I always had Tali figured as an Engineer. But if you talk with Admiral Mikhailovich and Ashley, both of them express suspicions about the Turian and the Krogan but never mention the Quarian. Do you suppose Tali moves through the ship cloaked so no one notices her?

Tail is most certainly an Engineer.

She's a figment of Shepard's imagination.

Shepard has a (perhaps latent) fetish for breather masks and chicken feet.

The other possibility is Tali is a latent biotic with Dominate powers that make people forget ever seeing her.

You might be putting too much thought into this.

Shepard imagined those dialogues involving Tali, but the crew are too understanding to point out the nonexistence of the imaginary character of "Tali". They all know the Commander's been through a lot. One imaginary friend is hardly a severe symptom of PTSD. Only in ME3 did Shepard's PTSD become massively effective.

because Quarians are beneath humans. They're really of no concern.

Because she hides from the talimancers.

Everyone loves Quarians, so no one is worried about her. Warmongering Turians and raging Krogan on the other hand...

That joke has a lot of truth to it though, she's one of the only crew members with no enemies. She's best buddies with Garrus, Kaidan, Ash, Kasumi, Joker, EDI, Liara, Traynor and even Javik. She's a latent socialite.

She actually is.

Out of the Quarians, she's probably one of the most social. (EDIT: with other species, post Rannoch War)

A lot of characters are both good examples of the species, but also a certain kind of 'outlier'. Tali actively communicates with non-Quarians. Wrex tries to see a hope for the Krogan. Garrus wants to bend or break the rules. Liara (for the most part) actually doesn't mind being alone and doing her own thing. This continues into ME2.

Tali's an Engineer. The Infiltrator is Garrus :P

Wrex: Vanguard.

Liara: Adept.

Ashley: Soldier.

Kaidan: Sentinel.

By the end of ME3 (my PERSONAL assessment):

Kaidan - Sentinel (Biotic/Tech toned)

Ashley - Soldier (Combat/Tech toned)

Liara - Adept (Biotic/Combat toned)

Wrex - Vanguard (Combat/Biotic toned)

Garrus - Infiltrator (Combat/Tech toned)

Tali - Engineer (Tech/Combat toned)

(gets more tricky with many ME2 characters, as Bioware went more with hybridization)

Miranda - Sentinel (Biotic/Tech toned)

Jacob - Vanguard (Combat/Biotic toned)

Mordin - Engineer (Tech/Combat toned)

Jack - Vanguard (Biotic/Combat toned)

Grunt - Soldier (Combat toned)

Samara/Morinth - Adept (Biotic/Combat toned)

Thane - Infiltrator (Biotic/Combat toned)

Legion - Infiltrator (Tech/Combat toned)

Zaeed - Soldier (Combat/Tech toned)

Kasumi  - Infiltrator (Tech/Combat toned)

(a little tricky with ME3 characters)

James - Soldier (Combat/Tech toned)

EDI - Engineer (Tech toned) (this one is especially hard, as she has a strong 'infiltration' aspect, but I regard her an Engineer at heart)

Javik - Vanguard (Biotic/Combat toned)

~~~
What may qualify as Combat toned? Weapons beyond pistols/sub-machine guns. Combat abilities that are not elemental or highly technical. Greater focus on weapon, armor stats. Being offensive focused (which is just enough for Mordin, for example).
AKA gun powers and weapons.
What may qualify as Biotic toned? Biotic abilities. Greater focus on powers cooldowns. Being more defensive focused.
AKA biotic powers and manipulations.
What may qualify as Tech toned? Tech abilities. Greater focus on powers improvements. Being more utility focused.
AKA technical powers and elements.
IMO you see Combat above all, because this is Shepard's Story and his is simply more Combat oriented than what we may hypothetically see in future games. We were the soldier, and we needed a good team to at least affirm that.
It is my prediction, or at least hope, that the next game(s) will shift things more to the Biotic side. Still plenty of Combat, but not as necessary as before. Less War for Survival, more Tactical Operations :). And at some point after that, I hope we get a Tech focus (2-4 games from now).
All of this is a long-ass way of saying that yes, Tali is an Engineer, not an Infiltrator.
I know this is kinda a joke thread, but I felt like taking it seriously :)
She's got no Biotics to her, she has no Stealth or Long-Range to her (more a combo of Short and Medium range), she has a Shotgun and Offensively Synthetic Tech oriented attacks. She is all about the actual Tech powers.
That makes her a distinct Engineer, but with a bit of Infiltrator/Soldier tone to some parts of her :). Not enough to call her either, though. But yeah, she does lean towards the Combat sometimes.
This was fun!
I'm glad at least a few folk recognized this as a joke thread. (Actually, playing the the Female Quarian Infiltrator in MP, then doing some more ME1 is what brought this to mind. I named my FQI Tali Nosee'um.)
I would take issue with labeling Thane an Infiltrator. He is clearly an Adept. At least the Asari Huntress, the only Infiltrator with biotic powers, has tactical cloak. And the only reason to think of EDI as a possible infiltrator is because she is the model for the Alliance Infiltration Unit, which has a different power set than EDI. I see EDI as the ME3 replacement for Mordin, another Engineer.
Thane is an Adept if we only keep into account his powers.
His Sniper Rifle focus and Shredder Ammo imply Soldier or Infiltrator. His story also seems more geared towards an Infiltrator imo.
He is pretty much the most hybrid character though, overall (I'm talking STORY + GAMEPLAY).
So yeah, one could call him an Infiltrational Adept :P
Or a Biotic Infiltrator :P
Or a sniping Vanguard? 0_0
Whatever works. He defies labels!!
~~~

AIU is Infiltrator outright. EDI is the taking over of a AIU/EVA, and 'making it her own'.

She may have a strong Infiltrator edge, but I consider EDI more of an Engineer overall. At least by the trilogy standards. I have my own opinion on where the series will be going, and how we'll view all the current henchmen in retrospect :) (They're almost all about Combat, compared to what we'll see next)

Sniper rifles are sooo yesterday for infiltrators. Shotguns are all the rage these days. That was especially enshrined in the AIU.

lol

Infiltrator seems to really come down to 'Using Tech in combination with Gunz'. Not necessarily sniper rifles, but beyond the basic types. So yeah, I can see Thane as a hybrid Adept - I just don't 'feel' he is.
