My local Gamestop is having a midnight release, but the guy said I might be able to get it as early as 9 pm on the 17th. I'm so excited!

He did? Are you sure that's what he said? In my experience, 9pm is frequently when "finalization" occurs -- ie giving you a slip from the  terminal that'll guarantee lines run smoothly at midnight and you can very quickly get the game and head out. Normally getting the game three hours early from a retailer means the retailer is "doing something wrong" in the eyes of the publisher. Do you live in the West Coast? Perhaps your GameStop is taking "midnight EST" to mean the green light or something.

 

I don't know why I'm so intrigued by this.

I gotta walk almost five miles home and then if I play at all it'll be depriving me of the five or six hours of sleep I'll be able to get before I need to hop on the bus to school early in the morning. Drak. Feel your pain.
