He has a huge connection because of Cassandra and Hawke. Hawke was pivotal (however you want to interpret that) in the events of DA2, and Varric, being the storyteller, is probably the one with the most inside info regarding Hawke. That alone makes him useful, plus add to the fact that he comes from a noble family (Tethras house) that has influences on the surface and below (dwarven connection) and has many connections (DA2 he was able to keep Anders in hiding, Merrill safe, and so forth).
So how dose Varric fit itno the party?

Pretty much this. With all the different directions you can take the Inquisition, I think the companions are going to advocate their specialty/make sure things run smoothly when they're not with the Inquisitor. There are far worse people you could have on your side helping you manage mercantile stuff.
Plus Varric is the best smooth-talker ever. The Inquisition can't starve to death. It needs support, because wars are won on things like a "full stomach". Having someone that's quite brilliant at business keep your armories and foodstores fully stocked is key.

He's got connections with various organizations and people that are both legal and illegal , he's skilled at bluffing, intimidation, and diplomacy, and he's good in a fight. With all these talents he'll probably be the most versatile companion we have.

He is an excellent marksman, and the only owner and user of an automatic ranged weapon in the whole continent. He is very knowledgeable on Carta, trade, guilds, and crime in general.
I would say Varric would be a must for any organization that wishes to establish dominance over certain, shady ways of income, as well as an incredibly valuable advisor for trade and the underground Thedas.

Plus, he has tie to one of the enemies, and could be feeling some guilt over the events in DA2. He might very well consider the expedition that he ensured happen to be the ultimate cause of what happened in Kirkwall, never mind the Red Templars. With that motive, and the skills we know he has, I could see how he would be very valuable to the Inquisition.

I think people blew the "leaders" and "best of the best" comments a bit out of proportion. I've seen this same debate over half the confirmed/possible companions now. I don't think they meant everyone in your party would be clearly defined as the leader of a faction, or at least their crown jewel. I think they were just trying to illustrated that there's a shift in tone from DA2, where you were a nobody that worked their way up to only being semi-respected in one small area, to a character that's building an international organization who starts out with a high level of respect and builds on it from there. I think they were just trying to demonstrate how the Inquisitor was working on a larger scale than Hawke.
As for why he's there, I think it could have something to do with Yavana and the dragon plot from the comics, honestly. Cassandra could tell us about the DA2 plot, but only Varric would know about the plot from the comics. Since Morrigan is there, it could be connected.

Varric is the best of the best at convincing people of things so he convinces the Inquisitor he is the best of the best and gets recruited.

Varric seemed to have a lot of influence in Kirkwall. He's got money, connections, a spy network and he's an important figure in the Dwarven Merchants Guild. It doesn't seem implausible that he could be considered an important asset to the Inquisition.
