Throw me into the Gaspard supporters category, far more trustworthy than Celine, far more honorable, and, in my opinion, all around better. I like his dedication to honor, I like the order he represents (I've actually never been fond of Orleis but the Chevaliers are interesting) and I love the way he constantly outwits Celine, a so called 'master of the game' I'm putting him on the throne for sure.
Gaspard is basically Stannis Baratheon with a sense of humor.

Like a villain from kung fu movies?
Gaspard is basically Stannis Baratheon with a sense of humor.
Isn't Celene the rightful ruler of Orlais, though?
If we were to use D&D's alignment system, Stannis is Lawful Neutral with an added emphasis on the Lawful portion. Stannis wants the Iron Throne not because he desires power or privelege. He desires it because he is Robert's lawful heir and the rightful king. For Stannis, claiming the throne is his duty. If the Starks had been sitting on the Iron Throne instead of the Baratheons, he would have sworn fealty to Robb after Ned's death.
If Celene is the rightful ruler of Orlais, Stannis would be more likely to side with her against Gaspard.

I think Gaspard is a mix between Tywin Lannister and Ned Stark.
So Tywin minus male pattern baldness?

Ha! I like. Though, as an aside, Stannis does have a sense of humor, and a fantastic one at that.
Where Stannis would stand on the civil war in Orlais is an interesting question, but it depends on who truly is the rightful ruler. If I recall correctly according to World of Thedas isn't Grand Duke only a title one could get if you were once in line for the throne but things changed? And doesn't Gaspard have some claim to the old dynasty that was overthrown and had Celene put in place? Or am I completely wrong here? (Which is possible, I'm not a huge fan of Orlais)
Thank you. =) I thought the same, but I didn't want to argue with people, but yeah there's no way Celene is the rightful queen. She Killed Florian the emperor, and won over her competitors, that's it. And during 20 years, she ruled the empire, but people contested her power.
Also, for me, Gaspard doesn't look like Stannis.
Depending on if he appears in DAI, it would be good if we could approach him with the choice of ally or enemy. Speaking of that, I have sudden urge to lead the Inquisition to dethrone Celene l.
As for Gaspard, I wouldn't call myself a fan but I definitely see merits. Especially if one dislikes the Game: Gaspard is certainly a capable player, but he's also indicated he's willing to rise above it and not let himself be dominated by it. More so than Celene, at least. Between the two of them, while Celene might be more inclined to reform the society, I suspect Gaspard is more likely to reign in the Game. Orlais could stand to benefit from more honor than Celene has demonstrated.
His expansionist tendencies? Not so much, though how much 'I' care about would depend on the Inquisitor or character in question. My King Couseland would definitely oppose. My Hawke wouldn't care. My Inquisitor would depend on which Inquisitor.
I do agree with TK that the a Gaspard-Celene alliance would have been for the best.
I'm a little unclear on where Gaspard rose above the game and was more honourable than Celene? To me it seemed like he was willing to be dishonourable if he found a convenient way to do so.
I'll more than likely side with Celene, but for those of you planning on supporting Gaspard, make sure he's wearing his family colours when you make deals with him. ![]()
I came across some RP site a while back regarding Grand Duke Gaspard while trying to find info out about him A while bck. So Now I always picture him looking like Jonathan Rhys Meyers from The Tudors as King Henry VIII

It's not that he rose above the game, he simply sidestepped it by forcing Celene out into the open where he could use his strength as a military commander to full advantage.

Interesting. I imagined him with a heavier build and more facial hair.

I was referring to the points where he let honor rule over political expedience by accepting losses and not exploiting openings in the name of that honor. If Gaspard played the game as much as he could have, Celene would already be dead.

That's not sidestepping it though. He used the play in Val Royeaux to force her hand. Chevaliers seem to be loyal to their Lords (and their whims) so I don't think using military might is outside the realm of the game. He wasn't testing his full might against hers. She had a token force.
I totally forgot that about Gaspard, his anti-game stance.
Likewise, I despise the Game, so if Gaspard is going to get rid of it, he has my support 100%

Try to get rid of it you mean, Emperor Kordillus Drakon tried as well and he couldn't. Gaspard is certainly no Drakon.

I saw your username in the "last by" heading, and I am deeply offended by the fact that your comment was not "Hodor"In fact, I think Kordillus Drakon actually made the game worse than it was. Gaspard ain't got no chance.

I wonder if players will get to duel him with feathers?
