Hello everyone!

 

Romances have been a topic of discussion for many years in Bioware games, including the sex scenes - which I will bring up in larger detail here. While at first this topic might seem juvenile, I think that how a sex scene is treated says much about the feel and mood of the game. If it's poorly done it might harm the experience, and it can be argued it should be left out entirely because it might no enhance the player experience.

 

There's been plenty of different sex scenes in Bioware games (and other games!) before Inquisition. So, which one of the following would you prefer to be used in Inqusition?:

 

1. Fade to black (https://www.youtube....h?v=uBFIzdbx7w8 and https://www.youtube....h?v=HKAbJhiCJNo)
   The scene fades to black as soon as it's clear where it's headed and you get to use your own imagination. Simple but fairly effective, and no risk of nudity (unless there's a cuddle scene afterwards, which might show some skin). 
    
2. Sex, but in underwear (https://www.youtube....h?v=LvGu0xLFwJc)
   There's sex, but no nudity.
    
3. Nude sex, but with clever angles to hide nudity (https://www.youtube....h?v=Pl-I09LjCkk)
   Far more risque than number 2 - includes tasteful nudity.
    
4. Full frontal sex (The Witcher 2 sex scenes, wont link due to forum guidelines. Google it, but beware of nudity)
   There's sex with full frontal nudity but without being obscene. Leaves little to the imagination.

Well, I don't really have much of a preference except I don't want to be watching porn. I often play with my teenage daughter in the room, so I don't want it to be something too out there.

Well, I tend to think that option 2 is silly.  It's not really realistic.

 

I also think that option 4 is a bit unnecessary, especially for a Bioware game.  It doesn't really fit the tone of the game that well.

 

So, I guess I'm down to either 1 or 3.  I would prefer 3 because it's a mature game, so it's more realistic.  Option 1 is just a bit boring and lackluster.  So, yeah, I'm in favor of option 3.

If 3 is done well, yes, but I'm skeptical of it being done well. Plus it's a lot of resources.

 

2 I'm fine with, as long as it doesn't look silly.

 

1 is fine.

 

But at the end of the day, it doesn't matter to me as long as it's pulled off well.

Mass Effect 1&3 both handled love scenes pretty well. Just copy the same formula. Tasteful is clearly the way to go.

3, keep it subtle but dont treat us like kids, mass effect style was a good example of this and im glad they used it as an example of what they want to go for. If people need to see everything, watch porn.

#1 I'm fine with. It lets you know everything that's going to happen between those two characters, although I think at this point people kind of expect to have the sex scene in BioWare games and it is a bit underwhelming.

 

#2 I feel is the worst of the lot, and probably the one we're going to get given recent games. It just looks silly to see two people going at it when they still have their underwear on.

 

#3 would be the one that I prefer to see in the game. It doesn't go overboard while at the same time not looking really silly like #2 has a tendency to do.

 

#4 seems like overkill and most of the time just ends up feeling like an excuse to show some boobs, because boobs.

Dragon Age: Inquisition Cinematic Director Jonathan Perry says the third installment of the Dragon Age franchise will attempt more ‘mature and tasteful’ sex scenes, taking cues from Mass Effect.

 

“Something that didn’t work well is that we tried more, well I won’t say graphic, but in Dragon Age: Origins we had characters crawling around in their underwear and it looked weird because they were wearing these lacy Victoria Secret panties and outfits which looked out of place,” Perry told the publication. “Certainly when you have these characters interacting with each other in such an intimate way it’s incredibly expensive in terms of animation fidelity and getting it to look like they are really there and touching each other. I think Mass Effect’s scenes were done really well and I think we will take Inquisition’s scenes in that direction. You might have a nude character but they are framed in such a way that parts of them are in shadow, or having characters in various states of undress.”

 

 

So it looks like a middle ground between 2 and 3.  Which is fine by me, as it's not full on nudity (which I don't want) nor the "giving each other the 1000 yard stare while in our underclothes" look from Origins.  I still find it funny that Morrigan basically had to put on a bra for sex.

Option 1 is low risk and seems just fine to me, it gets the message across and is hard to mess up.

Option 2 seems silly but option 3 is fine if it's done well.

Option 4: just no.

I will take fade to black. I don't buy games for the sex scenes, I buy them for the character, gameplay and story. .

Number 3 I think is the best of those options. I also think Bioware said something to this effect.

I never minded DA2's fade to black. I probably won't mind creative camera work to hide stuff, but it really depends on how it's done. One thing I liked about DA2 was that the scenes were crafted with the personality of the LI in mind, so I could conceivably think that one LI might go better with a fade out, but another with creative camera work.
 
We'll see...

Ok, poor joke. I guess 3 is ok, I wouldn't mind 4 but it's not much of an important issue for me.

Agreed.  I doubt having an engine that was a little old when Origins came out really helped matters.  Then that creepy stare.  <shudder>  I like the few BioWare romances I've done, but in Origins, I hit escape for the sex scene every time.  Too awkward and silly looking.
