I never understood how jumping adds to a game?  Unless the game is a plat former which this game will not be how dose it help?

For me, it's avoiding the annoyance of being blocked off by a tiny bump in the landscape or a fence that clearly ANY able-bodied person should be able to easily get over. It makes the invisible walls super obvious to me.

Plus it makes me feel like I'm going faster, whether or not that's actually true.

There are tactical considerations with terrain which most games don't cover. The quickest path between 2 points is a straight line. Lets say I have a series of low walls and archers. A party of tanks would probably have to go around and get peppered with arrows, a party of rogues could rush the archers by vaulting the walls. A lightly armored person could jump up a small incline, a heavily armored one might have to climb, which would be slower. Little things like this can add differentiation to classes (beyond just "Hey! I can lockpick!")

I doubt you can jump freely unless they make the companions AI more intelligent. Otherwise the companions will just get lost trying to keep up with the player. Skyrim's companions gets lost every time. I guess they could make the companions teleport to you if they're too far away and you're not directly looking at them but that might break immersion.

Also it'd be annoying if the player makes his jump while the rest jumped to their death.

And if while taking the longer route to catch up to the player, the companions met a group of enemies and dies. That's pretty annoying as well.

There will be so many complaints about stupid companion AI.

Reading that the characters will be able to jump made me nervous.

If its one thing I hate more than anything in games, its jump puzzles. Even when I complete them without dying umpteen times, I just don't get any enjoyment out of it.

I would sacrifice the Inquisitor's LI to a demon if it meant avoiding a jump puzzle.

I'd take well a executed jump puzzle over a poorly executed push block puzzle that leaves you wondering why it was in the game to begin with
