That phrase is used more in correlation with the incompetences of others.
I was thinking more along the lines that the only way to ensure that power is used correctly; and by "correctly" I mean "in ways that I can agree with"; is for me to be the one holding the reins of power.
Ultimately, I am the only person I can trust to not abuse that power.

First, I would mend the relations with Ferelden by respecting and adopting some of their customs. For instance, their decree that defending an elf against a human carries a penalty of death.
