Why is Cullen so special?

Could someone please explain to me why people are so head over heels in love with Cullen?  If we review his essentially minor role so far we have

1.  He's a templar.  Now, depending on where you stand on the mage/templar debate this could be good or bad, but its certainly not unique.  We don't see people squeeing over Greagoir or Thrask for example.

2. in DAO, he got cought by some demons and tortured, and so he wanted to massacre every mage in the tower.  He may also have at least short term PTSD from this.  Again, there are no shortage of traumatized people in the Thedas, lets face it, its a rough world.  However, even when you combine that with him being a templar, its still not even unique, let alone special or sqeeworthy.  Again, no one seems to give a flying hippopotomeaus about Keran or Rexel, both templars who were traumatized.

3.  In DAII he has four appearances.  First, a minor role where he investigates dissapearing templar recruits before showing a staggering level of incompetance/apathy and elaving it up to Hawke to do most of the work.  Second, he shows up after you kill Grace and helps clean up the bodies I guess.  Third, he makes a face about Aveline showing favoratism in the guard based on rumors he knows are false, apparently deciding that to ignore the fact that anyone in power generates negative rumors and that the best policy is to ignore them, so he can cause trouble for Hawke and Aveline, both of whom are very busy keeping a lid on the city.  Its like bringing the FBI in to investigate every time somebody says Obama is actually a member of Al Qaeda.  Regardless of weather or not you support him, you can tell such rumors are hogwash and you shouldn't waste his or the FBI's time clearing them up.  Lastly, after the teh battle with orsino, he tells Meredith she's out of line and should stand down.  Ok Bravo, good for you, you did what was clearly necessary and that you should have done 6 years ago.  Something that any templar, or any person shoud have done such as a trio of ferelden refugees, a dwarven merchant, a priest, an elven fugitve, and stranded pirate, and an elf with intellect of a four-year-old.  This band of misfits stould up to her years ago.  You, who were far more qualified, far more able, and who in fact had a duty to do so, waited until now.  Good for you?

So what am I missing?  Given the huge adoration for him, there's obviously something I'm not seeing?  What is it?  help mne out please.

TL;DR, I don't see what makes Cullen special, please explain.

Please note that this thread is 85% serious, and only 15% trolling, I would actually appreciate some serious answers.

Thanks,

Brighwolf

To behead him at first meeting is very appealing to me.  So I am hoping Bioware allows this.

I've wondered this myself. I think it kind of started with people playing as mages and he is all flummoxed by your female mage. That's sort of fun. Then even though he's a jerk when he's trapped at the circle, he admits his crush on you. Then people made little romance mods with him. Not long ones but a bit more involved. Sort of centered around him being in love with the mage or having a soft spot for her. I think he says that it was the quickest harrowing he'd ever seen and people got a kick out of that. It's what the mages are saying when you are in the quarters after the harrowing when you wake up to Jowan annoying you. So it's kind of this whole little thing that people decided to play up. The mages imply they know he has a thing for her. That's sort of fun. You have to play as a female though. That's the key.

By the second game if you side with the templars he's pretty cool. If you side with the mages, he doesn't totally go against you. At least not by the end of the battle. Though honestly after the second game I did side with the templars because I felt there were too many mages turning to blood magic and merideth pushed them too far so there was really no way out. I did both sides and both sides suck. Mages turn. The first enchanter goes nuts. Then meredeth is bonkers with that lyrium idol. Really, the whole thing no matter what side you choose is just a disaster. Neither really looks good in the end but it is all meredith's fault. However, the thing about cullen in the second game that makes him a winner is that if you side with the templars, he clearly has his limits. He says that things were worse in Ferelden and that was the sort of situation where he could see annulment (I don't think he acknowledges whether or not you chose it) but that here it is nowhere near that bad. And this gives you more insight into him. He's become more balanced since the last game but he was traumatized in the last and with good reason. Here, he will stand up to meredeth when you side with templars because he sees she's gone to far. If you side with mages I don't think you get that dialogue. Or maybe you do. I can't remember. But he actually does stand up for the mages and against her at some point. That made me like him a lot more. And it kind of made me think back to why he was so hateful in game one.... he went through hell and watched massive deaths thanks to mages.

He's also balanced enough to listen to what hawke offers about that young templar. He's more like Gregor in that moment. I kind of liked gregor at the end of the circle run.

