Going to watch it when it releases in theatres here in Canada. Not expecting much though, TASM was terrible, and I dont think this one will be much better (I mean come on, 3 villians? that went terrible in Spider Man 3).

Best movies were Sam Raimi's trilogy

About half of opening night screenings result in some amount of applause.. Usually the audience is all super-fans

But I wasn't at a opening night screening, the movie has been out more than a week here.

I saw it a few days ago, I liked it and thought it was better than the first one and pretty close to Sam Rami's first 2 movies and would give it about a 7.5 out of ten.

It's really fascinating how much the opinions on this movie differ. Glad you liked it, anyways!  :)

Saw it yesterday and the only good thing I can say about it was the outstanding visual effects and acting on the main cast's part. Other than that it was a convoluted mess with an unfocused narrative that tried too hard to put everything it wanted to tell on the screen.

Kinda what I expected really.

And I went in fully expecting it to be absolute trash given all the critic ratings and how bad the first movie was, but I walked out shocked at how much I loved it.

For the Spider man Movies, here's how I'd rank them:

1. The Amazing Spider-Man 2

2. Spider-Man & Spider-Man 2

3. Spider-Man 3

4. The Amazing Spider-Man

I agree with Chewin. The plot was a mess and lacked focus. Plus, the Peter/Gwen romance could've been shortened' cause it took most of the movie's time.  Imo, Electro wasn't that interesting as a villain, not to mention he didn't appear as much as I expected, given his role. Thus it felt like he was just some nuisance rather than a threat. Honestly, they should've just removed him in the first place and written in the Green Goblin as the main villain since he was one of the few good things in this movie. And perhaps included the Kingpin. For what it's worth, the movie was still pretty good.

You liked Spider-Man 3 more than The Amazing Spider-Man? I though the Amazing Spider-Man was pretty decent, sure it had its faults but I felt it was stronger movie than Sam Raimi's first Spider-Man film. Like most I wanted to hate Amazing Spider-Man on principle because I thought it was to soon to reboot Spider-Man after Sam Raimi's trilogy just ended but it was strong enough wipe all doubts from my mind.

I'm not really sure where I would rank Amazing Spider-Man. In many ways it is superior to the first film but on the other hand a sequel is expected to surpass its predecessor and Amazing Spider-Man 2 doesn't always manage to do full justice to a lot of its ideas and themes, a lot of it hits it's mark and is well executed but there are also quite a few misses in there as well.

I disagree, I absolutely hated the Amazing Spider Man. It was terrible, the Lizard looked ridiculous, the origin story was weak in comparison to Raimi's movie, and Andrew Garfield did a shitty job too (its amazing how much he stepped up his game in this film, its like an entire different actor).

The only disappointment I had with this movie is that I wish there was slightly more of the Green Goblin, but he is going to be in the next movie, so its not entirely disappointing. I still think the movie was excellent

I watched it just last night. It was truly amazing. And intense. I'd put it above the first movie, and I really liked that one too. I definitely think the reboot is way better than the old movies, where Spider-Man had zero charisma and the emotional range of a brick (more often than not, I consider character fail to be all around fail. And there was no character in the original trilogy I thought was worth it). I was left watching in shock during that whole scene near the end, before and after the actual event, even though it didn't really surprise me. I don't even remember the last time a movie actually saddened me.

So, in short, great movie, right up there with The Winter Soldier. By the way, if The Amazing Spider-Man supposedly happens in the same Marvel universe, how is it that it seems so isolated from the rest of it? I'm merely curious.

Can't wait to see Amazing Spider-Man 3 be an even bigger fail, oh well least we have Winter Soldier this year, now that was a good movie. If only the Amazing Spider-Man movies could be even close, or at least close to the first two Rami ones.

I'd just like to point out a couple of things. I never thought the plot was a mess or unfocused because the way I see it (and I think many people here are missing that) the main plot wasn't Peter vs Electro, or Peter and Harry, and certainly not Peter vs Green Goblin (that comes in the next movie, it would seem). It's about Peter and Gwen. So if you think they that took way too much screen time, is because that was the point. Electro and Harry were the secondary plotlines, up until they affected the main story. I also fail to see where the "too many villains" argument comes from. I had the same concern when I watched the trailer, but in the movie itself there was only two of any importance, and one of them only showed up shortly near the end, acting more as a plot device to move the main Peter and Gwen storyline rather than an actual antagonist.

And you just listed why alot of people don't like the movie. People want to see Spider-Man kick ass and for Parker to grow as a person, not see a very shitty done romance plot. This also does not excuse the poor writing either.

The two underlined things are entirely subjective. And I know a lot of people look down on love stories as a main plot or just don't like them. You are certainly entitled to your opinion and preferences, which are as valid as mine. But they don't in any way support the idea that the movie was bad (which is just an opinion) or that the producers are doing it wrong. I've always found the latter attitude kind of strange, how people who had no hand in creating a story seem to be so absolutely sure of what it is supposed to be, and get mad when it doesn't fit a certain expectation.

I can tell you, just to offer and opposing viewpoint, that old Spider-Man kicking ass got old fast for me, because I found him boring as a block and I couldn't care less about who he fought, whether he won or lost, whether he saved the girl or not. It all felt extremely pointless, because the old movies stroke me as all show and no meat. And when it tried to get into the latter, well, it was terrible at it. So I'd take a love story that I actually find engaging over that any day, thanks.

I don't expect anyone to change their mind. Just accept other people liked the movie, for their own reasons, and not because they had terrible taste since the movie was certainly, absolutely, and objectively junk, but because their different people with their own minds and opinions, right? Variety is the spice of life and all that jazz.

On the contray I love well done love stories. Casablanca is one of my fav movies of all time. When you shoehorn love stories that are done very poorly however and then try to act like 'this was totes are main focus" yes I will be harsh. A super hero movie should also never focus on romance as it's main plot, that right there is a massive recipe for disaster.

I still disagree on both counts. If it was "very poorly done" and a "recipe for disaster" then how come that there are people who liked it, including myself? What I dislike of trying to present your own subjective opinions as objective is that it carries unpleasant implications. If you indeed believe it is as you say, what does that say about people who disagree with you? Or if my input is that I believe it was a very well done story and that I think superhero movies lend themselves perfectly for having love stories as their main plot, how do we determine whether it is me or you who is right?

How so? Both are criticized heavily, just like romance heavy plots in Super hero stories, along with Amazing Spider Man 2, that does not mean you can't enjoy it, but if something is criticized heavily then there might be a reason why. This should however not stop you from enjoying it however saying things like "people don't get it" is false as alot of people do get it, they simply don't like that the focus was on romance.

There's no accounting for taste. If a story or plot is good or bad is subjective. Trying to figure out who's right is a fools errand

No, what I am saying is there might be a reason why it's criticized, that does not mean you can't enjoy the product or that your taste sucks.
