Do we know what Briala's origin was from?

Her parents were servants to the nobles, I believe. But she considers herself an Orlesian City Elf, even if she doesn't live in the slums or alienages. Near the end of the book she even goes so far as to declare "I claim the Elvuians for the elves of Orlais."

girl, bye

Well we know her parents were servant's in Celene's household.  It's also stated that she and the Empress to be grew up together, so Briala's about as Orelesian as you can get with pointy ears.

It depends. What would side with Briala mean? An elven state or more right for the elves?

Equal rights like the common man. That means no more raping and killing without getting throne in jail.

Separatism is more likely.

I just don't really see a reason to care much about him, in that case.

I found him to be very sympathetic.  He's the child of an elven protitute and an unknown father, grew up in absolutely wretched conditions until he was taken in by a kindly nobleman.

Since then, he's tried to reinvent himself, to make himself ito something more. To not let his past define him.  He pushed and pushed to become the best, eventually rising to become the Empress's champion.  His battle cry of "I am Ser Michel de Chevin!" is quite meaningful.  He's defining not just himself in his but who he wishes to be.  What he has turned himself into.

Briala's act threatened to turn him back into that elf-blooded orphan in the slums again.  And then executed for daring to try to rise above that.

Cullen Thread is here, folks.

So, uh?  Wouldn't it be cool if we ran across Fellasan's body while exploring the Dales?

I still think we'll see him in the Fade

My contention is that helping Briala free the elves can lead to less bloodshed in the long term, even though some will die short term in the conflict. If the chevaliers can't kill elves in their initiation rites, if the elves can't be killed with impunity by nobles, if the guards can't abuse their positions against elves, and if entire populations can't be purged en mass, it can lead to more lives saved in the long term.

My elven Inquisitor would support Briala.

Less Elven bloodshed possibly unless they like non-elves start getting killed in the crossfire between two warring armies of which the casualties will continue to climb as long the war persists

And what of the non-elves that will die don't they matter?

Maybe, but I'm hoping for a body.  Fade ghosts don't carry loot.

It's not explicitly clear in TME, but Felassan remarks that Briala wants to "free" her people with the Eluvians. I would hope for the former, but I would accept the latter as well.

He tied himself to the wrong horse. One that's long overdue for a trip to the glue factory, if I might extend my metaphor that far. The entire chevalier institution seems far worse than I had thought, if what LobselVith said about their initiation rites is true.

I feel like instead of blaming the Chantry or Celene, Gaspard should take most of it. That's why you should read the book, Xil. It's a lot more complicated than "let's burn down Halamshiral."

Evil is such a strong word. I'd call it... a very uncivilized manner of initiating someone into one's ranks ^_^

We could save that they do not support the basic right to exist for allThis is a real problem. They are killing innocent elves as blood-sport. I think the book even said that if you corner and beat a pet dog it will attack. This can not continue. I will not support them if they want the status quo.

They have to change or I'll burn them to the ground.

Evidently playing a hand against the elves as well. It's still only a possibility, but a growing one.

All the Divine wanted was for Celene to end the uprising.  How was entirely up to Celene

Gaspard did somewhat force the conflict, but it was still Celene who ordered Halamshiral to be stomped on. So, I think they are equally at fault.

Oh I agree that its really wrong that they kill off elves simply for sport, but I think Evil is just a silly word ^_^

Ser Michel de Chevin can change. I think he will. In the end, i believe that he will not support the killing of innocent elves.

Oh, believe me, Gaspard is my main target. To be honest, I think there's a fair chance that Justinia won't even be alive when DAI comes out, but I will not, in hindsight, target her for this alone... I'll have to know what her overall policies are, first.

Celene, on the other hand, is a backstabbing little weasel whose main advantage is her not being a vicious imperialist.

Equal rights like the common man. That means no more raping and killing without getting throne in jail.

What would make you believe that those 'rights' might not be revoked later, after the Orlesians managed to overcome the problem with the Eluvians (not saying they would necessarily revoke them)?
And equal rights in Orlais wouldn't fix the elven problem in the rest of the Andrastian countries, though it'd definitely be the first step.

It's not explicitly clear in TME, but Felassan remarks that Briala wants to "free" her people with the Eluvians. I would hope for the former, but I would accept the latter as well.

Thanks for the clarification.

He didn't "somewhat" force her lol, how else was she going to end that and still keep the respect that was needed? How else could she lay those rumors to rest without causing more reason for uprise?

Yeah there are some pretty horrific stories about chevaliers in the Dragon Age literature.  But Michel, and to a lesser extent Gaspard, demonstrate that it's still possible to live by their codes and be decent individuals.  Many simply...don't.

And in the end, Michel keeps his honor, leaves Celene's service, and goes on what may well be a suicide mission to put down a very powerful and malevolent demon Fade spirit he unwittingly released, to atone for the deaths of the Dalish it killed

I think it's very possible Justinia will be alive, but as for Celene being backstabbing? How? because of what happened to Briala? Loyalty to your girlfriend is nowhere as important as loyalty to the people you rule. I'm not saying crush the rebellion was "being loyal", but something had to be done. You tell me another way to end the madness while still keeping the peace during a massive Mage/Templar war.

I didn't say their deaths didn't matter, but it can lead to a better future for the elves, and less bloodshed in the long run. If it ends the tyranny against the elves, then I think the conflict is justified.
