So what am I missing? Given the huge adoration for him, there's obviously something I'm not seeing?
Probably this.
Fangirls love that sort of thing, it isn't so much the character himself but the desire to be adored and worshiped by cute boys, why do you think the "swaying hips" banter between Wynne and Alistair is so popular?

I read the comics and i don't remember him saying he was taking lyrium, i remember him saying that he was practicing again.
It has been confirmed that Templars have to take Lyrium to have their powers. Alistair was either wrong or too addled on Lyrium in DAO.
He was kind of flirty with the mage Warden in DA:O, and girls (and apparently some guys) liked his voice and thought the character was handsome.
And thats all it is really. All the stuff about how interesting a character he is, you can disregard. If he looked like the Architect no one would be talking about him.
To be fair I'm not picking on Cullen fans here. I think thats true for fans of most romanceable characters. Ask them while they like a character and they start rattling off a number reasons except for the primary one...that they just thought the character was attractive.

ah I wish they would make up their minds or at least with Alistair on if he needs it or not, in the comic he said "I used to be a templar, fighting mages is what we do. after the tellari swamps, i thought i'd get back in practice." thats it, unless he said lyrium in the last comic...was the only one i wasnt able to buy
I hate it when you hear one thing and hear another. it gets confusing!!!!
Because people suck ass and don't want new characters. Cullen is the worst. Absolute worst.

I would start with saying that Cassandra is attractive actually. I have no shame in admitting that ![]()

Umm considering I never really bother with the romances, I can assure you it has nothing to do with physical appearance. I just think he is a well written and believable character.
Would be nice to have option to kill Cullen,i will choose it and record it and then upload to YouTuBe,simply to annoy all his fans. ![]()

- He has nice noodle hair.
lmfao.
Never understood all the hype about Cullen.
To be honest.. Cullen is one of most understable characters I like in DA. I mean Architect is one of my fav characters in DA universe and I'm pretty much alone with my love for him ^^
"...I like the idea that he has confronted probably the worst that the mages have, he's encountered the worst of what mages can do. Yet he hasn't done what some Templars have done, like Meredith, how they have reacted is to become very anti-mage and very judgemental and to paint all the mages in the same basic plot, a few bad apples spoils the bunch. Cullen to me represents another side of Templars which is a side that we need to keep active. Not all Templars are these heartless bastards who would happily torture mages, that's not true, there are Templars who are good people. I think Cullen is a good man who recognizes that there are dangerous in magic, dangers that have to be dealt with, but he doesn't lack for compassion and doesn't try to say "Well, let's take the hard approach and kill everybody and let the Maker sort them out." At the end of DA2 he's the person who sort of tries to put on the brakes, the voice of sanity if you will. I think that's important to represent, so in that respect I like the idea of Cullen reappearing, I like that element of his character..." DG
I love the characters well written (Morrigan, Alistair, Varric...).
Iron Bull, Vivienne, Cullen, Sora ... give them a chance, well written will be my favorite characters.

That would be nice, actually, 'cause then we wouldn't have to do it ourselves!
Well, some of us wouldn't do it.
SCIENCE!
Wow. It never ceases to amaze how his detractors make more threads about the guy then his fans actually do. Regardless, we got our romance, so at the end of the day, we still win.
And if he's an important advisor NPC, I'd bet good gold that we can't kill him until late-game. ![]()
The main reason I like Cullen is because of Greg Ellis. I am not a crazy Cullen zealot, Cullenite, or whatever you call his diehard fans. It's entirely possible to like somebody without going overboard.
Kind of funny how there are people saying they want to kill off Cullen before the game is even out. This is Nathaniel Howe all over again because BSNers were adamant on killing him without knowing his entire backstory. Then after the game came out people here were swooning and falling in love with him.

I gave Nathaniel a chance when I played through Awakening just to see what he was like however if I were for some reason to play through Awakening again I would probably send him to the gallows.

