I was never talking to you, or specifically about you. I was commenting about the general tone of this thread, and every other thread on this topic.
You went out of your way to address me, remember?
There is a reason I addressed you -- I disagreed with you. I think your claim that sex scenes don't add anything to literature (even if we stick to saying, "plot and characterization" which are not the only components of literature), is false.
Now, can they add anything to a video game? Guess what point's coming next
-- I think it depends on whether your game is aspiring to the quality of good literature, or not. Frankly, I played this game called Leisure Suit Larry many years ago, and I think it could practically be a manual on how to depict shitty, pointless, poorly written/scripted, low-quality sex scenes in a game. It had some funny moments, though. Larry was such a lovable doofus, and he had an enjoyable earnestness.
You know, this has always been kind of a secret heart of video gaming. Just like nobody's willing to talk about how porn has been behind a lot of the technological advances of the last 30 years (adoption of the VCR, development of video streaming tech). I remember one of the first mono-color, low-resolution 2D games a friend of mine had on the Apple II was a strip poker game, and I think that was around 1982. Of course, yes, the opponent was always female, she seemed to lose more often than random chance should dictate, and always lost clothing articles each time that happened. But then, it was 1982.
But of course, the video game medium is both textual and visual, although that balance has been shifting.
And then we get into the whole problem of if it's in words (like Shades of Grey), it's erotica. But pictures and video or anything visual, well, that's porn. I don't think so. There's plenty of visual erotic art, some of it even depicts actual sexual activity as well as nudity. In our newfangled technical era, some of it is even 3D and animated. Is there no difference between it and Debbie Does Dallas? Personally, I would disagree.
