So Im gonna go ahead and say it, im not very impressed with these new companions. I mean, what we have seen of them is mostly screenshots(aside from varric and Cassandra) but still they're not super appealing to me. And I really am trying to hold my judgments until I know them better.... but I just cant see me liking them,  at this point. So heres a little list of them and why I don't like them.

Varric: He is  probably the one im most excited for(which shouldn't say much, since we already had him) and he wasn't at all my favorite in DA2, he was more towards the middle of my list. But from what ive seen im going to like him a lot more. Btw he looks ****** ba in that armor just saying...

Cassandra: Im also excited for her, I liked her a lot in DA2 and she seems quite interesting. But as far as her for a romance option... meh... im just really not that interested in romancing her.

Vivienne: Does not interest me much if at all. I mean the one line we heard her say was something like she wasn't out of her element, which to me is kind of cocky and dumb. Also bald? really? just.. really?

Bald elf mage: is his name Solas or dorian? Either way hes not my type. firstly the pants... your not at your grandparents house anymore you can take your long johns off and put big boy pants on... Secondly hes bald and not in a Walter white way... more of a slippery worm way.

Iron Bull: was he actually confirmed? or is he just popping up in every other concept or screenshot? This guy just doesn't really interest me, overall. I guess my main thought is that he'll be like Sten, always doubting and questioning me.... its rather annoying. And as much as I like the qunari and stens wisdom from it... He really annoyed me and I feel like this guy will be the same way. Also im just throwing this in here in case a dev bothers to read this, I would really like the option to give companions who question my choices a nice icy glare.

Cullen: I've wanted to kill this guy for the past 2 games... so ya...  the most im hoping for out of this is the possibility to murder knife him. Also im kind of really disappointed that he is the "Templar perspective" and not Evangeline.

Bearded grey warden: Assuming he is in the game of course. He doesn't seem very interesting. Grey wardens kind of have a tendency to be Dbags(not that I don't like the grey wardens) and im not into the whole beard thing. I gotta say he kind of looks like a dbag... but then again I said the same thing about Joel in The Last of Us and he's now one of my favorite characters of all time... we'll see.

Dramatic Hands Mustache Guy: Again assuming he is actually in the game. This guy just straight up looks like a tool to me...

Blonde Elf Girl: She looks like she could have potential, though I don't really like her in that bar concept. And right now she's kind of my last hope for this set of companions.

Alright so if you made it here you can go ahead and scoff and leave or tell your thoughts. Im really wondering if other people are having the same worries as me or if im just going completely crazy.

Leaping to conclusions is one of my favorite things to do too!
Seriously, I understand you forming an opinion on the characters you've actually interacted with. But don't knock it til you've tried it. Its a bit baseless just forming an opinion on concept art and a single line someone spoke.

For what it's worth, I was markedly unimpressed by DA2's roster and then loved them, so I'm prepared to be pleasantly surprised.

Thus far, the roster for Inquisition has hit a few sweet spots for me... I wanted Cassandra, a mage with political investment in the Circle, and a Tal Vashoth. Not thrilled about Varric, because this makes two games in a row where he is a constant fixture in my party (because one does not simply bench Varric)
Solas definitely has potential... I'm a fan of theories painting him as a dreamer from Arlathan. Sera... eh. She'll have to work hard to get on my good side.

I can't say if I like character or not before getting more information about them so I don't think anything about Iron Bull, Sera, Solas, Grey warden and other possible companions. I'm pretty much unintrested so far about them.

Cassandra: She is badass woman and I like her style and haircut. So I'm pretty eager to see her.

Vivienne: I like her styling but in the other hand I think I'll have personality clash with her. I hope she doesn't talk too much about fashion and act sassy, I know some like those aspect of her but I just don't ^^; I just have feeling that I won't like her but I hope I'll get suprised positively.

Varric: He was funny and nice in DA2. Not my fav character but still happy to see him. Party banter will be funnier him around.

Cullen (possible companion): One of my fav characters in DA universe so I'm most pumped up to see him.

I'M SUPER EXCITED FOR THE CHARACTERS!

Varric - Damn. Keep up the good work!

Cassandra - YAY!

Vivienne - Fashionistic Maleficent is a welcome, as always.

