Why is Cullen so special?

Could someone please explain to me why people are so head over heels in love with Cullen?  If we review his essentially minor role so far we have

1.  He's a templar.  Now, depending on where you stand on the mage/templar debate this could be good or bad, but its certainly not unique.  We don't see people squeeing over Greagoir or Thrask for example.

2. in DAO, he got cought by some demons and tortured, and so he wanted to massacre every mage in the tower.  He may also have at least short term PTSD from this.  Again, there are no shortage of traumatized people in the Thedas, lets face it, its a rough world.  However, even when you combine that with him being a templar, its still not even unique, let alone special or sqeeworthy.  Again, no one seems to give a flying hippopotomeaus about Keran or Rexel, both templars who were traumatized.

3.  In DAII he has four appearances.  First, a minor role where he investigates dissapearing templar recruits before showing a staggering level of incompetance/apathy and elaving it up to Hawke to do most of the work.  Second, he shows up after you kill Grace and helps clean up the bodies I guess.  Third, he makes a face about Aveline showing favoratism in the guard based on rumors he knows are false, apparently deciding that to ignore the fact that anyone in power generates negative rumors and that the best policy is to ignore them, so he can cause trouble for Hawke and Aveline, both of whom are very busy keeping a lid on the city.  Its like bringing the FBI in to investigate every time somebody says Obama is actually a member of Al Qaeda.  Regardless of weather or not you support him, you can tell such rumors are hogwash and you shouldn't waste his or the FBI's time clearing them up.  Lastly, after the teh battle with orsino, he tells Meredith she's out of line and should stand down.  Ok Bravo, good for you, you did what was clearly necessary and that you should have done 6 years ago.  Something that any templar, or any person shoud have done such as a trio of ferelden refugees, a dwarven merchant, a priest, an elven fugitve, and stranded pirate, and an elf with intellect of a four-year-old.  This band of misfits stould up to her years ago.  You, who were far more qualified, far more able, and who in fact had a duty to do so, waited until now.  Good for you?

So what am I missing?  Given the huge adoration for him, there's obviously something I'm not seeing?  What is it?  help mne out please.

TL;DR, I don't see what makes Cullen special, please explain.

Please note that this thread is 85% serious, and only 15% trolling, I would actually appreciate some serious answers.

Thanks,

That makes him useful, not interesting. We could get a new templar character, Cassandra underwent templar training.
What makes Cullen worthy of being companion or LI except his enormous fan base? Nothing

What makes any character worthy of being a companion?  David could have written someone different than Alistair.

If this is a thread that evolves into trashing on a character without really knowing how the character exists in the game (something you possibly won't know until release), then this thread will find itself getting closed.

Showing disappointment in a certain companion choice is forbidden on this forum? So much for freedom of speech

First off, freedom of speech doesn't exist on a private company's message board.  I'm not the government and I'm not oppressing you, nor taking away any of your rights, by stating that I'm not interested in seeing this thread evolve into yet another thread of people going "Boo Cullen" in response to there being a group of people that are "Yay Cullen."

What I am addressing, however, is this notion that the only reason why Cullen could even be considered being in the game is because of his large fanbase.  Is it that there simply is no reason whatsoever for Cullen's inclusion, or is that a conception you make based upon incomplete information?

Now yes, people confirmation bias all the time.  They'll think "there's a lot of vocal support for Cullen.  Oh look, Cullen is in the game... well that's obviously because of the fan support."  Of course, there's also things that some people have been asking for for the 2 years I've been active on the boards, constantly, that still aren't going to make the game.  So, to me, it seems like there's possibly a bit more than "fans really want him in the game" for his inclusion.

You're right in that we could have created a different character instead of Cullen.  But the same could be said about any character in any of the games.

But what can Cullen tell us for the lore expanding purpose? What is so unique about Cullen that makes him important? There is a plenty of sane and good willed templars.

What's so unique about any character?  I think it's the ways that the writing team utilizes a character.  Lets assume his name isn't Cullen.  Is he still a boring and uninteresting character, as shown in DAI?  If it was announced that there was a Templar named Alexander and he was a love interest then what would make him such an important character?

It's fine to not be thrilled because so far you haven't really enjoyed what you've seen of Cullen in previous games.  But if the character would be interesting to you if his name wasn't Cullen, then I'd postulate that it'd be a symmetric relation and the character would still be interesting if it was Cullen.
