I wrote a silly thing. It has Josephine, and an Inquisitor, and somebody else.

The late afternoon was always slow at Skyhold, and to keep from being bored as she slouched on her throne, the Inquisitor had turned her mind toward the intractable problem of "the most amusing way to dismember demons". She was daydreaming of a combination of lightning and fire magic when her diplomatic advisor walked into the hall and interrupted her reverie.

"Hail, Inquisitor," said Lady Josephine Montilyet.

The Inquisitor's eyes twitched open. "Uh...hail Josephine."

"No," the Antivan noblewoman sighed, "you don't 'hail' me."

"Sorry. Right." Human court ceremonial makes no sense.

"Should we try that again?" The Inquisitor nodded. "Hail, Inquisitor!"

The qunari woman waved awkwardly. "Hell....llo. Whoever you are."

"That was perfect." Josephine's forced smile lingered a little too long. It's going to take years to teach her how to do this properly. "My lady, your summit with Empress Celene is fast approaching. Even if you lack the time or inclination to learn the specific minutiae of Orlesian custom, there are two things you should keep in mind at the meeting."

"You mean, on top of the 'hail' thing."

"...which was perfect. Yes. Henceforth, you're to refer to yourself only in the third person."

"Right. Okay. So I...what?"

"...no..."

The Inquisitor's brow furrowed. "What?"

"So, instead of saying 'I am listening', you say 'The Inquisitor is listening' or 'The Herald is listening'. It makes you seem more..."

"...crazy?"

Josephine shook her head. "Important."

"Right, so I-"

"-no, 'the Inquisitor'."

"I thought I was the Inquisitor!"

"Stop saying 'I'."

"Oh, I see," the Inquisitor started, before a tut from Josephine set her straight. "Oh. Sorry. 'She' sees."

The Antivan noble shrugged. "That was good enough. So you say 'she', or 'one', or 'the Inquisitor', or 'the Herald'. It makes you seem more imposing."

"Right. Um...I see. So you want me to-"

"Ah, ah, ah, no."

"Sorry. You want the Inquisitor - her, you want her...to seem more aloof. I get it."

Josephine shook her head again.

The confused qunari propped her head up with her fist. "What?"

This unhappy state of affairs probably would have continued for awhile if a certain blonde elf hadn't sauntered into the hall, calling out for the Inquisitor.

She turned her attention to the new arrival. "Sera!"

"Try it out," Josephine murmured.

"What? Oh." The Inquisitor folded her arms regally. "The Inquisitor is listening."

Sera did a double take. "What?"

"The Inquisitor," she repeated as she side-eyed Josephine, "is listening."

Sera rubbed her temples. "I thought you were the Inquisitor."

"Nope."

Now Josephine was confused. "Yes."

"Oh, sorry," said the qunari. "Yes...am I? But I thought..."

The diplomat tutted again.

"...but the Inquisitor thought...oh, I get it."

Another tsk.

"...oh, I mean, she gets it."

A head-shake.

"...she means, she gets..."

Josephine rolled her eyes. "Okay, Herald, from now on, every time you forget to refer to yourself in the third person, I'm going to clap my hands."

"I don't..."

Clap.

"...the Inquisitor understands."

Sera leaned forward. "What's this 'third person' thing?"

"New protocol," the Inquisitor mumbled.

"Ah."

"You bring news," she prompted.

"Mighty Herald, I bring you news," she started, then paused. "Uh, she brings you news...oooh. She brings, sorry, her news..."

"Sera?" asked the diplomat.

She held up her hand, trying and failing to get it right on her own. "No, I...are we...oooh...no. Ah. She...um...but...ooh. I...sorry, is it...what?"

Josephine squinted at her. "What are you doing?"

"We're all referring to ourselves in the third person!"

The Inquisitor nodded.

"No," Josephine said.

"...aren't we?"

Clap.

"I mean, them."

"Whatever. No, you refer to yourself..."

"I refer to myself..."

Clap.

"...she refers to herself..."

Sera butted in again. "Who, me?"

"No, me."

Clap.

"...I mean, her."

"The Inquisitor," growled the diplomat.

Inspiration struck the elf. "Oh, are you the Inquisitor?"

"Who," Josephine asked, "me?"

"Oh, I see!" declared the Inquisitor.

The diplomat waved her hands. "No, no, no. You're the Inquisitor..."

"Me?" Sera said querulously.

"No!"

The Inquisitor frowned. "You?"

"No! You're the Inquisitor!"

"Me?"

Clap.

"What?"

"Ohhhh," said the rogue. "I get it."

"Shut up," Josephine grumbled.

"No, it's very simple," she continued. "The Inquisitor is..."

The qunari pointed at herself. "Oh, I'm..."

Clap.

She pointed at Sera instead. "She's the Inquisitor, and I'm..."

Clap.

"...her."

Sera made a 'go on' gesture.

She pointed at Josephine. "And you're..."

"Who?" said Josephine.

"...the Inquisitor."

Clap-clap.

The elf threw up her hands in confusion. "Can we have a gong if we get it right?"

"No."

"Josephine, out of interest," sighed the Inquisitor, "what was the second thing to keep in mind during that summit with Empress Celene?"

"Ah yes," she said brightly. "'Don't look down her top.'"

The qunari woman glared at her. "The Inquisitor disagrees."

I have been slowly developing more of an idea for my ficlet that guest-stars Josephine.  Following on from my previous one, which features my qunari Inquisitrix, guest-starred Varric and is now officially titled "The Forest", this one will be called "The Judgement".  I may get to it at the weekend.