Solas - Hey, being bald =/= lame.

Iron Bull - Badass. Slash them all.

Sera - No dirty jokes, lady.

DHMG - A Tevinter magister? Interesting.

Cullen - You should change your view in DA:I.

Bearded Grey Warden - A nice addition! Let this be possible!

Well, we don't know much about them (and I don't intend to read too much before the release), but so far I see a lot of potential.

I'm curious about Varric, what made he decide to join the Inquisition and how he changed since DA2. Cassandra will probably be in my party, if I can spec her to be a DPS warrior, instead of a tank.

Iron Bull and Sera seems fun, Solas and Vivienne interesting and I don't know anything about the Grey Warden, but he looks cool.

I hope that at least another female party member will be revealed and I really really hope that Cullen won't be a possible companion. I'd like to see someone new and we already have both Varric and Cassandra from a previous game.

I felt a lot like you did at first, OP, but actually for me people's enthusiasm about these characters on this forum has been kind of contagious, particularly when fanart starts getting involved. For instance I hated everything I was seeing in regard to Solas, and then I visited the Solas thread and was converted in a couple short days.  ^_^

I am not all that excited about Varric though, and I'm not sure I ever will be. I just don't understand the decision to keep the same companion in two consecutive games. Why not make him an NPC/advisor type of character? However, I might change my tune once the game starts. I did like DA2 a lot, and I loved my Hawke, so Varric might serve as a nice blast from the past type of reminder of those times.

Edit: Problem is we've been staring at this limited supply of concept art for ages now. We've got nothing else to go on. Maybe once we hear some of these characters (other than Varric and Cass) speak, see them in a trailer doing... something, things will get more exciting.

Cassandra:

I doubt I'll use her much. I feel like we'll definitely have a personality clash, since she seems like the obvious Chantry champion.

Varric:

In DA2 he ended up a staple in my party, but I'm not that excited to see him back. I just wonder what he could have to contribute. Maybe something to do with the comics featuring Yavana and the dragon plot? Morrigan and Yavana were both witches of the wilds and Morrigan is back, so maybe it ties up together. He might end up seeing a lot of party use again, just because I enjoy his banter.

Vivienne:

She seems annoying, to me, I'll be honest. I can appreciate the "in it for yourself" attitude, but I don't agree with her position, so I don't see my PC getting along with her well. She's also just a circle mage, so I don't see her having as interesting of outlook as the other likely mages. She probably wont get much use at all.

Solas:

I'm interested to see what he's like. It seems like he could contribute a lot of knowledge on the fade and expanding the world lore, so he may see a lot of use.

Iron Bull:

Supposedly he has a good sense of humor, which I like in a character. I'm interested in talking to him and getting his views from a Tal-Vashoth standpoint, but I'm not sure if I'll end up using him much. Seems like he'll fill the same "bro" slot as Varric, so I might end up usually just sticking with Varric.

Sera:

She seems obnoxious, to me. I see her as having a similar personality to Isabela, but more hyper and obnoxious, less sensual. I'm not that interested in her character right now. I'll have to see if she surprises me.

Warden (possible companion):

I'm really interested on hearing about the wardens from someone that actually has inside knowledge. All the wardens we've met were new, low rank, or didn't talk much. He's basically like Iron Bull, though. I'm excited about exploring his dialog trees, but not convinced he'll be in my party much.

DHMG/Dorian (possible companion):

Assuming this guy is Dorian, the Tevinter magister, I'm quite interested in his viewpoints. He's also the companion I most hope is a love interest. I could see him ending up getting a lot of use in my party.

Cole (possible companion):

I love his concept and I'd really like to hear more from the perspective of a spirit. We've only had one spirit companion before, for a very short time. I really hope he's in and I could see myself using him a lot.

Cullen (possible companion):

I doubt I'd use him much. I've starkly disagreed with his view in the past games and I doubt he'd have much new information to contribute. He seems even less likely to see party time than Cassandra and I see them as being pretty similar.

I choose to keep myself from getting excited over anything, as information that is given out about any game before its release is there to make you excited and buy the game. Advertisement tactics that work really well. So this drip of companions and speculation is actually a very brilliant way of keeping the game in the gamers eye, reminding them of it's existence and to sell.

