I'd say near the end. The last mission definitely should probably be right before the final mission. Or at least after Thessia.

I always do it after the Ardat-Yakshi mission, and before Thessia.

If Tali is going to show up for you (if she´s alive), then after she´s set to work in the engineering section. So she will have more talks with you.This happens after the priority rannoch mission, if you side with the quarions or make peace between them and the geth.

I've played it at differnet parts of the game. Now I play it mostly after the Monestary mission or after Thessia.

I'd say sometime after Rannoch so that you'll have all of your squad mates (they all comment on missions).
It also works best if you wait until after the Ardat-Yakshi monastery side mission, because in the Leviathan DLC you'll encounter banshees. In the Ardat Yakshi monastery mission some of the squadmates will react as if that is the first time they've seen a banshee, even if you've already run into them in the Leviathan DLC.
Also the last mission of the Leviathan DLC is best saved until after Thessia, because some of the dialogue with the Prothean V.I. on Thessia will no longer make sense if you've already completed the DLC. There is an info drop at the end of the DLC that won't be acknowledged on Thessia, so it works best if that info dump occurs post-Thessia.

I do all but the final planet in between the coup and Rannoch. Once Rannoch wraps up, the narrative takes on a certain "urgency" that IMO makes it hard to justify too many more diversions. However, the Prothean VI's dialogue on Thessia really doesn't fit if you've already finished Leviathan.
Also, without giving too much away, if you don't take the "Renegade" approach in the third visit to Bryson's laboratory, a guest character will give Shepard a pretty good reason for deciding this is more trouble than it's worth at the moment and only going back to it later.

First 2 missions can be played whenever, last one after Thessia, kind of a must. They modified Catalyst conversation to influce Levi info but didn't touch Rannoch-Reaper and Vendetta dialogues, they don't make sense if you play last Levi mission before Thessia/Rannoch, Shep just asks questions he already knows answers to.

If I'm romancing Tali then I wait until after Rannoch, otherwise I do the whole thing right after the coup attempt. I keep intending to stretch Leviathan out over several missions, but once I start I like it too much to stop.

I do it as a mini-arc.
So something like:
-Asari Monastery
-Ex-Cerberus Scientists
~~~
-Geth Dreadnaught
-Save Admiral
-Geth Consensus
-Rannoch
~~~
-Leviathan1
-Leviathan2
-Leviathan3
~~~
-Thessia
-Sanctuary
(note that this list does not account for Omega and Citadel DLC order)
But yes, the good rule of thumb is:
1)Start Leviathan1 AFTER Asari Monastery. If you're not going to do that mission, then don't worry about it. Try not to have it interfere with Rannoch arc flow though.
2)Leviathan2-Leviathan3 flow together better than Leviathan1-Leviathan2 do, so try to do at least those two together.
3)Finish Leviathan3 AFTER Thessia.
Yes, I know that my list says otherwise, but that's only because I like to do it as one arc. I could just as well go:
-Rannoch
-Thessia
-Leviathan1
-Leviathan2
-Leviathan3
-Sanctuary
...and that would work. I just like to clean up all DLC possible (except Citadel DLC visits and Party) before going to Thessia, so I go with that. But for optimal story flow, yeah, do Leviathan (especially Leviathan3) AFTER Thessia.
It is also acceptable to do it after Sanctuary, but the urgency after Sanctuary can make that a bit weird (it does this to Citadel DLC as well, but I still have no actual complaints
).
My general rule for the DLC's is to wait until the enemies that appear in the DLC are encountered in the main game. For example, as other people have said, Banshees appear in this mission so the story flows better if you wait until either the Monastery mission or Thessia until starting Leviathan.
And unlike Omega, the weapon mods aren't anything to write home about, so there's not really any game play incentives outside of experience (although I do find the SMG armor piercing barrel to be quite good).
Last playthrough I did Omega as soon as it was available, and it was fun. Still think they should remove Aria off the citadel once you finish Omega though. Her reasoning for still sitting in Purgatory afterwards makes no sense, unless seeing Afterlife in a half-reconstructed condition is too depressing.
One good route, if you're really one to spread out DLC content instead of doing it together, is:
(From Ashes done before Coup)
-Citadel Coup
-Omega1
-Omega2
-Omega3
-Omega4
-Asari Monastery
-Ex-Cerberus Scientists
-Leviathan1
-Geth Dreadnaught
-Save Admiral
-Geth Consensus
-Rannoch
-Leviathan2
-Citadel1
-Citadel2
-Citadel3
-Citadel4
-Thessia
-Leviathan3
-CitadelActivities (Visits, Arena, Minigames)
-Sanctuary
-CitadelParty
-Cronos Station
-Ending (Extended Cut)
That would be preferable in some ways, but I have a hard time with Shepard doing anything other than heading straight to Sanctuary after Thessia, if only because
Plus, after Sanctuary, it's pretty clear from Hackett's dialogue that there won't be time for any more side missions once you initiate Cronos, so it actually does make some sense for Shepard to wrap up a few loose ends at that point if you assume that the rest of the fleet isn't ready yet anyway.
That has to be one of the more downright odd things Bioware did in the trilogy. I can understand if making Omega a second hub wasn't in the cards, but is Aria so important to the rest of the story that she absolutely has to be there on the Citadel? Even if it was just to keep her merc recruitment missions available, she and Shepard could communicate long-distance about that.
And a better explanation might have been that she met up with Jacob, who convinced her of the merits of staying on the Citadel to talk about important things you have to do but never actually, you know, doing those things.
I always do it after Thessia as that seems the most logical time to look for a new way to defeat the Reapers as you have Cerberus steal the plans out from under you.
- Omega I would do after Citadel Coup.
- Citadel I would do before Cronos station, I just seems right.
- From Ashes after Palavan.
I usually do Leviathan after Rannoch, usually before Thessia, though sometimes just before I do Citadel
