I find the courtly love thing a bit silly because Thedas seems so much more modern than medieval in it's attitude towards romance. So I tend to think that if you're really both "yearning" so much you should stop mucking about and inventing impediments.

To be fair, we don't know all of Thedas to go off on in regards to that

She can't consummate with Blackwall because she's trying to rebuild her family name.  It's not like Blackwall is the Inquisitor and has all the power and authority that the title gives to the Inquisitor. Blackwall is a commoner AND a criminal, and he wouldn't dare tarnish Josephine's name like that, anyway.  Like she says, this way they can not waste their feelings for one another and they can both retain dignity.

Sylvia seemed to imply that this is something that is practiced in Thedas, and if you read the codex entries about marriage being more about bloodlines and titles rather than love, then it makes sense.

I find that DA has a horrid identity problem of trying to be a darker world than say Middle Earth and more on parwith Westeros or the Witcher universe.

But it also tried to avoid nastier issues like sexism, racism, etc... By applying 21st century attitudes liberally through out the series.

I just don't find it believable that Josephine's name would be meaningfully tarnished given how Thedas has been presented. Thedas doesn't seem to have that sort of screwed up attitude. And I mean if associating with Blackwall is an issue, then she's being a lot more public than a discreet affair has to be.

Maybe it would be more believable if it was an Antivan custom - they're at least sometimes presented as rather "proper", outside of the resolution to her romance arc - but it's supposed to come from Orlais

In terms of sexuality, yes, Thedas is much more modern.

However, in terms of family names, reputations, bloodlines, and class distinctions, it is still very much a medieval world.

What's surprising is less that Blackwall and Josephine have such a hard time getting together, but that the Inquisitor and Josephing have such a (comparative) easy time of it.  For the nonhuman Inquisitors at least.

I guess in that case the Inquisitor is already a big a power similar to a noble

Well the thing about Blackwall is that he's a notorious criminal/ And isn't also a quasi-religious figure. It's an enormous class divide so I don't find it that implausible.

Pretty much. Regardless of race or gender, the Montilyet family would probably approve of the relationship not only because their daughter is in love but that it greatly benefits them. The Inquisitor is the one who helps ends the decree that left the family on the brink of economic collapse and is now a crucial part of Southern Thedas.

One thing that bugs me is if in a relationship with you or just the coupling isn't activated yet, Josephine does not have a positive opinion of Rainier. And yet they also have her get in a coupling with him and her attitude about what he did takes a complete 180.

For marriage, class matters. We haven't seen any real indications that it does for love and romance and sex.

Though maybe my view is distorted by the special snowflake PC stuff.

I agree. I mean of all people.. Blackwall? Sigh.

Anyway, their romance goes no where, what's implied is they have a crush on eachother that never truly develops. Feelings like that come and go so.

Even better, really. An army at their command, vast political connections, land/estates that nobility are signing over to them, and the power to strip pretty much anyone of their good standing (thanks to Leliana and Josephine's maneuvering). The Inquisitor's just as, if not far more powerful and influential as many monarchs.

(Even if they don't have the power to can't get a servant to dust the spiderwebs or clean up the debris around their own castle  <_<  )

Combine that with the fact that the Inquisitor helps restore the Montilyet's good standing in Orlais, where the Inquisitor gains so much influence that the Empress or Emperor is in their debt. What noble merchant family would be insane enough to want to distance themselves from someone who can make them rich, at the least?

Hmm, maybe that's why Yvette was so excited to see the quiz?  :P

That doesn't answer anything though.

Yeah. I mean they pair her off with someone twice. Once with Otranto and again with Rainier.

It still does. particularly in Orlais, class distinctions really matter.

Celene having an elven lover was a dirty little secret.

Michel de Chevin's commoner origin could have gotten him killed if it became known.