So my opinion on the companions is very... sparse at the moment. The only thing I have been really thinking about with them is how vastly different they will act in battle since I don't want to just assume how they would act. But I suppose I can muster up some personal thoughts on them just from the small impressions we have of them, but set in stone opinion of them will wait on actually getting my hands on the game;

Varric: Well, it's Varric. Sure he was swell in the other games and the comic, but he wasn't my favorite. He was a great companion then, and I'm sure he'll be nice come DAI as well, it'll be nice to see if he will keep up that constant sort of snark he does or will finally develop beyond that. His writing was really well done, but I do get bored of the forever sarcasm banter and rather something a touch more meaty, which I'm sure he will provide. He's not winning me over, I had him as a companion before and would rather something fresh, but I can understand his purpose and don't condone his existance at all in the party. I just don't think I'd use him.

Cassandra: I know squat on her, and I never saw her cartoon/animation that focused around her history. From what I have seen of her from the small bit of DA2 and some silly side things I've seen Gaider post about with her, she's okay. I suppose. She's reading as a stick in the mud for me, uptight and attempting to be super srs mode all the time. I have a note somewhere that says if I do plan on putting her on a team to put her on one that has the most silly. Since the silly and the uptight characters have fun banter together generally.

Iron Bull: Hrm, it's nice to have a qunari buddy. He looks fun, when I have my female qunari I'm curious to see how he acts then compared to my first character. But since there's only art of him and his name, I've got really nothing on him. Fella needs a shirt though... then again I don't think all the shirts in the world can bind them muscles.

Sera: Yeah she's my least interested character. A bratty elf that has no culture sounds nothing interesting to me. She's very light on the info, but her art and description I saw one time is like... probably going to have her benched the whole time. I also really don't like her design I keep seeing of her. Shallow shallow reasons but when I see stuff on her I just find myself eye rolling.

Vivienne: I... don't... know how to think of her. She sounds fun and is interesting, since she has much more infomation about her. We've seen more of her and plenty of artwork to history of her, so she has that advantage. But she hasn't really clicked for me, and I wish she did. Maybe she will when I see her in action, as these are all shallow first impressions based on those limited viewings.

Solas: He looks super dorky. I adore his design. He has high potential of being interesting to me because of the whole fade situation and I have been way interested to see more of him. I have been really interested in the situation of the fade and the lore behind that so maybe he'll be the one with the most banter on it (and I am extremely hoping that if Cole is on the spot of companions, those two will just have the most interesting conversations about the fade and the spirits/demons. Huh, I think my peeked interest on him is based around his possible interactions with Cole)

Now the rumored possibles;

Warden: He looks like a wonderful big bear. If his concepts are anything to go by, he looks like an interesting one with the joyfulness, then the somber. My coin is on him being a father type character, possibly near his retirement as a warden? Them final years, maybe a touch of the Duncan in him.

DHMG/Dorian: He looks like he could be fun. Being an outcast in a land of corruption, when normally it's corruption in the DA world that is the quick to outcast, he has that possibility of bringing in a different insight on mages even while being one. Also, stash. This is such a dorky group of companions.

Cullen: I really really hope he's NPC LI. Because I would find him as that 9th companion very sour in my mouth because of a number of reasons. I don't think he could bring anything new in a fight or lore stuff since we've seen what he has been up to. I mean, he's a nice character, but there's no real hook to him, just that he's an ex templar and on your side now after all these games he's been oposite of you. Except not really, since to he Inquisitor he'd be just on your side. Er, you know what I mean. We have enough meatie shields, and if he takes the place of Warden I'ma be real sad... or even more so if he takes the place of....

Cole: Oh my Maker please. Please please please have him be apart of our companion roster. He was grossly interesting in Asunder while setting him up perfectly for a new person. He's such a massive question mark to his existence, a physical spirit thing where nothing has been figured out of him (which you can't take what the characters in Asunder said about him for face value, because they have no idea what he is either and just kept assuming things that the reader would know as complete BS) then he's got a really interesting way of fighting with the whole making people not see him but can be clearly hurt. A sort of 'arcane thief' as someone mentioned before somewhere here. His memories are bonk'd and probably after Asunder he's struggling with filtering out the feels.  He is just, guh I think my favorite character in all of DA lore at the moment, he is tied into the idea of a grey demon/spirit. He has massive potential all around to be a great companion, and would be a horrible waste to leave him in the book, or as a minor npc. I bet though, if he is announced, he'll be the last ish one, and will have this really cute way of announcing him along the lines of "Oh he's been here the whole time, what you didn't see him in every single screen shot? See that shadow right there? Yup that's been him in all the shots. He was even on top of the dragon in this screenshot!" But I can only hope.

