Maybe it will depend on the dificultly level .  I hate the idea of no health regen :(

Yeah I find it odd, especially considering mana will fully regenerate as before. I'm not sure what the point is - I guess to make it more of a challenge?

Hopefully :) I'd really hate to have to choose between 2 things I really wanted.

I very much hope that we won't need that one tank.  Like with DAO, where tanks were entirely unnecessary.  Given the crowd control abilities of mages, it wasn't necessary in DAO to take damage at all, let alone concentrate that damage on a single character.

If I need a tank, I will be disappointed.

There was no need for a tank in DA:O or DA2, though certain boss battles were very hard without a tank because you were forced into an arena and forced to deal with enemy swarms. But I absolutely destroyed enemies in DA2 with Varic + 3 mages. If DAI uses a similar build for damages - i.e., powerful crowd control spells  - like DA:O and DA2 used I can't see a tank being relevant on any difficulty.

I will be sure to test that, particularly at lower levels.

Great, rolling.  That's always a fun mechanic.  I wonder if by optional they mean I can play a version of the game that isn't balanced around it.

To the tanking discussion:  Yeah, I never use taunt in either game.  1. It makes combat way too easy, and 2.  I enjoy the character building more if I have to make somewhat offensively/defensively balanced characters.

Could it just be an excessively long cooldown?

-They're using tactics similar to what we're used to from MMORPGs, meaning that a tank will soak up enemy damage while the Damage Dealer... deals damage and the healer supports us with healing spells. Also, the role of support classes was given a bit more emphasis than before.

This is something I really, really, really hate about Dragon Age because it puts emphasis on bringing companions based on their class rather than their personality so you can have the right group build. If every class had the ability to tank and heal it would be okay, but alas.

Hmm yeah possibly. Man that's going to be annoying.

Ya for instance I found Wynne really boring (particularly after the first playthrough) but irritatingly I always had to have her along for her healing. So I missed out on banter and stuff from other companion combinations.

Agreed.  I never annulled the circle because I didn't want to lose the only healer.  Now I have a mod that solves the problem (I turn Morrigan into a healer) and I feel a lot more freedom in the game because of it.

You can play DAO and DA2 without healing. You just need to lay a fast smackdown on the enemies.

The trick is the force mage specialization. It allows you to control the environment (slowing down enemies, pulling them together or breaking them apart, even trapping them in the centre of a gravity well). That has to be combined with spells like firestorm, etc. to create cones of killing. While you throw the enemies together. Then you can use cold spells to create a brittle effect and burst arrow for the finishing blow.

I'm puzzled by the same thing. I do understand the devs point of view of wanting the players to make choices of whetever or not engage, but at the moment it seems to sliding more and more on the forced for no reason approach. It is impossible to say without playing the game and seeing how they solved it, but this is one of the game play features that is making me truly nervous at the moment.

I suspect the trick in DA2 was the cross-class combo.  I never used them, partly because I thought combat moved too quickly to set them up, and partly because I dislike choosing abilities that have restrictions or dependencies.  I never used Spirit Healer or Blood Mage in DA2 because of those restrictions, and I didn't ugrade any abilities to enable CCC because of those dependencies.

Yep. Can't hurt you if they're dead.

How odd, I can't imagine not using Cross Class Combos. They are super effective. My Sword and Shield warrior loved AoE disorient. It allowed me to one shot groups of trash minions.

Combat does move too quickly in DA2 unless you use the magic pause button. Apparently, all Hawkes regardless of class are time mages.

Now I'm feeling positively ancient because I associate the terms tank, healer and damage dealer to table-top RPGs (which are multi-player/co-operative) and I have played them for over 30 years. In terms of PC games, it's almost 20 year's since I first played Baldur's Gate, where a balanced party was essential and it was certainly best played as a single person RPG, although there is a multi-player option.

I've just realised that my gaming career is older that some of the members on this forum. I'd better take my vitamins and go for a lay down.

I wouldn't know. I don't think I've ever seen one.

-When you pause the game, placing the cursor on enemy units will tell you their level, health and class.

This is great news. It wasn't always easy to quickly notice who and where the mages were in DA2 (I don't sit super-close to the TV and the names of the enemies were a bit hard for me to read, because of the font and text color). Now I can pause, switch to top-down view and figure out everything I want to know very fast.

-Party members will be revived after battle, health will only party be restored. Mana will restore completely, but you won't be able to spam healing spells until everybody is ok again, though Bioware didn't mention how that will work out.

It makes sense that we can't just heal everybody with a spell if mana restores completely and fallen companions don't fully regenerate health after a battle. It'll definitely be interesting to see how BioWare will handle the mechanics. Maybe casting healing spells will drain some of the caster's health? Or perhaps a mage can only cast a couple of healing spells per day / before having to rest again? Can't wait to find out.

I was wondering how we were going to be able to tell if a fight was too high level for us. I'm glad we'll be able to see enemies' level when paused. Super relieved about that.

I sympathise for the poor artist who had to render every pebble.  :P

Mud slowing the group down sounds like it could be annoying.  I'm slightly skeptical on the base building feature.  Most games don't integrate that sort of thing very well.

Not everybody. I remember playing Temple of Apshai. One of the first things that called itself a graphical CRPG. (I'm not counting the text adventures like Colossal Cave, or Zork. Or the ASCII-graphics games like Rogue).

temple-of-apshai-trilogy_3.gif

Dig those graphics.

Loading the Zork games from floppies - real floppies, anybody remember those? - took a minute and a half. Each time, to play, on my Commodore 64.

And now, if you'll excuse me, I've got some kids to chase off my lawn.