Again, this has more to do with the little illicit crush he had on the female mage character in game one and how much people got into it, which was quite a lot given some of the mods I've seen. Game two it seems they played to that by giving him more balance so he wasn't as much of an overt mage hater as he seemed in the first by the time you see him after outside the harrowing chamber.

He's handsome, tortured, and Greg Ellis has a nice voice. He doesn't need much else to put hearts in people's eyes.

This is kinda like asking me why I like to drink straight pickle juice. I just do!

I dunno, I just like him. I think his story progression is neat, and I'd like to see where he'd go if he had a more important role in shaping the story of a game. That's about it.

This thread has opened a can of worms.

Short answer, he's seen and experienced the worst both sides (mages and templars) have to offer, has a good voice actor, and there's the squee factor if you played a female mage.

That's essentially the long and short of it.

Well, well, I haven't seen one of these in awhile. OP if you're really curious, you should check the Cullen fan threads, your curiosity will be sated I assure you.Since this is nothing more than a thinlly veiled hate thread, I foresee a lockdown in the immediate future.

If Cullen is a member of the templars, he may be an antagonist if the protagonist supports the mages, since the developers said that the player is the "deciding factor" in the conflict between mages and templars.

I certainly don't understand it.  He looks too similar to Alistar and Anders (blonde and brown eyed) and his personality and character never stood out to me.  I don't think he's interesting enough to be a companion (kinda like Jacob in ME).

However, I'm sure Bioware will improve upon this in Inquisition so I'm just going to wait and see.  Plus, the women that like him are happy, so.

This is kind of like with Garrus and Tali for me. I never understood their mass appeal and I thought the two human companions and Wrex were a lot more interesting in ME1. Then ME2 rolled around and it seemed like BW amped up Tali and Garrus because of fan adoration (even adding them as LI's) and I ended up loving both of them. I don't really get the Cullen thing right now, he was cute in the mage origin of DA:O, he was ok in DA2, maybe as a companion we will learn a lot more about him and he will be really cool and interesting.

Cullen holds no appeal to me, hes a minor character with minor roles in both games...  it would be like people wanting to romance donnic in da 2...  hes not important get over it, hes not going to be a companion, and hopefully we can kill him off in some way this game

He's actually fairly unique in DA. We have seen him go from All MAGES MUST DIE to Gregoire was right, there is no reason to kill all the mages in the circle just because some are possessed/maleficar.

Its quite a lot of character growth, especially for a DA character.

He has been in both games.

To me his appeal is that he is actually a realistic version of a moderate Andrastian Templar.  Thrask was interesting yes, but not entirely realistic to me in his portrayal.

Maybe, maybe not. One of Cullen's lines in Act 3 that stands out is that he began doubting serving tenants of the templar order and following Meredith were not the same thing anymore. He may be like Evangeline in Asunder and may see himself better serving to protect the world from mages and such by serving in the Inquisition instead of the Red Templars, and would either approve or disapprove of the decisions that we make as the Inquisitor.

People like different characters in the game. If you're really curious I'd suggest going to the Cullen fan thread and asking them. I like Cullen because of his growth between DAO and DA2. He was tortured in origins and by the end of DA2 he stands up to his Commander a woman he admired just to do what he felt was right. I'm interested to see where they take him in DAI.

It may be optional. The Highlands update leaves me with the impression that the player decides where to allocate resources, given how an entire region can be ignored if the player isn't interested in going there.

OMG, that is because like he's SO SO HOT. You should like look at him. That is like totally cute. Squee squee squee.

Seriously, it seems like how people perceive Cullen fans, especially when they keep mentioning his looks, ignoring how his story arc is being developed. He saw the worst of mages and templars, he's a man of principle and despite his trauma, he doesn't just kill mage indiscriminately (san the rumors epilogue in DAO). It shows when you ask for his opinions about killing defenseless mages. He's not afraid to stand up to his commander. Yeah, you can think that I'm putting him in leather pants and ignore whatever flaws he may have, but his flaws are also what makes him interesting and make him appear human instead of a one-dimensional character.

I never really thought of him much until DA2, he looked like maybe his time away from the Ferelden circle paid off since was probably the hottest male NPC I had encountered at that point. But by the end of the game I saw some of Aveline in him, like when he stepped in like a teacher tearing two kindergarteners fighting over an action figure in the sandbox away from each other ("Enough! You will step down now!!"). In the end he just really wanted to uphold order and reason.
