Question about Squad mates

I disagree. I want active power use off so the squad doesn't just willy nilly use a power on some target I don't care about. If I want them to engage a specific target, most likely I want them to use a power against it as well. I don't recall ever reading about a bonus to squad weapon damage in ME2 if you order the squad to attack a specific target. I know it exists in ME3, which is why very rarely I might use the Z key.
It also helps simplify your quick slot assignments since you don't necessarily even have to bind a squadmate's power to one of them unless you know there might be a conflict over which power they might use.

Hmm… I think you misunderstood my post. Like you (and most other Insanity players), I always set the auto power use setting to "off" so that I maintain control over squad mate powers. I would prefer that the move/attack command RESPECT this setting, such that whenever a squad mate is directed to attack a particular target, they only use their weapons. If I want them to attack with a power *also*, I can always do that using the hot key assigned to that specific power (for which I already have muscle memory), or failing that, the HUD menu.
Conversely, if for some reason I wanted auto power use "on", I'd probably also want the move/attack command to respect this setting (and thus also involve auto power use).

I can't think of a situation in which I would want the AI to decide *on its own* whether or not to use a power (or which power) when ordering an attack. 9/10 times the AI will just blow its wad on the target immediately with the highest damage power, leaving your squad mate on cool down. Usually I order an attack because I want the squad to distract or weapon-strip a particular enemy while I am dealing with something else (often using power combos involving the squad mates' powers), or concentrate fire on a particular unit that I am already using their powers on anyway.
Although I occasionally run out of quick slots, I don't mind using the HUD for the least used power. Using the move/attack key as a pseudo quick slot does not sound like a very universal solution (since it may be hard to predict exactly what the AI will do in a given situation).

Maybe they don't, I'm not sure... I thought it was in all games. But it doesn't really matter to me, my playstyle is to either eliminate enemies one by one by focusing fire on a single target or direct my squadmates to hit one target and direct Shepard's fire to a different target (essentially taking out enemies two by two). Depends a bit on class and powers available.

The power they use is entirely predictable, especially if they only have one leveled. They do not of course actually use a power if it is "inapproprate" though. So if the target is shielded, you can command Mordin on them and he will not use a power because none of them are "appropriate" against shields.
Whether or not you even have to hotkey a power depends on the specific squadmate, their build, and if you plan to use their power on an inappropriate defense layer. Garrus is probably the best example of a squad member you never really need to spend a quckslot on since his powers are always predictable and there is little utility using them inappropriately.
Thane and Miranda it is a bit debatable and depends on their build. For Miranda there is little point until she is loyal, or you are fighting Geth. Even so I think the game is using logic to determine Throw / Slam vs Warp on lifted targets, but I can't look at the code to figure it out.

The only squadmate I needed to actually respec because she did not understand what to use, was Liara in ME3. She keeps spamming that Singularity of hers even if she has only one point in it. I end up removing it from her skills entirely. Other squadmates are quite good with their AI, use what is needed when it's needed ![]()

I have no idea what Liara's logic is. I tend to use her as a Singularity spammer, but if you have a point in Stasis she likes to use that on protected targets. What I usually do is only spec her Singularity for the parking lot fight, then get 1 pt Stasis for Vasir.
I agree though, she tends to be one of the ones you almost always need to hotkey powers.

I just reset her powers in ME3 and remove points from Singularity. I thought her logic was that Warp is only used on armored targets. Or maybe she just loves Singularity lol ![]()
