Something I've always wanted to see for player mages (and enemy mages) in Dragon Age is the use of Magical protection barriers.

I know we've had a barrier talent before in DA2, but I'm suggesting something on a larger, static scale that protects from ranged missiles. I think it'd create some interesting strategies for battles, especially for enemy mages. Would you have your rogue sneak behind enemy lines and disable the spell caster, or have your warrior charge head first? An enemy mage could position a barrier over elevated archers or reinforce their warriors.

Aside from the possibilities in battle, I also think they look really neat  :D

Apparently you can do this with the new ice wall spell.

I so want this! Especially if you can see the arrows and other projectiles bounce off of the shield.

I did notice this in the leaked footage.

Do you suppose the icewall will take damage from the enemy? Or will it stay until it times out? Or maybe even burn down if you cast fire spells near it?

A quick question about the pic`s . Are they from a game ? In the last pic an archer looks like she is firing an arrow out of the shield is she ?

The first if from The Witcher 2, the second I think is from one of the Final Fantasy games, and the third is from Lord of the Rings:War in the North.

From what I can remember about the game, she is actually a loremaster(mage), and the barrier blocks enemy projectiles while allowing team arrows/spells to pass through. I think you could upgrade different effects as well, the shield could heal those within and add damage to talents that pass through it etc.

There's an article in another forum that says apparently it could melt from fire? It's all pretty speculative at this point. I wouldn't get too excited about it until we get much closer to release and Bioware shows off gameplay more.

I see.

Well regardless, it'd be great to see some new talents for mages. As showy as fire and ice are, they are very overused. At least this 'ice-wall' sounds like its something other than using elements to freeze/set alight.

I hope for barriers and traps from the primal spells as well. A wall of rock would be much stronger than a wall of ice, and electrifying the ground so that it would shock and stun anyone who walks over it would be awesome.

The second one is from FFXIV and it doesn't actually look like that in-game. In game, it's just on the ground, nothing actually envelopes anyone. I wish it was that cool.

It also only prevents 10% of damage.

Usually whenever I've seen barriers like that, they either last awhile and don't actually prevent much damage, or they prevent a lot of damage but only last for a couple seconds.  Guess I'm not that excited about having them in DA.

In the game that the 3rd pic comes from, it was one of the most useful talents in game http://youtu.be/MJKjRyRuTaQ?t=1m33s
