different from here, is it not? You must miss it”, Gwen said. “Yes, I do. Especially the sea. This view” she gestured to the outside “is beautiful. And the way the sunset illuminates the snow-covered peaks is wonderful, but it is… lacking in some way” she finished. “Because it does not move?” Gwen offered.

 

“Yes! I used to watch the sunset from my room in Antiva. I love how it colors the water. It is like the sea turns to gold! And the sound of the waves as they break against the shore is so soothing. I am not sure how to describe it, but it feels so… so alive and warm! It is like hearing the world breathe!” she exclaimed, and Gwen could see her eyes come alive with the memory of those sights. She smiled at Josephine. She certainly could relate to those feelings, having been born in Ostwick. Still, she found she did not miss the sea all that much. She loved the mountains and the surrounding forests.

 

“Here everything seems so cold and lifeless” Josephine’s voice pulled her out of her reverie. The advisor’s face had become sad again, she observed. “I disagree” she claimed. Josephine turned to look at her, an inquiring look on her face. “It feels safe to me here. The mountains are our walls, the trees provide warmth and shelter and the snow makes everything look clean. It reminds me that some things will always endure, no matter what crisis strikes them” she explained.

 

Josephine smiled at Gwen. “I never thought of it that way. It is comforting in these troubled times” she said. “Still, I hope I will see my home again” she added, the wistfulness back in her voice.

 

Gwen took Josephine’s hands in hers and held them close to her heart. “I promise you, by all I hold sacred, that you will see your home again, Josephine. I will do everything in my power to make it happen” She vowed, staring intently into the other woman’s eyes. Josephine’s face softened into a warm smile, and she lowered her head to the hands encasing hers. “I will hold you to that” she said as she placed a kiss on the Inquisitor’s hand.

I love this, especially the way Josephine describes the view back home, because it so perfectly captivates the serenity I always find emanating from the ocean upon view or listen (by the Maker that sounds quite sappy, wouldn't you say?) And as this part is essentialy the core of the entire fanfic, great job! Now only to frame it and hang it up on the Wall of Scribbles!

Well now that you mention it, could you write a fanfic on the likely present cultural differences between Antiva and southern Thedosian countries pertaining to violence and hostility and how that factors into Josephine's perception on the Inquisitor's various most trusted allies (i.e. the so-called 'companions'), and more specifically the Royal Court's enchanter, Madame de Fer, and how her presence might have an impact on the diplomatic relations of the Inquisition considering her background and political stances?

 

I am kidding, don't do that

 

Oh, I can imagine a longer fanfic involving Josephine would be extremely nice, coming from you. Hmm... already thinking of possible storylines.