I think that's all of them. As for say like, Lilianna and the Scribe girl, Liliana I'm getting tired of seeing everywhere. Yes she's a badass bard blahblehblugh wonderful. She's only been in nearly every single book, her own DLC, and the for front of a lot of stuff. I get it, she's cool. Something new please. Scribe can be interesting. I suppose. I mean if she's an npc advisor of trade, welp I'll be all over her just to have a new character to learn about rather then Cullen or Lilianna.

I have high hopes for Inquisition's companions, the previous followers in the past games didn't let me down, so I see no reason for these to. Even my least favourite companions (Oghren, Sten and Sebastian) were still interesting characters, and I appreciated their involvement. The best thing about the followers, in my opinion, is there interaction and involvement with each other. So while I didn't particularly like Sebastian, his conversations with Varric, Merrill and Isabela were always entertaining.

I'm most looking forward to Vivienne, Sera, Dorian and Cassandra. The other 5 have a lot of potential as well, I'm looking forward to any and all information we can get on them.

Perhaps you'll warm to them in time  :)

I agree on so many things you wrote! Especially on Beardy McWarden and Leliana (too tired of her. I'm team Morrigan.) Agree on nearly every companion.

I am not very interested in Solas though, since I got the impression of a nerdy boring mage, compared to all the other mages we had before. Especially Anders and Morrigan. I imagine him having a monotone manner of speech, no sense of humour and tedious party banter. I hope I'm so wrong!!

So here is my opinion on the possible companions, the number of stars (1 to 5) means how much interested I'm in them.

Beardy: *****

Cullen: **

Varric: ****

Sera: **

I'm afraid I am a member of the ABC club (Anyone but Cole). I truly disliked him in the book. My friends have assured me that he will grow on me. To them I replied that is why most dermatologists are also surgeons.

I love this system.  It's much quicker than writing out what I like and dislike about each (although, I admit, I'm fairly biased towards quantitative data....)

I am looking forward to it all really, story, companions, worlds, fighting...
One thing I've learned is that, what makes the character likeable to me is the connection/relationship with another character.
My favorite tv series are heavy on characters, like Carnivale. Sometimes a character alone isn't as interesting or fun as in combination with another. Morrigan and Alistair in a sense become one character, wouldn't be the same without either of them.

I am determined to like one which I don't even know will be in the game (Dorian,) but other than that I'll have to wait until seeing them playing it out.

I am extremely interested in Iron Bull, Beard Warden, and Cassandra. I'm on the fence with Sera; I think she could end up being one of my favorites and also end up a bench warmer, depending on how heavy handed they are with her humor. I'm also rather intrigued by DHMG/Dorian; at the very least, I'm interested in learning more about him.

I'm very "meh" about Solas. I see some potential there, but it's a potential that could go very wrong. But for the most part he does nothing for me.

Varric, I love him as a character and am glad to see him again, but I'd rather he not be a companion. I have this thing where I want the Warden's team to be the Warden's team, Hawke's team to be Hawke's team, and the Inquistor's team to be the Inquistor's team, with as little overlap as possible. I hope Varric doesn't fill the same best friend/sidekick niche that he did in DA2.

Vivienne is the only companion thus far that I'm overtly negative about. Based solely on what we know about her thus far, I do believe I will actively dislike her. I'm willing to admit that I could be wrong and when the game comes out I'll be surprised and I'll love her, but I doubt it, and without speculation, can say that right now I will be interacting with her as little as possible.

I'm also rather against Cole as a companion. He's an intriguing character that I wouldn't mind seeing in the game, but I don't think he'll work as a companion.

I'm pretty sure these opinions of yours will not hold when you actually interact with them. I don';t know how you developed such negative strongly held beliefs on companions that all you know about them is how they look.

