I hope Inquisition gives us some nice non-traditional mage clothes, like some gothic black robes resembling Sorceress Edea or a pair of garish glittery golden robes to show off how rich your Inquisitor is (because it IS Orlais after all).

Mages should just wear leather. Until the DAU proves to me that long, flowing robes are necessary for magic, I'm going to despise it in all it's forms.

Leather fatigues you. It's heavy. You also usually wear padding underneath.

Robes do not.

But why not just wear long pants? Are you going to tell me that seams are too heavy as well?

I think mages will end up getting pants if this game really has mounts. Just makes it easier to ride horses when everyone wears pants.

Horses? Surely they will be fabulous horses that will change color depending on the mood I'm in, I mean it is Orlais after all  B)  ;)

I'd like a variety in mage fashion choices.  Something simple for both sexes, a robe with pants and some kind of shirt, something rather exotic, and some different styles for my male and female mages,   I remember a beautiful robe Moonwing made "Wings of Velvet" for DA:O, that style I'd love to see.

That is, of course, assuming that our robed mages won't  be riding sidesaddle. *snrk*

In all seriousness, I'm hoping for stylish practicality this time around. Just because I'd like my mage Inquisitor to be well-protected doesn't mean I want her to look drab, after all; no more than my love of more realistic armor means I want all the armors in the game to be dreary, generic, medieval fare.

Tunic-like robes combined with pants, perhaps incorporating armor beneath or within their design, would seem the right way to go in my opinion. Drawing from Morrigan's exemplary court costume in terms of flexibility merged with Orlesian fashion is our best bet.

All I want to know is how my Qunari mage will be wearing the Orlesian equivalent of the dumb Dragon Age mage hat.

In triplicate, of course. Two hats for the horns and one for the head!

Now that one was funny :)

I give you that.

As for robes, I like and dislike those in equal measures.

Why?

- because mostly they are too long (who wants to trip over his or her own clothes in battle or while walking longer distances (maybe even in caves, in the mountains in the woods etc.) even more if those long things can get caught up somewhere (rocks, bushes, trees etc.))

- they don't include any protection for the caster (at least that's the case very often), not even leather or some light chain-mail in vital areas (in a time where knives, daggers and swords are common and people might kill you just because you look rich (nobles of that time do not travels with a guard - even inside a city's walls - because it's fun, it is a necessity!)...)

- they often look really stupid

on the other hand, robes are the classic garment of magic-users (who came up with that? - well I do not know) and rather iconic and they can look really really good and are practical (for example you can wear other attire beneath them such as armor)

so, I am split on what you say...

as for fashion-statement robes:

if they look as "fashionable" as Viviennes (or worse: that attire from MOTA) then:

Sorry, I pass on them -.- (while her attire is quite ok for a masquerade-ball, it is nothing for a fight!)

greetings LAX
ps: I would like something like those Tevinter-Robes from DA:O but less posh for the battlefield IMO, because something practical (if the quality is high) mostly looks good, too!

For adventuring away from the cities, I want practical and simple clothing. After all, you don't go wandering around in your most expensive outfit where you'll likely to get blood, gore and mud on it at every turn. Unless you're Vivienne I guess, but I may have to remind her that the servants who usually clean her outfits are not part of the team, and nobody is likely to assume their role.

For more civilized environments, I want exotic and practical. I want to look impressive, both for myself and others, but I still need to move fast occasionally and I don't want to stumble over the hem of my own robe, that's just insulting.

As for the mages' headgear fashion (if you want to insult the term by applying it here): If things are anything like in DA2, I'll keep the headgear switched off (I desperately hope we'll have that option). In DAO, only most mage headgear was ugly (the rest was bland), in DA2, all of it was ugly (not that the stuff for the other classes was any better). This area of Thedas "fashion" is in serious need of improvement.

As somebody with practical experience of them - they're not the handiest clothing when you have to go to the toilet. Just sayin'  ^_^ .

I was thinking of something like a thawb.  Given how popular they are in Arabia, I suspect they're not that bad.

I despise mages wearing any set of medium or heavy armor (unless they are a very specific specialization). When I think mages, I think of Warhammer Fantasy Wizards - any pieces of metal and heavy clothing interfere with your ability to channel magic. So, my mage is gonna be a pretty glass cannon, no pieces of metal pls. Metal is for stupid warriors that like to swing swords and axes.

As for fasion sense - something along the lines of a waistcoat? A tunic perhaps? Just some pants and then something of a long, flowing coat to create the sense of a robe, but still remain practical. And please, no funny and ridiculous mage hats.... I don't spend 30 minutes choosing the perfect hairstyle for my fabulous elf just to have her wear a ridiculous mage hat....

I love Vivienne's robes and I truly hope we get something that's as nice as they are, instead of pajamas.

I'd like a nice middle ground between what we've seen of Vivienne's attire and Solas'.

I disagree with you - even the lore of DA does support me here (!):

mage staffs (and some of the robes in the games) have metal pieces (some of the staffs are metal or dragon-bone (which is akin to metal it seems)) and thus it does not really hinder a mage (well: full armor might, because you have to be used to wearing it and moving in it, that can't be learned on the fly as far as I know, but not lighter pieces or partial armor)

greetings LAX

ps: Viviennes clothes are not stylish - at least not really. They might not look really ugly, but they are impractical as hell (and with her signature look everything you put on her will probably look this way....) and this makes me dislike the character (and it makes her look rather foolish - going into the fight and handicapping yourself with stupid clothes does not make you look very bright)

Partial metal parts are fine, as long as the mage robes/tunic/whatever remain largely a cloth item. As I said, I only referenced how Warhammer dealt with the issue. Obviously Dragon Age is a different universe, but I still like the fantasy of squishy spellcasters, otherwise we all need to get medium and heavy armor
