If you can't beat them, join them! Although in the case of Orlesians I suspect it would be the reverse...

The reverse as in "if you can't join them, beat them?"

Well then I hope I can prove them wrong and put their snooty asses in their place ;)

I've been wishing for an Orlesian ball for months now. Perhaps a masquerade ball in Celene's court in Halamshiral, I don't care, just a chance to show off before those pansy Orlesians :D

Perhaps with Josephine as our partner... or any other love interest, let's be fair (but an Antivan lady would totally rock in a masquerade ball).

However, I do expect some criticism from the Orlesian hosts. It would be a bit unrealistic otherwise. Orlesians feeling superior to those Free Marcher country dwellers, no matter how noble they think they are. Thinking that Qunari can only be dangerous heathens or brute mercenaries. Looking down on Dwarves as funny, yet nothing more than smiths or smugglers. And of course, my favourite:

Orlesian noble: "You, elf, bring me a bottle of our best Antivan wine. The Inquisitor is coming and I want to cause a good impression."

Lavellan: "Actually, I'm the..."

Orlesian Noble: "Less talk, more work! Damn lazy knife-ears..."

I CAN'T THINK OF THAT ACRONYM WITHOUT THINKING OF BLACK CANARY AND I'M CURRENTLY OBSESSED WITH ARROW THAT'S COMING BACK IN A MONTH.

*takes his breath*

It's actually an awesome name but you should've went for basement duck. For Josephine's sake.

And it's Allegra who likes ducks. Josie might only like them in a wine sauce for all we know.

And if BC is a problem, call me Your Tenebrous Feline Majesty!

But...  but that's just prove me to be a barbarian...  To beat them proper we'd all need to attend the ball, and I leave as the Belle of the ball, giving them a cocky wink as I'm announced ;)

Ooooooh can that happen I so want that to happen.  Them fussing over me, me insisting I know what I'm doing, then show them all up, that would be a dream!!! :D

Imagine if earning their respect gives you an achievement, like what happened with the Arishok. However, you have to prepare the ball very well, choose the correct attire, the correct partner and the correct options in the dialogue wheel.

Ultimately useless, but I can see people writing guides to get that freaking achievement.

Not an achievement person, but that'd be a very fun gameplay mechanic in and of itself!

I just hope the ball will feel like a battlefield... for Orlesian balls ultimate are just that: battlefields. And our date would be our army, or at least a large part of it. I imagine Josephine would make a very good army on this front.

The ultimate irony is that I also find ducks very tasty. You can blame my dad. He got me to try duck when I was a wee babby, and now I can't deny that they are tasty despite how much I want to cuddle them :<

I do also want to dissuade people from referring to Josephine as a mafia princess. This doesn't come from a canonical correction standpoint (since I obviously can't discuss anything like that), but more that it's just ... sort of a slur, at least within the context of Italian-American culture. You don't really call someone "mafia princess" and mean it in a positive, or even a neutral way--the term is very loaded and absolutely derogatory, particularly since it's an attack made at young, wealthier Italian (or Russian, as the other notable mob culture at least in the American Northeast) women. It carries a lot of "spoiled brat" and "taking advantage of dirty money" connotations as well. I know it's a trope term (thanks, TV Tropes), but it's also a real-life insult. If you wouldn't call Zevran a goombah, you shouldn't call Josie a mafia princess, particularly because she's from a country partially inspired by Italy.

The assumption that Josie's family employs or has employed the Crows is a very reasonable one to make given what we currently know about Antiva, and there is certainly a lot of room to debate this both before and after the game comes out! But it makes me cringe to see that term used for her given its real-life connotations.

Edited to add: I am so not angry at anyone right now, by the way! I just saw someone use the term and remembered it coming up a few times earlier in the thread after Josie was revealed, so I figured I'd provide the cultural context of the term :)

Huh. I, for one, did not know that. And I make it a mission to know as much of everything cultural as is humanly feasible. So thanks for the lesson, Allegra, and somewhat ironically, thanks for bringing up, whoever brought it up! (I'm mobile and tired and busy and the idea of scrolling to figure that out is currently even more daunting than... well, than making longwinded parentheses, apparently.)

Yeah, I've never heard "mafia princess" used in a positive context. Calling someone a princess of any kind is generally an insult, as Thor so aptly demonstrated.

I assume that Josephine finds the bloody business of Antivan politics distasteful, and considers murder an absolute last resort. And I would generally agree ... up to a point.

Vivienne should be included too :P

Josephine, Vivienne, and Leliana would probably try to dress the Inquisitor for the Party/Ball :P

Um the reference to mafia princess was to the dwarf female from the cartel aka: dwarven mafia, and in no way a reference to Josephine.

Princess was used to denote being of important rank as well as emphasize the feminine aspects of the dwarf example being used.

I was making it in reference to my dwarven carta character who is perfectly comfortable and capable rubbing elbows with other women in high class functions and wearing girly outfits and discussing fashion.

There is nothing wrong with being girly, and princess is only bad if you choose to associate it with the negative.

There's nothing innately wrong with being a princess.

It sounds like a case of cross-cultural contextual confusion on a broad scale, then. :) This entire conversation is news to me! I don't even know how I read the term, really. Just kind of glanced past it.

Might want to step back a bit and re-evaluate your position when it includes something like this. As a general rule.

I believe this issue isn't with "princess" but rather "mafia princess" specifically.  (Although depending on context "princess" can be very negative too).

Which is clearly not the way it was meant.  Or at least shouldn't have been, unless it is to be assumed I'm trying to insult my own character.

I understand the way it's being taken, but it's not what I meant.  I mean it kind of is, and kind of isn't.  Is really confusing me to tell the truth.  I'm not big on the mob or Italian culture myself.  Was used for the reasons I said, to literally mean a girl of import in the dwarven mafia who is perfectly capable in high class feminine circles.  Like I said, I do not know the first thing about italian mafia culture.  I suppose I'm sorry for misusing a negative term and getting defensive.  No offense was meant, and I kinda reacted like I was being made out to be a bigot or something.

Sorry, I misread your post and didn't see that you were referring to your dwarf! I have, however, seen other people use that term to refer to Josephine in the past, and so my point still remains.

That said, I still don't think "mafia princess" is an acceptable term to use in this case? I so love the concept you're going for with your Lady Cadash--TRUST ME, I am a huge fan of seeing confident, traditionally feminine women (cis or otherwise) in positions of power, and love that she will also clearly be a competent fighter and that her femme-ness is absolutely not mutually exclusive. I also understand that you're choosing to place those two words together in order to convey what you're trying to accomplish with your PC, but it is a real term with, as I said before, a loaded meaning, so I feel like a different term should be used in place of "mafia princess."

It's semantics, but it is a harmful term to me and to other women of ethnic groups that are systematically linked to criminal organizations whether or not they have personal ties to any crime families. But I love what you're going for, and can't wait to see more about her :)