He's adventuring with Varric and Isabella trying to find his father Maric, who was lost at sea as far as anyone knows.
He meets a possible sister of Morrigan's as well.
Good to know he abandoned my warden's side in search of his dad.
Could someone please explain to me why people are so head over heels in love with Cullen? If we review his essentially minor role so far we have
1. He's a templar. Now, depending on where you stand on the mage/templar debate this could be good or bad, but its certainly not unique. We don't see people squeeing over Greagoir or Thrask for example.
2. in DAO, he got cought by some demons and tortured, and so he wanted to massacre every mage in the tower. He may also have at least short term PTSD from this. Again, there are no shortage of traumatized people in the Thedas, lets face it, its a rough world. However, even when you combine that with him being a templar, its still not even unique, let alone special or sqeeworthy. Again, no one seems to give a flying hippopotomeaus about Keran or Rexel, both templars who were traumatized.
3. In DAII he has four appearances. First, a minor role where he investigates dissapearing templar recruits before showing a staggering level of incompetance/apathy and elaving it up to Hawke to do most of the work. Second, he shows up after you kill Grace and helps clean up the bodies I guess. Third, he makes a face about Aveline showing favoratism in the guard based on rumors he knows are false, apparently deciding that to ignore the fact that anyone in power generates negative rumors and that the best policy is to ignore them, so he can cause trouble for Hawke and Aveline, both of whom are very busy keeping a lid on the city. Its like bringing the FBI in to investigate every time somebody says Obama is actually a member of Al Qaeda. Regardless of weather or not you support him, you can tell such rumors are hogwash and you shouldn't waste his or the FBI's time clearing them up. Lastly, after the teh battle with orsino, he tells Meredith she's out of line and should stand down. Ok Bravo, good for you, you did what was clearly necessary and that you should have done 6 years ago. Something that any templar, or any person shoud have done such as a trio of ferelden refugees, a dwarven merchant, a priest, an elven fugitve, and stranded pirate, and an elf with intellect of a four-year-old. This band of misfits stould up to her years ago. You, who were far more qualified, far more able, and who in fact had a duty to do so, waited until now. Good for you?
So what am I missing? Given the huge adoration for him, there's obviously something I'm not seeing? What is it? help mne out please.
TL;DR, I don't see what makes Cullen special, please explain.
Please note that this thread is 85% serious, and only 15% trolling, I would actually appreciate some serious answers.
Thanks,
Brighwolf
Why do people like Morrigan?
Why do people like Alistar?
Why do people like Zevran?
Why do people like Leliana?
Why do people like Dog?
Why do people like Loghain?
Why do people like Sten?
Just because you don't see anything about a character that is worth liking doesn't mean others have to feel the same. But I'll attempt to explain my own attraction to the character based on your points.
1. Greagoir or Thrask are ugly and Cullen isn't. duh! ![]()
2. Keran or Rexel, both templars who were traumatized. Yes they were but neither showed the same mental fortitude Cullen has shown. He resisted the temptation of demons when all the other Templars had fallen victim and he managed to pull himself together. He didn't become some drooling mess in the corner. as for Keran, he came out of it okay, but then turned around and aided a bunch of blood mages. I don't agree with Cullen turning to extremist anti mage thinking but I also don't support extremist pro mage thinking to the point of stupidity.
3. In DAII he has four appearances. it wouldn't be the first time fans have latched on to a character who only had minor appearances. Aria T'Lok, Shiala, the cop lady investigating that asari shop keeper.
Did I mention already that he is hot?!

Should I mention it again? ![]()
Anyway, the one thing that attracts fans to Cullen the most was his first appearance in DAO. At least it did for me. I think Bioware attempted to add this one sided infatuation thing between Cullen and the FWarden and probably didn't count on players wanting their warden returning those feelings. Then when you think of the LIs a straight female warden is stuck with in the game. Alistair who crack jokes about EVERYTHING (not a bad thing but I can understand some fans not liking it), "I'll sleep with anything that isn't nailed down" Zevran, or go gay for Leliana...it's no wonder some fans couldn't stop thinking about what could have been with the shy sexy Templar.
Good to know he abandoned my warden's side in search of his dad.
Actually--your Warden disappeared ie left him.
These "Why do people like Cullen" threads reminds me of those guys who make a big show of condemning the gays and then go have rough sex in men's bathrooms.
Y'know, OP, if you like the character, you don't have to hide behind this sneering facade of condescension. It's OK. No one is judging you.
Cullen farts rainbow and turns into a unicorn every full moon.
Do that and you will have your own horde of fans.
I think part of the reason why Cullen is "so special" is because people, whether they like him or not, keep creating threads about him, which makes it seem as if he is always being discussed. Add to that the fact that "Cullen haters" feel the need to throw barbs at his fans and it creates this ongoing discussion where there wasn't one.
If there was a single "Cullen Discussion Thread", no one would be noticing him as much. I rarely see too much Cullen discussion outside of threads where it is relevant, such as "romance" and "companion" and "NPC role" threads, to be honest.
