So I forget where but I remember reading a Dev saying that in DA2 you and your party were outcasts.  But in DAI you are the leader of this powerful organization and your party members are the best of the best.  Like Cassandra being the best Seeker and Vivienne being the Head Enchanter.

So my question is how dose Varric come to be a companion?  As much as I love him and I will say he is no slouch in and out of battle I still don't see him as a "best of the best"  type.  Just wondering how he will fit into the narrative.

Please speculate away!

Overdose.

I think he mainly just likes the chance for adventure, plus for some unknown reason he wantsto travel along with Cassandra.

Oh there is certainly something he is the best of the best at, which could be considered useful. But some think of him as the Merchant Guild leader and therefore he's one that fits in the group.

Varric is the best at being awesome. On a more realistic note, Varric (despite his demeanour) is an outright brilliant trader who maintained a merchant empire in Kirkwall, engineered comfortable lives for all of his non-Hawke/Aveline friends through his extensive underworld ties, and otherwise navigated surface dwarven politics enough to keep his life cozy.

I don't think that every single companion has to fit into this "best of the best" role.  They could have been speaking in general and not literally.  I think that they are going to write in some reason why Varric is still traveling with Cassandra after his interrogation, but I'm not sure if we have enough evidence to speculate on what that reason is at this point.

To be honest, I see Varric's inclusion as more of a continuity feature.  They have always carried a companion over from one game to the next (Oghren, Anders, and now Varric) and I think it's to bring a popular character through as a nod to the fans.  That's really how I see Varric.

Cassandra thinks people will listen to the champion.  Varric is very close to the champion.  She may think Varric can find the champion for her.

Precisely. Also we know that the Wardens discovered something pretty big when they re-traced Hawke's expedition. (Nathaniel Howe goes all "It's classified" when Hawke asks him). Varric was a part of that expedition so he might be one of the leads the Inquisition has. That in addition to the facts that he is awesome with a crossbow, one of the Champion's closest friends, has valuable info on the Lyrium idol (having discovered it though that might be related to the whole Warden discovery) etc. make him probably vital to the Inquisition.

IMO, he is awesome and the best character to carry over fron DA2 to DA I

A few possible reasons:

His connection to the Dwarven Merchant's Guild

His knowledge of events

His knowledge of Red Lyrium

etc.

I could see him narrating a la Duncan in Origins and...whoever that was in Awakening.

Ah, that really depends on the quality of his resumé. The Inquisition is a notorious stickler for paperwork!

Varric knows what happened in Kirkwall, he was there, enough to be able to tell Hawke's story. If it's true that Hawke and the Warden will make an appearance in Inquisition, Varric will be there to at least approach Hawke when he/she comes into the picture.

When you consider that Kirkwall is basically a shell of its former glory, why would Varric want to stay there? He might not love being outside the city, but I'm sure he has some sort of business beyond Kirkwall. Maybe he's decided to move to Orlais, or to try to follow after Hawke, and events cause things to happen differently for him.

Pretty much this. With all the different directions you can take the Inquisition, I think the companions are going to advocate their specialty/make sure things run smoothly when they're not with the Inquisitor. There are far worse people you could have on your side helping you manage mercantile stuff.

He did seem sympathetic towards Cassandra's cause of bringing back peace, so maybe he decided to work with her.

How does correct spelling fit into the English language? :P
But really, I think Varric will claim that he's there to get another story. Why he's really there, I have no idea. Someone needs to be funny and I don't exactly think Cass will be the humorous character.

I suspect his main role will be exposition on DA2(and the background to the mage/templar war) for those who didn't play the game.

Also, for the connections between DA2 and the current plot, if there are any, so that someone in the party can get them along with us.

I think he wants to find his old friend Hawke and make sure that his friends aren't on the wrong side.

He's part of the Dwarven Merchant Guild, and he might have influence outside Kirkwall.
