take the edi with you. That's what I did. I always pick destroy so the robot will always be fried
Or don't pick Destroy and then EDI can't die.

Why would I not pick destroy? I don't care if the robot is destroyed.
Ah, but you see, Garrus is awesome. Practically un-hateable.
I'm negatively ambivalent to Garrus. You were saying?

"Practically"
This thread needs cuteness:

I think it was Gaider who said that the most popular characters tend to be the ones that are (1) funny, and (2) never oppose the player's will. Garrus seems to fall squarely within that category. While I don't dislike Garrus or anything, I'm not convinced that traits (1) and (2) automatically make for great characters.
EDIT: Removed some smileys.

The spawn of smurfette and an octopus. Either way, burn it with nuclear fire.

Ditto. I have a very dry, dark, and gallows sense of humor. I prefer the sharp rapier wit to comedy. Garrus' humor isn't really all that funny to me most of the time.
And I like a squadmate to have a bit of their own personality as well. I don't want them to agree with me because it's me. I want them to agree because they legitimately and independently hold the same opinion.
I'm not a fan of Garrus. The worst thing I heard in London is "There's no Shepard without VaKarian". After hearing that, I never said goodbye to him again if he's alive in my playthrough. He was ok in ME2, but in ME3 he turned into a wet noodle.

Agreed. I'd go even further and say that there should have been more characters who outright disagreed or defied Shepard's will. Heck, even outright betrayal shouldn't have been out of the question, especially given extent to which the whole ideas of trust and loyalty were at the forefront of ME2 in particular.

Thankfully, that's what headcanon and fanfiction is for. That's how Ashley meets her demise in it.

I think Mass Effect would have benefited from some kind of approval system. Reputation was fine, but I'd like the characters to express their opinions/disapproval to certain choices and it having a bigger impact on how they address you.
I've been playing KotOR 2, with the RCM, and the influence system there is really good. May be better suited for Star Wars than ME, but it's good.
Your followers react to what you do, and how you treat them. Liara would not be saving Shepard's body with many people on this forum.

I would suggest that if you really feel that Synthetics aren't alive and/or 'hate' them, it's probably time to give up on the series and likely Science Fiction entirely. Or learn to live with it. Or spend a few minutes to realize how silly and childish such a viewpoint is and how you really only 'believe' such a thing because it's the Renegade option.
It's obviously not a viewpoint that's going to be validated. Nor should it be.
I think the story is a little too complex for this sort of thing. But having said that, if any character could be described as a deuteragonist I think that honor would belong to TIM because the dude is behind like 98.3% of all events that happen in the MEU.

Oh, look, the EDI white knight, how heroic...
I've never heard of a "deuteragonist" before, but english isn't my first language.
Like the second-main character? Not the protagonist, but second to the protagonist.

The original plan might have been to have the VS be the deuteragonist, but given their (at best) lukewarm reception in ME1, those plans didn't pan out.
Not sure why they picked Liara though (beyond being a writer's pet, I guess), considering how many contrivances and hoops the plot has to keep jumping through to justify her large role in every game.

How ridiculous.
First of all, has it ever crossed your mind that the situation on Virmire was an obstacle to making the VS have a large role?
Secondly, you're just making up garbage. Never have I seen evidence that Ashley was received poorly. Quite the opposite. Kaidan was somewhat looked upon as a whiner, but overall he was nowhere near hated.
Thirdly, these so-called 'contrivances and hoops' are just delusionary.

I would think that being able to kill the VS in the midway point of ME3 would be a bigger obstacle, because you're guaranteed to have one live to see the end of ME1, and the role is interchangeable at that point.
How ridiculous.

Oh, the delicious irony....