Varric: Nothings ever dull with Varric around. He makes the atmosphere so bright and humorous for me and i alsways loved Varric. I';m excited to have him back!

Cassandra:I think she's going to be an interesting character and i';m excited for her. I';m curious about what happens between her and the Seekers. I think our personalities will conflict since i'm a mage and she was a Seeker, but I think she will change throughout the game.

Vivienne: I think her personality is going to be very interesting based on the Follower Friday thing, but i'm disappointed that is is pro-circle so I';ll probably conflict with her a lot. I hope she changes her stance throughout the game.

The Iron Bull: I'm most excited for him. He looks absolutely awesome. He';s a huge muscular qunari with bull like horns and a missing eye with a scar who fears nothing but his past and is the leader of a Tal-Vashoth Mercenary band. I really like his armor type, I think that';s going to be really cool. I do think he';s probably going to be a tough guy, but will occassionally joke and hates the Qun and tries to be opposite of the way someone of the Qun acts. I think he will be nothing like Sten.

SolasI'm excited about him because he';s supposed to be a mage who is very much for rebelling against the templars and I think he and my character will get along very well and I may romance him.

Sera: I really have no idea how to feel about her. A Elf Rogue companion sounds cool though.

Rumored Companions:

The Warden: He looks really cool. Him being a warden is cool and I just have a good feeling about him.

Cullen: I hated his guts in the first 2 games, but if he is part of the inquisition then he must have left the Templars which means what happened in DA:2 made him lose faith in the Templar methods and I think that will make him a very interesting character. This could also mean his view on mages changed atleast slightly. Either way I think I will be able to change his view further.

Mustache Mage Guy: I think it will be very interesting to have a tevinter mage companion.

My theory is that The Warden will be the other warrior companion and Cullen will be part of the Inquisition, but not a companion but i';m not totally sure.

EDIT: I decided to do the star system as well.

My only complaint is that the team seems a bit too uneven in terms of gender and race... Way too many humans and men. >.< I'm hoping there's a dwarf girl no one predicted and/or a female qunari... I am quite excited about most of the new characters though (not crazy about their selection of old characters tbh), especially Sera, Grey Warden and Solas.

They can't be as  bad as DA:2 companions...

I'll let you know what I think of the companions after I have beaten the game the first time.

I agree with your general sentiments Op. The exceptions for myself are Tethras and Mustache Mage.

The rest I don't like from their descriptions or their looks.

Bioware appears to be making things easy for me if it comes down to betraying allies to get ahead.

I will wait and see but I shan't hold my breath.

I'm afraid I am a member of the ABC club (Anyone but Cole). I truly disliked him in the book. My friends have assured me that he will grow on me. To them I replied that is why most dermatologists are also surgeons.

Well I like to think of it this way, the Cole we're may get in the game is going to be vastly different to the one that we got in the book. I notice that people tend to forget that hey, at the end of the book he's way more confident and with him knowing (sort of) what he is and that isn't a pitiful mage who is 'cursed'. I highly doubt he would act the same in the books because of the revilation at the end, the Cole in the books went through a mini arc of realizing his memories are a complete lie of who he is. And if rumors be true on things, he's not going to care about all that and wants to move on and not be 'helpless' pulled between helping people or stabby to the face.

We actually have no idea how a game Cole would be, because his set up of being the boy Cole is no more unless he gets overwhelmed by the previous memories getting confused to those memories, and how he himself should feel. That and I'm sure Bioware wouldn't make the book required to know how Cole is, and he's that spirit in the end who is different to the one experienced in the book.

I think the Cole we get in the game would have to be very different from the one we got in the books, even at the end of the book.

And that's part of why I don't want him as a companion. There's a point where you have to change so much about the character to make them work that they're not even the same character anymore. While that may be subjective, I feel that the changes they'd have to make to Cole cross that threshold.

Not sure why a minor character would gather so much hate. If you're a templar, he's one of the chivalrous templar who doesn't abuse his power and willing to listen to reason seeing as how you can influence his actions in DA2. If you're a mage, he's willing to speak up against Meredith in order to spare the defenseless mages. He's not an extremist in either directions, so I feel like his moderate view is very appreciated.
