Celene.

While she is not without flaws, her goal of making Orlesian culture prominent is a worthy goal. She's trying to usher in a golden age of Orlesian culture.

Gaspard on the other hand, wants to go to war, and since I like King Alistair, I'm going with Celene.

I'll have an answer for you in about six months after I install DAI on my PC.

Celene.

She knows what's important in life.

Hodor for Orlesian emperor.

But seriously, I kind of see this as a similar situation to Bhelen vs. Harrowmont in that both candidates have their pros and cons.

For example: Gaspard is apparently the lovechild of Ned Stark and Tywin Lannister, which is aces in my book. He's a strong believer in the Chevalier's code of honour, but he's also ambitious and a warmonger. And he was mean to Teagan.

And Celene ruled Orlais for...what, 20 years? She must be doing something right, and yet she is proven to be a master manipulator who'd arrange her own failed assassination attempt just to get people to rally behind her and do just about anything to cement her rule.

I guess if I had to choose, I'd have to ask myself this:

What do they have to offer the Inquisition?

I honestly don't know. Celene may be better for Orlais and Ferelden, but will she respect any deal she makes with the Inquisitor?

Perhaps only when it suits her, and then when she feels she has no more use for the Inquisition she'd renege on any deals made and force you to go to Val Royeaux and burn her palace down with her in it. Her and her magic thermos.

I'd trust Gaspard to keep his word at least, but I'd also trust him to find some kind of loophole so that he could at once subvert his code while satisfying it. And then we'd go and burn his house down.

Well if Gaspard becomes the EMPRAH, it's easier to make Warhammer 40K jokes.

There is no chance of that happening.

Yes! The humans had their turn and just made a mess of everything. Let's give the City Elves a shot.

Depends on my Inquisitor and how the plot progresses, but first glance after finishing the book? Celene.

Also really hoping all the highly important backstory flows naturally over the course of the game instead of just wagging its finger in a "well, you should have read the book" sort of fashion.

I don't play many games, but I've heard from folks that do that apparently Diablo 3 and World of Warcraft have been really bad about that. I also had the misfortune of playing Final Fantasy XIII and experiencing that as well.

I hope this conflict has shades of grey, like the Skyrim Civil war, rather than an obvious good faction, bad faction. At this current stage, I want Gaspard, I find him more awesome and more trustworthy, but I also don't like Celine so I'll admit my bias openly.

If Celine wins my favor after the game comes out either she worked really hard to get it, or Gaspard colossally screwed up to lose it. But for now, Gaspard all the way.

It depends on the character I'm playing, and how Celene and Gaspard act in DAI.
I can see myself siding with both of them.

That's something I will probably never be able to do - I can't switch myself off (meaning: I will decide on the course of action according to my morals and my sense of right and wrong...I can't play a dick or someone with some sort of attitude I would never project in real-life)

As for the question:

Well, I have not read "Masked Empire" yet (it's in the process of being shipped to me...will get it Saturday probably => freaking' christian "Good Friday" holiday (note: I dislike church and will tell them to stop considering me a member, when they start charging me church rates (yes, good old germany, a state so nice and secular that church still gets that collected for them by the state...so very progressive, even more as being a member does not cost a penny in other countries!) which I am not willing to pay...I much rather put all that money (for all my working years!) into an account and have a nice sum once I retire...or spend it on stuff, like going to the movies - rather then paying those old creeps for things I don't partake of anyway (and for believers: I am inclined to say, that Jesus would agree with me, after all he threw out the peddlers in the temple as worship (if you are a believer, which I am not) does not need money or even a church (as an organisation)), BUT:

For me Gaspard de Chalons is a wannabe usurper with backwards views (which makes him lose a lot of points in my book) that plunges his country into civil war in order to satisfy his lust for power (even less points for him) - I don't see any other reasons (valid ones, like fighting oppression, establishing a fair system of governing or something along those lines)...maybe the book will show me some

As for Celene - well, I don't know much about her, other then her having an elven confidant she listens to (which is getting her points as I like elven people in positions of power and influence, after all they are living pretty miserable lives (even the Dalish - constantly on the run, slowly going extinct hanging on to past glory and knowledge they are slowly losing)), that she was willing to (or at least interested) in marrying Cailan (that she even considered the King of a third rate power (that had been only recently been part of her country) speaks of her being open minded IMO (which again scores her points)...there was something about her ascending to the throne...but I don't remember it clearly...

So all in all, if I had to decide right now (on the spot, without being able to get more information):

I would go with Celene!

Might decide otherwise after reading the book or playing the game once ;)

greeting LAX

A Ferelden King and Queen. Covered in blood after the long battle.  Sitting there with Dog by their side.   I also can see an elf.   :D

Both have pros and cons.  Honestly at this moment, I find Gaspard a worthy opponent.  Sure, Celene is great at playing The Game and has done a great service to her people, but I feel that he is more tactic on the battlefield. I also don't see the elves caring either way.  They'll fight til the very end.

I can see it now:  Gaspard taking the throne and planning to take over Ferelden once his troops have recovered.  Another war no doubt would be inevitable.  Also, I want to see if she'd ask for aid from Ferelden if the civil war was turning for the worse.

These ideas are, of course, just me rambling.  I'll have to wait and see what they offer in the future.

Alistair. That would be hilarious. Or Loghain, if he survived DAO.

I'll probably be in Team Gaspard.
