I got the dress done tonight! My camera, and the lack of natural light is messing with the colors of the dress. I will see if I can get a good pic soon.

I've been thinking about this a lot. Personally, I think it's because she has no character arc. She neither grows nor changes as a person throughout the entire romance, or indeed the entire game.

I also, on a personal note, really hated the duel scene.

Why does she need to grow? She's already a well-rounded, dynamic character already with a good back-story which explains why she became such a huge diplomat and advocate for negotiation.

And there is an arc, it's just not very "heavily dramatic" like the others. Someone puts out a hit on her family and she brings up a plan to negotiate for the contract to be withdrawn. But Leliana points out that the time for diplomacy has long since passed and she offers a more rational, efficient and swift plan to protect Josephine and her family (I believe that the contract was a hit on the whole Montilyet family).

Take Leliana's option and she quietly reconciles with the fact that negotiations don't always work. That there are times when you have to get your hands dirty a bit. Hence why she reflects on her brief career as a bard and confides in the Inquisitor.

Not every arc requires the character to make a major shift in mindset or personality or even for a major crisis. Character arcs can also be subtle explorations of personality or small lessons where they acknowledge that not everything is in their grasp or something to that degree. Or perhaps they learn something about another character that draws them closer together or increases the distance between them.

It doesn't have to... but given how little time is spent with Josephine's character, it feels like not enough has been done, to me. Especially when you compare it to the personal quests of Cullen and Leliana. I think the sparse personal questing for them worked, too, because they'd had two previous games to build them up, but Josephine didn't have anything at all.

Some characters benefit from being known from previous games: Leli, Morrigan, Varric, Cass, Cullen... Companions spend more time with your Inquisitor and fight side by side with your Quizzy.

But that wasn't my experience, maybe because I enjoyed Josie's romance (not for everyone, but it was great for me), maybe because I had the sensation that Cassandra and the counselors were somehow more relevant. They were in most of the important decissions and moments for the Inquisition. Cass, Josie, Leli, Cullen and the Quizzy were the head of the Inquisition, while most of the other companions were just operatives, with the exception of Solas and Varric. Yeah, they all have their moments of glory, but they don't contribute to most of your choices as Leli, Cullen and Josie. Somehow I felt more connected with the counselors and Cass than with the rest of the companions.

Anyway more spotlight and development for Josie would be great, and there are things I would like to know about Josie. What does she think about Leliana's steeling of enlightment moment? Is she going to choose being always with the Inquisition? Will she leave her familiar resposiblities to other one?

1)We were given insight into that during a cutscene.

If unhardened:

Messenger: "I'm told that Ambassador Montilyet is pleased with the...restraint you showed in Valence."

Leliana: "Ugh, she's positively beside herself. I will never hear the end of it. 'Niceness before Knives, Leliana! Haven't I always told you?'"

Or do you mean when she is hardened?

2) She says as much during the sunrise scene.

Josephine: "Whatever awaits us, my lord/lady, I know only one thing. I would never have you face it alone."

3) She seems capable of handling both.

Both personal quests involve them having a more twisted that you get to control yes. But Josephine is already a developed and grown character. Her experience being a bard did that to her. She doesn't need a change, or an arc that reflects her darker self, mostly because she's reached a position where she's become confident in the path she chose for herself (and it is a good path).

Her personal quest reflects how much she actually cares for her family, as well as how much she cares for diplomacy. Then it even reveals why she became that way which added the depth her character needed. She didn't need to struggle with her inner demons because she's already past that phase.

There's a saying I've heard: "If you're not depicting a character at the most interesting part of their life, why not?" It can't be because there are more future stories to tell, like Solas, or at least there don't seem to be even the slightest hints thereof. I don't think this is the most interesting part of Josephine's life, because apparently her major internal conflict has been finished, and in the Inquisition, she's just busy; there's no personal drama to be found.

Again, why does she need to have drama?

Drama doesn't automatically equal characterization and development.

I don't mean to be that guy, but that quote's grammar is slightly confusing. Other than that Josie's "most interesting part of her life" (at least from your perspective" was when she was young and reckless, should we have seen that in game we would've required a completely different character.

Frankly I quite enjoyed seeing a full-on good, capable, emotionally stable character. It's not like she doesn't have her struggles, but she's a mature woman who as I said before has chosen her own path already. I enjoyed watching her work during The Winter Palace, and I enjoyed her personal quest the most (next to Cole and Cassandra).

She has no conflict that's about her personally, and without conflict, there's not too much of a story. All the conflict is about her family, either their history with assassinations or them arranging a marriage for her; about Josephine herself, there's little.

I might be paraphrasing it badly. And I'm not saying that Josephine is a bad character, but I will say that I don't think much of her implementation. I'm not yet sure how she'd have been done better, but I'm thinking the matter over.

Not every conflict has to be about the person directly

Yup I was talking about the Leli steeled path, I'm sure she wouldn't like it, but there's nothing about it.

About 3, yeah, she's handling nicely both things, but she seems she has to work too much to do it. Maybe it's just me but I think she needs to relax a little bit. That's the reason of my second doubt.

Allow me to chime in as someone who majored in dramatic writing in college.  When it comes to film/TV (and more recently, video games), conflict is generally categorized as internal (think: battling a drug addiction or mental illness) or external (think: battling a gang or terror cell). It sounds to me like you would prefer more internal conflict for Josephine rather than the external conflict she deals with in the form of the House of Repose and Otranto. And I should note this, whether internal or external, all conflict relating to an individual is personal.

Obviously, since video games are a visual medium where action is king, most conflict you'll see in them will be external. Just imagine if DAI was literally just the Inquisitor overcoming their trepidations about becoming the inquisitor with no big bad whatsoever. I wouldn't mind playing a cerebral fantasy drama with lots of character study, but I'm sure most people wouldn't dig it.

Josephine is a fully realized adult who came to a realization of how she wanted to live her life long before she meets the Inquisitor, and I like that she knows who she is and won't be swayed from her beliefs. The fact is her identity is largely informed by her status as a noble and Antivan/Orlesian culture.

If the Inquisitor wants a relationship with her, they must deal with the realities of being with an Antivan noble who happens to be a diplomat, which means temper flares, duels, frilly clothes, and lots of politics. The inquisitor isn't here to help her find herself or to shake up her identity. They don't have the power to do that. Instead the Inquisitor proves themselves as someone who can compliment her as a partner and ally (at least I think my quiz did).

With that said, the external conflict Josephine deals with very much jives with who and what she is. She's a young woman who will soon become the head of her diminished noble house and she's taken it upon herself to restore that house to its former glory. It may not be a glamourous undertaking but it is a huge one and it's significant to her. It also turns out to be dangerous one and therein lies the external conflict.

Josephine is a grown woman who knows her station and her duties as a member of house Montilyet and won't compromise them for anyone. It's a key part of her character, so I really can't imagine what her internal conflict would be at the point where we meet her---getting rid of her doll collection?

As for the other comment about her staying with the Inquisition. My quiz asked her not to leave and her response that the maker would have to drag her away told me that she's set on staying with her, wherever that may be. I suppose that could cause some internal conflict down the line, as I wonder if she can truly lead her house in Antiva when she's all but declared the Inquisitor's fortress her home by the end of the game. I feel like it's more fair to let someone else take over, but that's just my opinion.

Great analysis.

As for my comment Qunquisitor has explained it much better than me. I doubt she could be the de facto leader of the Montilyets and the Inquisition's diplomatic face forever. It seems a titanic work.

I have no doubt in my mind that Josephine would be sad for her friend if Leliana went the hardened path.

To be honest, I think she is used to it. She did serve as the de facto leader of the Montilyets while also serving as Antiva's ambassador to Orlais for years. In fact, from the character bio we have she loves the challenge. That's one reason why she took the position of ambassador for the Inquisition in the first place.

But I like to headcanon that my Inquisitor helps lessen the load by helping her with some of it.

I like to headcanon that my Inky retires to Antiva. As the embarrasing former hero everyone has to put up with.

Maybe travel the world a little, too. The civilized parts, that is. No more evil wilderness. Mostly cities.

Andventuring with Josie

Joe, that is your next task. You have to make dolls for the Josephine doll. It will be a dollception. :P

I am going to need a magnifying glass and really small needles, or I could go get one of those hipster cotton ball chicks. I saw them in the Easter section and they look kind of cute. I could have Josephine and her stuffed chick Duke Fieldswork. :D
